[cayugabirds-l] Stevenson Rd Golden Plovers
As I drove down Stevenson Road at 8:15 this morning there were two AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVERS in the newly-plowed field SW of the compost piles. Also there were at least 75 KILLDEER. [cayugabirds-l] Red Crossbill in northeast Ithaca
I heard (but didn't see) a Red Crossbill flying over lower Sapsucker Woods Road this morning. I met Laura Stenzler at the Lab of Ornithology and we birded the first part of Wilson Trail from l:00 to 1:30. Other than the usual suspects seen, we had a nice flock of warblers including Magnolia, Black-throated Green, Tennessee, Wilson's, a female Redstart, and a singing Common Yellow-throat. There was also at least one Red-eyed Vireo, a singing Warbling Vireo, and a Red-breasted Grosbeak. Not bad for 1/2 hour of birding. [cayugabirds-l] Hummingbirds
Interesting following the comments on sightings and missing RT Hummingbirds. Still have our female and juvenile here in Big Flats. No males. Actually, we are seeing more activity than during the first half of the summer. I have a theory on why they sometimes seem to disappear in summer, only to return. I think they have just found a new, better food source that may be temporary. It comes to mind that insects are good source of protein for them. So, today, I observed our female RTH land on the stalk below the Monarda didyma flower head, and pick something from under the dried flower head. I theorize it is small spiders or similar insects. She then took flight to draw nectar from the few remaining flowers on adjacent stalks and again perched under a dried flower head to pick something from underneath. Dr. Fenwick will appear in a segment about domestic cat predation on birds and other wildlife. The program was prompted by an August American Bird Conservancy news release on a University of Georgia and National Geographic study of house cats that were allowed to roam outdoors. The activities of the cats were recorded using small video cameras attached to the cats collars, leading to some startling results. The issue has recently been covered by almost 100 newspapers nationwide as well as by CNN, CBS and USA Today. [cayugabirds-l] Common Goldeneye, Myers Point
Hey all, Just a quick note to mention my best bird from an otherwise quiet lakewatch at Myers Point this morning was a months-early COMMON GOLDENEYE which flew by distantly heading north up the west side of the lake, then back south again a little closer (presumably the same bird) half an hour later. I saw a medium-sized, compact dark duck with large white wing patches in the secondaries (and beyond), too compact for a merganser or White-winged Scoter. On its way south I got a better look at the face and it did indeed appear to be a goldeneye. Very strange. Also, on Monday I had an early PALM WARBLER along the new Lansing Center Trail on Rt. 34 between Triphammer and East Shore Drive. This is kind of a cool place, pretty open and agricultural feeling, but with enough goldenrod and hedgerows to be interesting. Feels like a Connecticut Warbler or Dickcissel could show up, and it's a great place for fall Palm Warblers for sure. [cayugabirds-l] Blackbirds Caspian Terns - Montezuma
At about 7:15 p.m. this evening there were huge flocks of blackbirds ( RwBs, C. Grackles, E. Starlings) converging on MNWR near the Visitor Center. My guess is that there were several hundred thousand birds swirling, swarming and streaking over and through the wetlands and trees for approximately forty-five minutes before all movement concluded as the birds descended into the rushes and nearby trees as the sun was setting. I felt privileged and very excited to be witnessing a magical spectacle. Occasionally a flock would dive low over my position making it possible to hear and feel the sound of the flock as it swooshed in an undulating or serpentine manner. Regrettably I did not have a video camera to record this amazing event. In addition there were 16 Caspian Terns that flew in a very loose flock over the Visitor Center parking lot on a southern tack.
