behind-the-scenes research and conservation activities a the Lab of
Ornithology, as well as to get out on the trails during peak migration (18+
species of warblers today!). This has been one of our most popular public
events in recent years, and definitely fun for the whole family! A few more
details below:

See you there,

KEN

Migration Celebration!

Re: [cayugabirds-l] yard birds

2011-05-11 Thread Geo Kloppel
Just before sunset I added a MAGNOLIA WARBLER. Hoping for more
warblers ahead, as many of the fruit trees are just now coming into
flower. Expecting Cuckoos any day now! Might get one tonight for the
price of going outside to listen (if only the toads would shut up! -
their annual pool party has been roaring for days)

I walked the Wilson Trail after work. I didn't find many of the great birds
reported today, but did see my first R.T. HUMMINGBIRD and ALDER FLYCATCHER
calling just before the first house on the curve with the crazy stop sign.

As expected at this peak time, many birders were out in Sapsucker Woods today,
each finding a slightly different mix of species. The cumulative warbler tally
for the day is 18+ species, several of which I missed.

YELLOW WARBLER
MAGNOLIA WARBLER (1 by lone bench south of Sherwood Platform)
BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER (several throughout, including one female)
CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER (one on Wilson North, one south of Podell Boardwalk)
CAPE MAY WARBLER (two at bend in Wilson Trail North after second footbridge,
found by Chris Wood, Tom Schulenberg, Steve Kelling, and a fourth gentleman)
BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER (3+ all around Wilson Trail)
YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER
PALM WARBLER (1 south of feeder garden, seen by Mary Winston)
BAY-BREASTED WARBLER (as Kevin Ripka reported)
BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER (also found by Kevin)
AMERICAN REDSTART
NASHVILLE WARBLER (1 by lone bench)
NORTHERN PARULA (4+ all around Wilson Trail)
OVENBIRD (several throughout)
NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH (1+ migrant by green pool west of Wilson Trail near
Sherwood, plus birds on territory along Woodleton Boardwalk)
WILSON’S WARBLER (lone feeder and also lone bench along Wilson Trail)
CANADA WARBLER (between Sherwood Platform and lone bench)
COMMON YELLOWTHROAT

YELLOW-THROATED VIREO and RUSTY BLACKBIRD both continue to sing at intersection
of Wilson and West Trails. It is also an unusually good day to watch EASTERN
KINGBIRDS (7+), which put on quite a show brawling with each other in the
treetops.

[cayugabirds-l] Sapsucker Woods and my house.

2011-05-11 Thread Tom Hoebbel
My son Chris and I did a morning walk at SSW were we were given great looks
at a Magnolia Warbler(among many others) and on they way out a beautiful
Cape May Warbler...a life bird for Chris.

At home I had an Indigo Bunting at my seed feeder with other finches and a
Ruby Throated Hummingbird flyby which prompted me to make some syrup and
hang the feeder.

happy birding,
Tom

[cayugabirds-l] Hawthorn Orchard - GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER, Vermivoras, plus others

2011-05-11 Thread Chris Tessaglia-Hymes
Overnight, there was clearly a heavy movement of Vermivoras, as evidenced by
the abundance of that genera at the Hawthorn Orchard this morning.
Vermivoras were still in movement well into the morning (warblers still
flying well above tree-top height, producing "seet" flight notes).

After a not-too-thorough check of the Hawthorns (due to the distraction of
the really nice GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER in the Northeast corner, singing high
frequency, thin, buzzy song "zay-dzee-dzee-dzee"), there were easily 15+
NASHVILLE WARBLERS everywhere and a single TENNESSEE WARBLER (also at the
Northeast corner). I was there from about 7:45am to 9:30am.

List of notables is as follows:

4-5 GREEN HERONS (calling and flying around the area)

1 LEAST FLYCATCHER

2-3 Warbling Vireos

2-3 Red-eyed Vireos

Dozens of flyover Blue Jays (migrating)

1 Ruby-crowned Kinglet

1 Blue-gray Gnatcatcher

1 WOOD THRUSH

1 GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER (NE corner, slowly working West, singing constantly
- both of my parents got life looks at this bird)

1 TENNESSEE WARBLER (NE corner, great views)

15+ NASHVILLE WARBLERS (everywhere)

1 NORTHERN PARULA (NE corner)

4-5 Yellow Warblers

1 CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER

2-3 Yellow-rumped Warblers

1 Black-and-white Warbler

3-4 American Redstarts

1-2 Ovenbirds (NW corner and North ravine edge)

6-7 Common Yellowthroats

1 Scarlet Tanager

3-4 Rose-breasted Grosbeaks

2-3 INDIGO BUNTINGS (flyovers)

1 BOBOLINK (South of South ball field)

2-3 Eastern Meadowlarks (calling/display flights)

3-4 Baltimore Orioles

Good luck and good birding!
