I finally got to see a Snowy Owl after trying for a couple years! The owl was
across the Thruway from the Waterloo Outlet Center about 2 PM, then flew to the
corner tower by Timberland. From there it landed atop a telephone pole behind
the northwest corner of the outlet center. I spotted it
Hi, Birders,
Steve had posted that we had a large Cooper's Hawk in our backyard, 1 mile
east of Brooktondale. A friend of ours had left us a chunk of deer carcass,
set on top of the brush pile. Crows worked it over for a couple of days,
eating, and hiding suet over in the field across the
I spent about 2.5 hours watching the Snowy Owl at the Waterloo Outlets Mall
this afternoon, from around 2:30 to 5 PM when it got dark. These are my
observations, including what the owl was eating!
Since I am not a shopper and have never been to this mall, it took me a few
drives around the
Forgot to mention that when I first saw Snowy Owl on the triple lamppost by the

Wow! Thanks for all those great observations. I was worried that it might be
hunting the median . I'm glad to hear that it's successfully hunting. I, too,
wish it would move away from the mall to a safer place. Thanks for sharing.

I've just seen from our house near Interlaken, numerous large flocks of SNOW
GEESE flying south over Cayuga Lake. They are quite high and flying in
formation, unlike their more scattered patterns when flying more locally. I
estimated 3-4,000 and there could easily have been more. They might
Carl Steckler just phoned the Lab of Ornithology to report that he is watching
the Snowy Owl at the outlet mall--perched on the Sunoco sign. 1:10 Thursday.

Mary Jean and I also paid a visit to the outlet mall this afternoon, with three
things on our list: a radio/cd player, storage bins and a snowy owl. We were
able to check all of them off our list. When we arrived late afternoon, we
drove the interior perimeter of the mall looking for the owl
The whole time I was there, I was near or on the back-of-the-stores access
road, adjacent to the T'way, either on foot (when owl was across T'way at
Sunoco service area) or in my car (when the owl was on the mall side of the
T'way). The retention pond was between my car and Post 6 at the back
