Ken Rosenberg was kind enough to call me out this morning to see a
semi-cooperative ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER with Nashville Warblers and
Ruby-crowned Kinglets in the flowering trees on my front lawn on Tareyton

2012-05-02 Thread Anne Marie Johnson
Great morning in Sapsucker Woods as well. I arrived at about 7:45 and walked
until 8:30. I started from the Fuller Wetlands and came across a nice warbler
flock at the foot bridge along the lower trail. Here are the highlights:

Warbling Vireo (1 singing near Fuller Wetlands, another silently foraging near
footbridge)
Yellow-throated Vireo (singing persistently along lower trail)
Red-eyed Vireo (singing near feeder garden, hunted down with the help of Chris
Wood)
Yellow-rumped Warblers (many everywhere)
Blackburnian Warbler (singing softly along lower trail)
Black-throated Blue Warbler (singing softly near footbridge)
Yellow Warblers (2 or 3)
Northern Waterthrush (heard from Podell boardwalk)
Ovenbird (heard in 2 locations)
Least Flycatcher (heard from lower trail)
Wood Thrushes (2 calling only)
Ruby-crowned Kinglets (several in different places)
Baltimore Oriole (singing at edge of pond near feeder blind)
White-throated Sparrows (many, many everywhere, including 3 high up in a tree
near the Sherwood Platform!)
Swamp Sparrow (near Sherwood platform)

Wes Hochachka reported seeing a Palm Warbler near the Sherwood Platform and a
Scarlet Tanager being chased by two Rose-breasted Grosbeaks.
And Chris Wood pointed out a Solitary Sandpiper near the feeder garden.

[cayugabirds-l] Baltimore orioles!

2012-05-02 Thread K. Alice Wood Fox
Hello folks!

Of course, I am referring to the birds and not the baseball team from my
hometown.

While I was at the Tompkins Recycling center yesterday (behind Maine Source), I
saw two Baltimore Orioles in the trees across from the main office. This
morning, I saw and heard the Baltimore Oriole that frequents Commonland
Community's east end. He has a very pretty and distinctive song; it was great
to hear that he's back!

Happy birding!

[cayugabirds-l] Worm-eating Warblers

2012-05-02 Thread geokloppel
Seeing that we might get a well-timed break of morning sunshine, at 8:15 I
drove across the valley to visit Worm-eating Warbler habitat below West Danby's
north pinnacle. On the walk through the forest I flushed a couple of Wood Ducks
from a tiny vernal pool where frogs and salamanders breed. Hermit Thrushes,
Black-throated Green Warblers, Blackburnian Warblers, Blue-headed Vireos, a
Scarlet Tanager and other birds were present but not very vocal. When I got to
the slopes at 8:45 the Worm-eaters were silent. I sat down and waited. I could
easily hear quite distant birds singing down in the L-P Preserve, including a
Yellow-throated Vireo. At 9:10 the sun finally climbed above the north pinnacle
and began to illuminate the treetops, at which point 4 or 5 Worm-eating
Warblers began counter-singing. One perched at eye level directly in front of
me. They kept it up strongly for 20 minutes, like a delayed dawn chorus, then
the cloud cover returned and they all went quiet.

like to count species and try to raise funds yourself. Thank you for your
consideration!

Also, this weekend, I'll be leading a special walk for kids at the Land
Trust's Park Nature Preserve. This and all SBQ events are free. Please see
below for details on all the walks.

[cayugabirds-l] Possible Yellow Rail

2012-05-02 Thread Leona Lauster
I have been in contact with Eric Lewis. I asked him if the bird could
have been a Sora. He said he thought about it but the bird was way
too small. He said he saw one bird and heard another which was a long
series of clicks def. not a Sora. He found these birds at Huckleberry
Swamp. I can't get there for several days as my husband just had an
operation. Still waiting for him to come out of Anesthesia- all went
well so far.

2012-05-02 Thread Jay McGowan
Just to clarify, the Orange-crowned Warbler in the Hawthorns this morning
was singing softly, which is what first alerted me to its presence, at the
edge of the Hawthorns at the corner of the ravine and the dirt track that
comes up from the pond near the Recreation Way off Mitchell Street (so, the
northwest corner of the Hawthorns.) Highlights were similar to Evan's, with
14 warbler species, including Nashville, Orange-crowned, Blue-winged,
Northern Waterthrush, Black-and-white, Norther Parula, Common Yellowthroat,
Blackburnian, Black-throated Blue, Chestnut-sided, Yellow, American
Redstart, Palm Warbler (10+!), and of course dozens and dozens of
Yellow-rumped. Least Flycatcher, Hermit Thrush, Eastern Towhee, Baltimore
Oriole, and Blue-headed Vireo were also around.

[cayugabirds-l] Yellow-headed Blackbird

2012-05-02 Thread Janet Akin
I made the trip to Broome County from Seneca Castle this morning. Spotted the
bird before I got out of the car. Stayed in view across the marsh for the 1/2
hour I stayed. He was really aggressive to any bird that came his way RWBB,
Grackles even a Yellow Warbler which it chased around the marsh. Beautiful
bird!!! Thanks Dave for posting the great directions. Also saw my FOY Gray
Catbird while I was watching the blackbird. Janet Akin, Seneca Castle

[cayugabirds-l] Great fall-out conditions for tonight/Thursday morning

2012-05-02 Thread david nicosia
All,

We have a warm/stationary front stalled across NY state right now running
roughly
Syracuse to Elmira. A warm humid summery air mass is flowing northeast through
the Ohio Valley and encountering this colder air mass east of the front in NY.
At work,
before I left, I was still detecting migration with our new Dual Polar radar
products
and the migration stopped like a wall just east of this frontnear Ithaca!
Tonight the front might creep farther east but it is expected to remain
stationary
through 2 am at leastpossibly later. There will be continued southwesterly
winds of
warm/humid air coming up the Ohio Valley tonight. I believe there will be a
huge influx
of more migrants that will be raining down again as we saw
this morning as they encounter low cloud ceilings, and chillier air east of
this front.
So tomorrow likely will be another huge day east of this front where there are
low clouds
around. So keep an eye on the radars and satellite before going out tomorrow.
you
want lots of low clouds and even light drizzle that is where it will be
raining birds!

I experienced a mini fallout early this morning. I saw at least 20 warbler sp.
flying
by low and fast into the woods just like fall at higbee beach and could not ID
any of
them as they were moving too fast. I had 9 species of warblers in my yard that
I
was able to id in 20 minutes before work that stopped in my yard.

Of course I have to work again tomorrow...so those who canget out an
enjoy...
and post!

Mine arrived about 6:30 pm and buzzed the hanger outside the window which was
still feederless. Of course I remedied that omission in short order!

I guess today was hummingbird day!

[cayugabirds-l] Tuesday, 5/8: Science Cabaret on Night Migration

2012-05-02 Thread Karen Edelstein
Science Cabaret presents:
*A River of Birds in the Sky: tuning into night migration*

When: 7 PM, Tuesday, May 8, 2012
Where: Lot 10 Lounge, 112 S. Cayuga Street
FREE!!

Unbeknownst to most people, songbird migration in North America happens at
night. And many species give short call notes while they fly to maintain
contact with their fellow travellers and prevent mid-air collisions. We'll
talk about ways to detect and monitor these calls, with the possibility of
someday watching real-time, continent-wide songbird migration via the
internet. This amazing phenomenon may turn YOU into a night owl!

Bill Evans is an ornithologist and naturalist who focuses on night
migration, and ways to mitigate bird collisions with cell towers and wind
turbines.

Harold Mills is a computer programmer, birder, and musician who has a
lifelong fascination with sound.

TRIVIA WITH BECCA AT LOT 10 FOLLOWS THE CABARET...or if the winds are
right, there's a chance that attendees may be able to migrate up to Mount
Pleasant with Bill to listen to the birds flowing overhead.

For more information, visit http://www.sciencecabaret.org.

Science Cabaret is made possible through a partnership with the Light In
Winter Festival of Science and the Arts: http://lightinwinter.com.
