[cayugabirds-l] Thursday birding
The migrants weren't staggering this morning, but I managed to find a few birds I hadn't seen yet. Dryden Lake was quiet, as was George Road (although a GREATER YELLOWLEGS was there yesterday.) Three NORTHERN WATERTHRUSHES were calling along Sapsucker Woods Road, as well as the ever-present WINTER WREN. Stewart Park Swan Pen had a singing YELLOW WARBLER (others had Palm there as well, I believe.) The Farmers Market had a singing WABLING VIREO. The marsh on Rt. 13A south of Ithaca had an EASTERN KINGBIRD foraging in the back. Sandbank Road, Town Line Road, and King Road were pretty quiet (or rather, too windy) except for a LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH singing from deep in the woods at the top of Sandbank. [cayugabirds-l] Hawthorn Orchard, Th 4/29 afternoon
On Thursday afternoon, I had a free hour in the East Hill area. I spent this time on the East Ithaca Recreation Way (Honness Lane to Mitchell Street) and in the Hawthorn Orchard. I found two House Wrens, a Cooper's Hawk terrorizing a flock of starlings, and numerous members of more common species, but nothing new or unusual. I'm posting to report that the hawthorns in the northern half are already copiously blooming. I'd say that about one-third of the blossoms were already wide open, and the other two-thirds are big and white and ready to pop.
