[cayugabirds-l] Montezuma this afternoon
This afternoon Puddler's marsh was mostly the same as has been reported except 1 molting adult Black-bellied Plover. At the visitor center around 3:30 the 6 Least and 2 Semipalmated Sandpipers were suddenly joined by (counting by tens) 350 Least and 300 Semipalmated Sandpipers plus a few Pectorals. I could not believe that after scanning these birds carefully I couldn't find even a possible Western or Baird's. It would have been nice to at least see Dave Wheeler's bird which by posture, molt and bill looks like a Western to me (but I'm terrible with photos). I saw my first obvious fresh juvenile Lesser Yellowlegs today. [cayugabirds-l] Southern Highlands
Hello all, 3 weeks ago I recorded 8-10 Type 1 Red Crossbills on territory in the Southern Hills south of Syracuse. Chris Wood and I did a tour of much the same areas yesterday and had 3 RED CROSSBILLS, one undetermined Type (probably Type 1 but it was too distant --same location a type 1 was singing 3 weeks ago) on Muller Hill in Madison County and a pair of Type 10s on North Road --same road where there's been 1-2 pairs of Type 1s for 6 weeks.. We had a lack of Type 1s yesterday (at least no definitive observations), but I suspect they are in the middle of nesting and are just quiet. Other good sightings were a young NORTHERN GOSHAWK at close range on Muller Hill, nesting CLIFF SWALLOWS outside DeRuyter, calling SWAINSON'S THRUSHES on North Rd Pharsalia (they nest there), a few Broad-winged Hawks, a flyover PURPLE MARTIN in Pharsalia that Chris saw and heard, calling VIRGINIA RAIL at Perkins Pond Pharsalia, and much more. Several Red Crossbills have been reported in recent days from the western Adirondacks. Chris had 2 very probable Type 10s in early July in the western 'dacks while doing a BBS route, and back in March I recorded 12 Type 10s in the western 'dacks as well. cheers, Matt mail2web.com - Microsoft® Exchange solutions from a leading provider - http://link.mail2web.com/Business/Exchange -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] Summerhill Sunday
Ann Mitchell, Dave Nutter, Gary Kohlenberg, and I spent a few hours at Summerhill this morning, most of it walking Salt Road and a bit of Hoag and Dresser Roads. My main goal was to investigate the cone crop and to try and locate any crossbills. Having recently spent time in Algonquin Provincial Park and Aiguebelle National Parks in Canada (PO & PQ) and noting the almost total absence of cones on White and Black Spruce, and Red and Jack Pine, I was glad to see an abundance of cones of both Norway and White Spruces, Red Pines, and Larches. As Matt Young has noted earlier, this could well be a great year locally for crossbills. Although we could not locate any that were feeding, or perched and singing, the four of us did have one fly-over Red Crossbill on Hoag Road, and I, separately, had one fly over on Salt Rd. Below is my report to eBird.
