After an enjoyable counting of bald eagles at Onondaga Lake this morning I
drove across to Montezuma Wildlife Refuge. On Rt. 31 mucklands there were large
numbers of snow geese on the south side of the road as well as many more
landing further north but out of sight range. At Carncross Rd.
I, too, checked a few places for geese this evening. W. Loop Road,
north of Route 31 and west of Port Byron, had hundreds or more Canada
Geese and ducks, easily visible from the overlook, but good light
would be in the morning, as you are looking west.
Morgan Road was frozen--no birds, but
Someone posted a spotting scope on here in the last week...wondering if it
is still available?
The thousands of geese today, and 4 sandhill cranes at Montezuma visitor
center were fantastic! But sure made me wish for a scope!
Great day out there!

Today (Wednesday), after spending the morning on our south facing deck watching
loads of Canada and snow geese fly over, Ton and I drove around Cayuga lake.
On the northwest side, at the south end of the ice (which is south of Cayuga
Lake State Park, where Lake Rd. rejoins 89) we found two
7 Sandhills in front of visitors center at MNWR just now.

I've been hearing lots of Canada geese at night here, over Sheffield Road. As
late as 11 pm.
This morning, I saw a large V of Canada geese, then one of Canada geese with 4
white and I assume snow geese leading it, then a large sloppy V (I notice the
snow geese have sloppier Vs than Canada
While skiing in the woods of Connecticut Hill WMA yesterday, 3 bands of snow
geese passed overhead, beautiful against the blue sky.

>From upper lisle whitney point ny I have had flock after flock of snow
geese today heading northwest toward the finger lakes. Also quite a bit of
Canadas too. I suspect the massive gatherings of snows will be building
building big-time next couple days! What a great day!

Captain Woody McKenzie of the M/V Teal reported seeing an Osprey on March 8
flying over Ithaca's Dog Park. Woody, my colleague at Discover Cayuga Lake,
keeps a log of Osprey sightings around Cayuga Lake during the season.
Please keep an eye out near the Allen Treman Marine Park Osprey platform
A Great Blue Heron is walking around the bank of our still frozen pond here
outside of Mecklenberg this morning. It looks a bit strange to me to see one on
the snow.

For the last two mornings I've had 15 Red-winged Blackbirds and a Song
Sparrow picking up seeds under my feeders. This morning a Grackle has
joined them.
Yesterday I enjoyed the sights and sounds of hundreds of Canada Geese
heading north, with a few Snows here and there.
Yippee!!

Folks,
Now that you know spring actually is coming, remember, Spring
Ornithology starts March 30! Still lots of space. Here's my blurb
(please share with friends or family ANYWHERE).
