[cayugabirds-l] Barred Owls and Spotted Salamanders

2010-04-08 Thread Geo Kloppel
This evening's rain and dropping temperatures seemed like a promising
combination, so just now I stepped out to the vernal pool in my
wooded yard and directed a flashlight beam down through the duckweed
onto the leafy bottom, where I could see that the spotted salamanders
(Ambystoma maculatum) have begun their annual gathering.

Lately, Barred Owls have been hooting down in the gulf, day and night.

[cayugabirds-l] Warbler

2010-04-08 Thread jpackard

I saw my first warbler today. I was working on Lake
Street. My radio was playing Ornette Coleman's
'Endangered Species', and the bird flew over to
check out the music! I didn't have binocluars, but
it looked a lot like a PINE WARBLER- very greenish- yellow.

[cayugabirds-l] turkeys displaying

2010-04-08 Thread Candace Cornell
Eleven tom turkey were displaying for two hens Monday and one hen this
morning alongside the house on the NE corner of Cayuga Heights Rd and
Hanshaw Rd. The toms were displaying alongside the road and making a grand
show of it. The female(s) were in a small ravine behind the house
and appeared to take no notice of the parading for their benefit. After a
while, they all went to the yard next door on Hanshaw and foraged together.

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Eastern Meadowlark

2010-04-08 Thread Marie P Read
An Eastern Meadowlark was singing from the easternmost fields on Mt Pleasant
Road around 4:30 Wednesday afternoon, when I took my walk up the hill. It was
much closer to the road on my way back and I got good looks at it amid the
grass.

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, possible Bell's Vireo rumor

2010-04-08 Thread James G. Kohlenberg
For me the Bell's tip was a great excuse for a little afternoon bird walk.
Ruby-crowned and Golden-crowned Kinglets and my first of the year Yellow-rumped
Warbler, some Sapsuckers, along with the Gnatcatchers made it fun.

Sorry gang but I'm the one that started the Bell's Vireo rumor! After reading
this post and doing a little research I now realize the bird was a/the
BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER. I'm not very familiar with this Gnatcatcher and I've
never seen/heard a Bell's Vireo. I guess not-so-close and no cigar for me...

Carry on.

Attracted by a third-hand report of a possible Bell's Vireo on the Wilson Trail
north
at Sapsucker Woods this afternoon (07 April), I ran into Tom Johnson, Carolyn
Sedgwick, and Jay McGowan. They kindly pointed out a BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER,
a first for the basin for 2010, so far as I know. I don't think anyone
re-found the Vireo,
nor do I know the details on the bird, but it's worth keeping eyes & ears alert
around
Sapsucker Woods for awhile.

Other birds I encountered today included a NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW
on the wires between East Shore Park and NYS 34, probably the same Swallow sp.
I saw
backlit there yesterday as I went past at the speed limit with a fare, and a
PINE WARBLER
singing in pines beside The Parkway in Cayuga Heights near Parkway Place, a
good sighting
from the taxi.

[cayugabirds-l] Yard Birds: Louisiana Waterthrush, Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker, Ruffed Grouse

2010-04-08 Thread shannon
I have had some fun new yard birds this week.

About a half an hour ago, I heard a Louisianna Waterthrush in the creek across
the road.  I believe I heard it a few days ago as well, but was able to hear it
better and confirm it this morning.

There has also been a Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker drumming in the woods in my back
yard for the past 4 days.

I have seen a Ruffed Grouse on two occasions and just heard it again this
morning.

Cheers,

Shannon Haskins
Caroline
