[cayugabirds-l] Hog hole
Hog hole is quite birdy right now with several uncommon or late birds including Black-billed Cuckoo(!), Nelson's Sparrow, Bay-breasted and Orange-crowned Warblers. Most birds along lake edge or in goldenrod patch just south of lake. I also flushed an interesting bird that looked chatlike here but never heard it or saw it well. [cayugabirds-l] Union Springs Snows Blues
This a.m. we saw about 100 Snows 4 Blues heading east over our house going towards the lake. First of the season. Sounded like little yipping dogs. As usual, no one seemed to know which direction to go, north, west, south or in a circle. Five Bluebirds have been coming regularly to check out our motel facilities for winter nights. Usually several House Finches are with them. Today I was at the refuge. Road had a turn around sign just past the fish ladder but I was glad to see lots more water in the main pool than a wk. ago. River is over its banks in the fish ladder area. Saw only 3 juvie Harriers today. Kathy I saw 5 on 25 Sept.. Such magnificent birds!! Lots of ducks in motion but could only ID a few because of late afternoon light. Between the higher water the coming influx of large flocks of geese, the weeds should be flattened so more birds can be seen, hopefully before the main pool freezes!!! Patience, I say!! Frustration is what I get tho'. Re: [cayugabirds-l] Lesser Black-backed Gull on Hanshaw Road, Ithaca
What plumage/age? There seem to be a lot of this species on Long Island. We always get a few adults and one or two juveniles this time of year. I don't have complete confidence in my abilities to age large gulls, but I think that was a first-cycle bird. Saw it in the field again this morning, from inside the house, but lost track of it (or it had flown) by the time that I left around 8. tss -- Thomas S.
