[cayugabirds-l] Yellow-headed Blackbird - Van Dyne Spoor Road

2012-09-30 Thread Leona Lauster
There was a extremely large mixed flock of blackbirds in the marsh on Van Dyne
Spoor Road this evening. Many of the birds were sitting on cattails and weeds
instead of diving in. I got out my window mount and soon found a beautiful
male Yellow-headed Blackbird. The head and breast were a brilliant yellow. The
body, wings and tail were black and I could easily see the white wing patch on
the wing that was facing me. I was thrilled to get such a good look at this
bird.

[cayugabirds-l] Yet another Nelson's BluegrassLane

2012-09-30 Thread Kenneth Victor Rosenberg
While walking my dog in the fields off Bluegrass Lane SOTB of Hanshaw Rd, we
flushed over 200 sparrows from various parts of the fields (mostly in the SW
most area and mostly CHIPPING and SAVANNAH). One lone bird flushed from some
taller green grass near the wet margin between the dense switchgrass (?) and
sparse legume fields - based on the pale back and orangey headed look in flight
as it circled by me, I identified it as a NELSON'S SPARROW. very close to where
one was seen last year in early October.

[cayugabirds-l] Sapsucker Woods - Marsh Wren, Lesser Yellowlegs

2012-09-30 Thread Jay McGowan
No luck with Wes's Nelson's Sparrow this afternoon, but I just had a
ticking MARSH WREN in the cattail patch just northeast of the loading dock
by the building (west of north end of closest staff parking lot), 5 LESSER
YELLOWLEGS are feeding in the shallow water off the Sherwood Platform, and
a flock of 8 or more TENNESSEE WARBLERS were in the alders near the Fuller
Wetlands.

[cayugabirds-l] Sapsucker Woods Nelson's Sparrow

2012-09-30 Thread Wesley M Hochachka
There must be a lot of NELSON'S SPARROWs around, because this morning I has
one pop up in the wetland to the north of the Lab of Ornithology this morning.
It's a new Sapsucker Woods bird for me and in eBird. I saw the bird for about
30 seconds while I was standing on the short boardwalk leading to the Owen's
Platform, feeding on a cattail in the narrow water-filled area to the east of
the walk. The bird subsequently dropped down and a bit north toward the thick
alders that cross the boardwalk. When in view, I had nice looks at the bird
(streaked upper breast and flanks with a warm base colour, a smaller sparrow
more comparable in size to a chickadee than Swamp Sparrow as judged by the
Nelson's Sparrow displacing a Black-capped Chickadee from a cattail, warm tan
in the lighter shades on the sides of its head with a narrow grey mid-crown
stripe).

Apologies for not posting earlier, as I have just gotten to a place where I
could both enter my list on eBird and post this e-mail message.

[cayugabirds-l] Very good birding - Upper Buttermilk

2012-09-30 Thread W. Larry Hymes
Late yesterday pm I had very good birding during my fast exercise walk
looping around Upper Buttermilk. (I always take by binocs on these
walks, Dave.) I usually try to see/hear at least 10 species. This time
I set a record for this time of year with 24 species. It seems that
many birds apparently decided to abort their migration due to the
drizzly, overcast conditions of the night before. The highlights were:
6 woodpecker species, including YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, SWAINSON'S
THRUSH, and 4 warblers - MAGNOLIA, BLACK-THROATED BLUE, BLACK-THROATED
GREEN, and BLACKPOLL.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Nelson's Sparrows - Marten's Tract

2012-09-30 Thread Drew Weber
The sparrows were on the south side of the road. About 200 yards out
the road to the tree and between the two ditches.

I can send out precise coordinates when I get home. The best I can do
on my phone is 43.08311, -76.70699

I, too, saw a Nelson's Sparrow this morning at Marten's Tract. The bird I saw
was on the dike about 150 yards North of the Southeast corner of the main
impoundment. Excellent extended views right around 9:00am.

Drew and Joe, where were your birds located?

Thanks and good birding!!

[cayugabirds-l] Saw-whet migration

2012-09-30 Thread John and Sue Gregoire
It appears we are in the early days of a huge Northern Saw-whet owl movement.
Banders in Ontario and other more northerly sites in Canada and the US are
reporting
huge catches. PA stations are already reporting owls.

Here last night we had a terrific night with 12 young saw-whets banded! That's
16
and one screecher for September so far.

Bill, Chris, Ken and others who monitor night sounds -are you able to pick out
saw-whets? If so, last night should have been huge. It would help our network's
efforts to hear about your findings vis a vis saw-whets. To my ear, on the
ground,
they vocalize very little during migration and almost never with the usual call.
