[cayugabirds-l] Sapsucker/Bomax

2010-01-23 Thread Ryan Douglas
Wilson North at Sapsucker Woods had the usual suspectsCEDAR WAXWINGS,
AMERICAN TREE/WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS, BLUE JAYS imitating the
Red-shouldered Hawk, AMERICAN ROBINS, DARK-EYED JUNCOS, etc. The best bird
for me was my second GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL (and first since November 2007)
at Sapsucker Woods flying over the main pond.

A NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was hanging out on Triphammer Rd. just south of
Cherry Rd. and another was in the field on Bomax Drive. Other birds on Bomax
were AMERICAN TREE SPARROW, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, HOUSE FINCH, DARK-EYED
JUNCO and BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE. I also found a good smattering of tracks
in the snow that may correspond to the pack of coyotes I heard
howling/yipping from that area last night.

A drive behind the Ithaca Airport yielded two RED-TAILED HAWKS and one hawk
that disappeared in the glare of the sun before being identified. It was not
relocated.

Good birding,
Ryan

[cayugabirds-l] Eared Grebe

2010-01-23 Thread bob mcguire
Just returned from the CBC field trip - up the lake as far as Union
Springs. I'll try and do a full report later but want to note here
that an EARED GREBE was present, not far off the Wells College
boathouse, at around 11. There were at least 7 Horned Grebes, but all
of them quite distant.

[cayugabirds-l] Red-shouldered,Rough-legged, Sharpie, GHOwl, Buntings

2010-01-23 Thread cfschmitt
A couple stolen hours away from the office yielded:
Great-Horned Owl in her Stewart Park nest hole,
Red-shouldered Hawk west of Kip's Barn, screaming from a perch on a utility
pole,
Rough-legged Hawk and Snow Buntings on Mt. Pleasant,
and then a Sharpie posed in a branch over the road, coming back down off
the "mountain."
And what a nice effect of heavy rime on tree branches and bushes on top
of Mt. P.

[cayugabirds-l] Wednesday Aurora Eared Grebe, yes

2010-01-23 Thread James G. Kohlenberg
Sorry for the late post, my email was getting updated. The Eared Grebe was way
off the Aurora Boathouse on Wednesday of this week. It was feeding and then was
able to totally disappear. I don't know how it does it. I didn't see any
Horned Grebes.
I spent the darkening hour on Rafferty Rd. , but didn't see any Short-eared
Owls only one light Rough-legged Hawk.

I took a lunch walk today and did not see Peregrine on the Bradfield Cliff.
It seem to come only to roost. Hopefully it will nest, though I am not
sure how Bradfield building maintenance guys will feel about it! I did see
the excited Red-tailed Hawk circling over its future home.
