Fw: [cayugabirds-l] Eider

2010-12-08 Thread Judy Read
The king eider was still in the creek late today until I left it at 4:50.

The creek is rapidly filling with what looks like ice being swept in to the
creek by the wind.
It has only been 24 hours since I was there last and if this continues viewing
behind the boathouse will only last a few more days.
I'm not that familiar with Fall Creek conditions, so that is just a wild guess.

The plus side to multiple trips to Ithaca for car repair, is multiple trips for
the eider.

About 2:30 this afternoon, I paid a visit to Stewart Park. A fellow from near
Canandaigua (Dave Morris?) said he had not seen the eider. I was setting up my
scope and he yelled to me from the boat house that the eider was back in the
unfrozen part of the creek. We viewed it from the path NW of the boat house
for about 5 minutes, when the bird suddenly took flight and headed due north
out of the creek and past the red lighthouse. We did not see it after that.
Myers is a possibility for tomorrow.

Also at Stewart, a Sharpshinned Hawk surveying the newly paved trail.

Circling over upper Sandbank Road about 2pm, a Turkey Vulture.

[cayugabirds-l] Owl Trip on Saturday

2010-12-08 Thread Ann Mitchell
I will be leading a trip up the east side of the lake to Rafferty Road
to see Short-eared Owls. We will be meeting at the Lab of Ornithology at
2:00, probably birding the lake on the way there. We will be heading back
at dark. Dress warmly.
Best,
Ann Mitchell

[cayugabirds-l] King Eider update for today

2010-12-08 Thread mwitmer
At 0805 the King Eider was perhaps 50 m n. from the swan pen, diving regularly
in the
vicinity of a small
group of Mallards. Pretty cold, but little wind, which made things almost
pleasant.
Excellent views in the
morning light, with the bird diving in gentle swells with slushy ice chunks.
About 0815,
after the eider had
surfaced amongst the Mallards, all of these ducks took flight, the Mallards
heading west
and the eider
taking its own course northward, landing several hundred meters out. Quite
distant.
I returned at 1250 and did not find the eider. The open water near the swan pen
was devoid
of ducks
except for a couple pairs of Mallards. Northwest wind up, readily producing
tears.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] The party's over but the owls were fantastic!

2010-12-08 Thread confer
I tried to send this a minute ago, but think I closed the compose window when I
was trying to copy email addresses. Sorry if this is a repeat.

I'm highly impressed by the effort of John and Sue to band saw-whets.
Cangratulations to them. I tried to band saw-whets for a few nights this fall
and hope to be able to set up an effort schedule like theres next fall. (John
and/or Sue could you call me at 539-6308, please).

I caught 27 saw-whets in about four and a half nights for 28 net hours and
didn't get started until late in the migratory season. I used only two nets at
a time.

It is amazing that so many banding stations have about 4-6% foreigh recapture,
suggesting that the total number of saw-whets banded in estern US approximate
4-6 of the entire saw-whet population.

We caught one saw-whet banded in May 2008 in Michigan.

As John and Sue report, second year birds were more common than any other age,
and females were far more common than males.

Our results do suggest that ther ar elots of saw-whets flying over this area in
fall.

I find it amazing that we cought this many in our front yard, but have never
seen or heard a saw-whet in our yard in 30 years.

[cayugabirds-l] The party's over but the owls were fantastic!

2010-12-08 Thread John and Sue Gregoire
Snow, high winds and frigid temps have settled into the Finger Lakes so we
reluctantly brought our fall owl migration effort to a conclusion. We'll be
trying
on nights with decent weather but anything caught by now has to be considered
wintering and not migrant. We caught 81 birds in all.

We operated between dark and 2300 on most nights with acceptable weather
conditions.
We did try an early AM night as well with no owls and kept the station open
until
0200 on our best night (17 saw-whets banded and one Foreign). That totals at 36
nights and 771.5 net hours. The majority of owls were captured between 2000 and
2200. Only one was caught at 2300 and none beyond that.

We banded 77 new saw-whets, had one repeat, 3 foreign recaptures (all from
Prince
Edward Pt, Ontario) and one gray phase Eastern Screech Owl. One of our first
saw-whets was recaptured by one of Scott Weidensaul's stations directly south
of us
in PA.

Of the 77 total, 16 were SY, 4 AHY, and 5 ASY (one probable TY). Eleven were
male
of which 3 were adults and we had three of unknown sex. That's 32% adult, 81%
female
and 14% male saw-whets. The screech owl was an adult, probable female.

Our measure of efficiency was 10.49/100 net hours.

This was our first real attempt at Saw-whets and we think it a success. Up
until now
the conventional wisdom was that very few Saw-whets passed through the central
Finger Lakes of NY. We strongly believe otherwise and hope to repeat the effort
next
fall. It's so easy to fall in love with these creatures.

[cayugabirds-l] sunshiny white throats

2010-12-08 Thread Asher Hockett
A flurry of activity this morning at home in Danby, as the sun shone for the
first time in days, had a flock of brightly colored White-throated Sparrows
with a few Golden-crowned Kinglets mixed in. There were also a mix of
finches, but no siskins and I tore myself away to go to work already late
w/o id'ing the rest.

Winter is a challenge, going to work and returning in the dark.
