[cayugabirds-l] shorebirds, Towpath Rd, Tyre Saturday 16 July a.m.

2011-07-16 Thread Dave Nutter
This morning a herd of birders gathered to scan the Montezuma NWR's shorebirds from Towpath Rd.  People included Jay McGowan, Shawn Billerman, Stuart Krasnoff, Susan Danskin, Bob McGuire, Gary Kohlenberg, Ann Mitchell and myself.  Birds were much as has been reported of late:KILLDEER - possibly hundredsSEMIPALMATED PLOVER - Jay mentioned seeing oneSPOTTED SANDPIPER - severalSOLITARY SANDPIPER - at least 1LESSER YELLOWLEGS - still perhaps the majority: hundredsGREATER YELLOWLEGS - at least 1STILT SANDPIPER - at least 3 in view togetherSEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER - at least 1LEAST SANDPIPER - possibly hundreds PECTORAL SANDPIPER - at least 2SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER - at least 1BLACK TERN - severalThe birds at Puddler's were closer than those at Knox-Marsellus to Towpath Rd.  I wasn't in on any attempts to view from East Rd.  The birds on the extensive mudflats on Knox-Marsellus would best be viewed legally from a Fish and Wildlife Service vehicle permitted to drive on the dike, but they would still be far enough away not to be bothered if civilians were allowed to walk there.  Jay actually had that driving privelege and probably has some more precise numbers of birds. I don't recall any current reports of Sanderling, Baird's Sandpiper, or Wilson's Phalarope, or other shorebird species, but the habitat is extensive in both impoundments, and birds keep moving in and out, so it's worth keeping tabs on the area.  Stuart & I left after briefly checking May's Point Pool (several WOOD DUCKS, GREAT EGRETS & TRUMPETER SWANS and a COMMON MOORHEN) but did not check other areas.Jay mentioned having seen an adult and a fledgling PROTHONOTARY WARBLER at Armitage Rd, and I see that Susan also added CLAY-COLORED SPARROW to her list, presumably the bird from King Rd, Seneca Falls.--Dave Nutter

[cayugabirds-l] Puddler's Marsh and Knox-Marcellus this evening. 2 Otters at puddler's marsh!!

2011-07-16 Thread Michael and Joann Tetlow
We arrived at Puddler's Marsh around 6:30. In spite of 90 degrees there was
no heat shimmer and good light. Great numbers of birds. Highlights are as
follows:

1 Stilt Sandpiper

1 Short-billed Dowitcher

2 Semi-palmated Sand.

4 Pectoral Sand.

1 White-rumped Sand.

4 Solitary Sand.

30 Spotted Sand.

250 Killdeer all over the mudflats at KM

30 Greater Yellowlegs

~1000 Lesser yellowlegs

500 Least Sand.

21 great Egrets flew in around 7:40 as did numbers of Great-blue
Herons until they totaled over 120.

We could not find the Wilson's Phalarope or Baird's but I bet they're still
there.

Our persistence was rewarded by 2 otters that came out and started feeding
on the water near the N-NE shore. We no longer cared about the birds we may
have missed. Mike and Joann Tetlow

[cayugabirds-l] OOB: American White Pelican at Whitney Point

2011-07-16 Thread Dave Nutter
Suzanne Henderson sent me a photo which a friend of hers took this morning (Sat 16 July 2011) of an AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN at Dorchester Park by Whitney Point (Broome County, Town of Triangle).  Since photos are not to be sent as attachments through Cayugabirds-L and I don't have a site to post it, anyone who wants to see the photo can email me directly, and I will forward it.

Subject: [GeneseeBirds-L] Coloured Wing-tags on Great Blue Herons and
GreatEgrets, Lake Huron

Once again we are Asking New York birders to look for wing tagged Great
Egrets and Great Blue Herons.
Any observations would be greatly appreciated.
Bill Watson

50 young Great Blue Herons and over 100 young Great Egrets from three
sites in Lake Huron have been marked with Green or Orange wing-tags
in the last month; each tag carries a unique number-letter combination.
New York birders are asked to watch for these birds and send details of
any
sightings (date, time, location, observer, color of tag and
number-letter combination) to chip.wese...@ec.gc.ca.
Also, please report any evening roosting sites and feeding aggregations
of 6 or more birds.

Thanks,

Chip Weseloh
