[cayugabirds-l] Union Springs Snows & Blues

2010-10-07 Thread John and Fritzie Blizzard
This a.m. we saw about 100 Snows & 4 Blues heading east over our house going
towards the lake. First of the season. Sounded like little yipping dogs. As
usual, no one seemed to know which direction to go, north, west, south or in a
circle.

Five Bluebirds have been coming regularly to check out our "motel" facilities
for winter nights. Usually several House Finches are with them.

Today I was at the refuge. Road had a turn around sign just past the fish
ladder but I was glad to see lots more water in the main pool than a wk. ago.
River is over its banks in the fish ladder area.

Saw only 3 juvie Harriers today. Kathy & I saw 5 on 25 Sept.. Such magnificent
birds!! Lots of ducks in motion but could only ID a few because of late
afternoon light. Between the higher water & the coming influx of large flocks
of geese, the weeds should be flattened so more birds can be seen, hopefully
before the main pool freezes!!! Patience, I say!! Frustration is what I get
tho'.

[cayugabirds-l] new backyard bird

2010-10-07 Thread joe & Diana

 Hi.
Today in Skaneateles village, I looked out my back door and was
totally surprised to see a pair of bluebirds. As I looked at them, at
least three more flew in and landed in the the bushes. Guess I should
pay attention more! I've never seen them here before. They were still
there an hour later chattering as I took my kayaks off the car. Diana

[cayugabirds-l] Cayuga Bird Club speaker dinner

2010-10-07 Thread clr82
The Cayuga Bird Club is pleased to welcome Chris Wood and Daniel Fink as
guest speakers at our monthly meeting on Monday, October 11 at 7:30 pm at
the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. In their presentation, "eBird: Where
Birding Meets Science", Chris and Daniel will highlight what eBird is,
show what it can do for you as a birder, and teach you how to get
started. They will also show a few of the ways that eBird is being used
by science and conservation communities around the globe.

The Club will be hosting Chris and Daniel for dinner at Aladdin's in
Collegetown at 5:30 pm prior to the meeting. This is a great opportunity
for members to meet them in a casual setting and socialize with other
members while enjoying some great food. . If you would like to join us
for dinner, please rsvp to cl...@juno.com by Sunday evening so that
reservations can be made.

Have a great weekend of birding and hope to see you Monday night,
Colleen

[cayugabirds-l] Hog hole

2010-10-07 Thread Christopher Wood
Hog hole is quite birdy right now with several uncommon or late birds
including Black-billed Cuckoo(!), Nelson's Sparrow, Bay-breasted and
Orange-crowned Warblers. Most birds along lake edge or in goldenrod
patch just south of lake. I also flushed an interesting bird that
looked chatlike here but never heard it or saw it well.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Lesser Black-backed Gull on Hanshaw Road, Ithaca

2010-10-07 Thread Tom Schulenberg
What plumage/age? There seem to be a lot of this species on Long Island.
> We always get a few adults and one or two juveniles this time of year.

I don't have complete confidence in my abilities to age large gulls, but
I think that was a first-cycle bird.

Saw it in the field again this morning, from inside the house, but lost
track of it (or it had flown) by the time that I left around 8.
