Re: [cayugabirds-l] Orchard Oriole - Sapsucker Woods

2011-06-03 Thread Riko Stan
I saw an Orchard Oriole today as well, my very first!
We have a hummingbird feeder up by a huge window in the living room. I had
the screen down so I could clean it and as I was walking back to put the
screen back in I saw a small-medium sized bird sitting on the hummingbird
feeder. Something scared it(probably me) and it flew right in the house.
Both the cat and dog instantly started chasing the poor guy, so he flew into
windows multiple times before I could get the animals out of the room. I
opened all the windows, let him sit for a few minutes, then gently shooed
him out. He flew off just fine, so I hope he wasn't to hurt, but I got a
great close up view of him.

LOL! as I am writing this, a female cardinal flew into the room too. There
is the last suet cake right by the hummingbird feeder too. The female
cardinal usually hits it a few times a day, today she flew right in, did a
big loop into the dining room, and flew out another window.
Guess I better put the screens back up!

[cayugabirds-l] Bird ID help needed

2011-06-03 Thread Karen Steffy
I got back half an hour ago from jogging around Beebe Lake. There was a large,
hawk-like bird soaring over the lake, looking for fish. I saw it dive twice
for fish. The bird has a white head and underside and was reddish-brown on
top. I have looked on allaboutbirds.com and haven't found anything. It could
almost be a rough-legged hawk, except for the fishing part.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Karen

[cayugabirds-l] Orchard Oriole M and F at 1230

2011-06-03 Thread Chris Pelkie
Thanks for the heads-up on the Orchard Oriole. He was still singing a lot from
perches in a big circle around Kipps driveway, including landing in the tree
right over my head for a couple phrases. I spotted a female at first, then
realized it wasn't the singer, so there are at least 2 there as of 1230pm.
Excellent looks and nice song!

[cayugabirds-l] Orchard Oriole - Sapsucker Woods

2011-06-03 Thread Scott Haber
Susan Newman and I just spent a few minutes watching the young male Orchard
Oriole with Mark Chao at Sapsucker Woods. The bird was singing constantly,
spending most of his time in the trees in the gravel parking area at Kip's
Barn (on the east side of the building). Several times, he flew north
across Sapsucker Woods Road to the flowering Black Locusts on the hill just
across the road from the barn. It was interesting to note that the bird was
singing in flight as well, something I've never noticed in previous
encounters with this species. Mark also noticed that the bird is starting
to show streaks of the chestnut-brown on his breast that will be more
extensive as a full adult.

[cayugabirds-l] Orchard Oriole, Sapsucker Woods

2011-06-03 Thread Jay McGowan
Hi all,
The young male ORCHARD ORIOLE that Ken found a little while ago was
still singing as of a few minutes ago, now across the pond in the
Fuller Wetlands, close to the white barn. I never got the original
email, so I thought I would send this out in case others had the same
problem.

[cayugabirds-l] Prothonotary nest sites

2011-06-03 Thread Scott Haber
With all the discussion of the Prothonotary Warblers at Armitage Road
lately, I thought I'd share an interesting Prothonotary nest site that was
submitted to the Lab as part of the Celebrate Urban Birds "Funky Nests
Challenge":

2011-06-03 Thread Dave Nutter
Here's another clue to how Bob & John missed the Prothonotary Warblers:  Bill found them to be inactive yesterday evening too.  This was later in the day than when I saw them with Meena on Monday.  --Dave NutterBegin forwarded message:From: wroberts Date: June 02, 2011 8:54:31 PMTo: Dave Nutter ,bluehorsestu...@hotmail.comSubject: RE: [cayugabirds-l] Prothonotary Warblers AND Acadian Flycatcher, Armitage RdDave, Thanks for including me in your report and thanks to you and Ann I got

day for me especially with the Prothonotary. I stayed in the area for another
30 minutes and I later
returned in the evening to photograph the Yellow-throated Vireo. No
Prothonotary singing or visible
