Just walked out of my house off Salem Drive in Northeast Ithaca to the sound of RED CROSSBILLS! I walked around front and saw them foraging in the line of spruces along the road (on Tareyton Drive). As they flew away to the south I saw at least nine birds. Talk about a surprise yard bird. Jay --

Glad everyone has been getting to see the whimbrel. However, it would be best to park by road and walk in - the supposed dirt road that folks drove on yesterday is actually a newly set drainage tile ditch and it WAS newly seeded just before folks arrived on Thursday. Thank you. Colleen Richards

This evening at 1900 hrs., from my yard, I spied 2 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS feeding in the skies over Brooktondale. Amazing swoops and gyrations against a rosy sunset glow. I also heard the flight call of an UPLAND SANDPIPER high over the house. Another hard-to-get Yard bird! Steve Fast

This afternoon my Dad and I stopped at Montezuma for a couple of hours, and there was some excellent shorebirding. We started with the visitor center which is flooded now, and looks good for shorebirds. Here we had eighteen (18) SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS and four (4) LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS.
