Re: [cayugabirds-l] Common Nighthawk, Stewart Park

2012-05-18 Thread Dave Nutter
This evening Stuart Krasnoff, Gary Kohlenberg, and I spontaneously gathered by the Cascadilla Boathouse in Stewart Park at about 8:15pm. Around 8:30 Gary was the first to pick out a single COMMON NIGHTHAWK working its way north over Cayuga Inlet or Jetty Woods. It foraged over the vicinity of the lakeshore of Treman Marine Park for a minute or so before we lost it against West Hill, apparently headed north again. While not seeing any more nighthawks we amused ourselves by looking at the crescent of Venus through Stuart's scope.--Dave NutterOn May 18, 2012, at 10:06 AM, Jay McGowan wrote:Brad Walker, Livia Santana, Matt Medler, Emma Grieg, and I had a COMMON NIGHTHAWK at Stewart Park last night around dusk (8:20?). [cayugabirds-l] Upland sandpiper at Syracuse airport

2012-05-18 Thread Meena Haribal

Hi all,
I was in the plane on the way to Chicago sitting on runway when I saw an Upland
sp sitting on A10 marker nervously watching the plane. Once we moved it dove
into grass.
It was lovely view of all lakes some 20 miles from the plane including MNWR and
other interesting features

[cayugabirds-l] W Danby Migrants

2012-05-18 Thread geokloppel
Around my house this morning: Tennessee Warbler, Bay-breasted Warbler,
Blackpoll. Many other warblers, but those three are the clearest migrants.

No Acadian Flycatcher yet...

[cayugabirds-l] Hawthorn Orchard - 18 May 2012 Very Quiet

2012-05-18 Thread Christopher T. Tessaglia-Hymes
I birded the Hawthorn Orchard area this morning from about 7:45am to 8:30am. It
was another quiet morning there. Only one likely migratory individual, a female
Black-throated Blue Warbler. As evidenced by the foraging behavior of this
individual, the food resources in the Hawthorn Orchard are pretty much depleted
at this point. I'll keep monitoring the area for a little bit longer into this
spring, because it is still a good resting location for migrants.

Also, a Gray Catbird in the ravine area just North of the NE corner of the
Hawthorn Orchard was producing some interesting vocalizations. These sounds
initially had me wondering if there was a hoarse-sounding Mourning Warbler in
that spot. This catbird was repeatedly giving a very rough
"churry-churry-chorry-chorry" vocalization, interspersed with some normal
catbird squeaks and other sounds. Kind of makes me wonder if a Mourning Warbler
was there yesterday and I missed it by not going...

Below is the checklist I submitted to eBird:

Hawthorn Orchard, Tompkins, US-NY

May 18, 2012 7:45 AM - 8:30 AM

corner. Despite observing her forage for several minutes, actively looking and
plucking through leaves, she was not seen consuming anything; but she was
visibly actively looking.

[cayugabirds-l] Park Preserve this morning

2012-05-18 Thread Anne Marie Johnson
I walked around the Park Preserve in Dryden this morning from about 8:15 to
9:30. The highlight was a CANADA WARBER singing from a perch high over Six
Mile Creek. I also came across a recently fledged batch of PURPLE FINCHES
following Mom around begging to be fed. And I saw a BLUE-WINGED WARBLER and
several MAGNOLIA WARBLERS. I heard one PRAIRIE WARBLER singing from the
neighboring property.

Other highlights included:

Ovenbirds
Common Yellowthroats
Louisiana Waterthrush
Black-throated Green Warbler
Indigo Bunting
Alder Flycatcher
Carolina Wren

[cayugabirds-l] Common Nighthawk, Stewart Park

2012-05-18 Thread Jay McGowan
Brad Walker, Livia Santana, Matt Medler, Emma Grieg, and I had a COMMON
NIGHTHAWK at Stewart Park last night around dusk (8:20?). Brad first
spotted it over Jetty Woods, and it eventually flew right over our heads on
the shore of Stewart Park and headed up towards Ithaca Heights.

This morning I drove around the Ithaca Airport. Nothing too exciting, but
lots of the expected species, including NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, BLUE-WINGED
WARBLER, BLACKPOLL WARBLER, TENNESSEE WARBLER, ALDER FLYCATCHER, WILLOW
FLYCATCHER, EASTERN TOWHEE, EASTERN MEADOWLARK, SAVANNAH SPARROW, and FIELD
SPARROW.

Here at Sapsucker Woods, I just saw and heard a singing WILLOW FLYCATCHER
near the platform at the Fuller Wetlands north of the building.

Cheers,
-Jay
