Re: [cayugabirds-l] Nelson's Sparrow (Clay-colored continues)

2012-10-14 Thread Kenneth Victor Rosenberg
Jay remains one step ahead of most of us, but the CLAY-COLORED SPARROW
continues to show itself into the late afternoon at Stewart Park -- in the
weedy patch off the central pavilion. At least 2 WHITE-CROWNs are in this
patch as well, and a LINCOLN"s found by Tim Lenz.

A single SURF SCOTER has drifted over to join a flock of RUDDY DUCKS off the
east of Stewart Park. A single female REDHEAD is in the COOT flock -- a bit
early according to eBird.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Clay-colored Sparrow

2012-10-14 Thread Gary Kohlenberg
I found Jay's Clay-colored Sparrow at 1pm. It was showing itself nicely in the
tallest shrub right at the west side base of the dock. It just flew to the
lakeshore weeds parallel to the Pavillion restroom building.

The scoters took off shortly after they arrived and headed south. They are
now visible out on the lake from Stewart Park, about straight out (but
still distant) from East Shore Park.

[cayugabirds-l] Swamp sparrows under feeders

2012-10-14 Thread Marla Coppolino
This morning there are two SWAMP SPARROWS foraging under my bird feeders
(Pleasant Valley Road in Groton). Also two WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS and a
few days ago WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS.

Also at or near my feeders within the past few days:

JUNCOS
BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEES
TUFTED TITMICE
WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCHES
Many CARDINALS, at times, what appears to be mother and father cardinals
with their messy-feathered juvenile children
GOLDFINCHES
HOUSE FINCHES
BLUE JAYS
DOWNY WOODPECKERS
HAIRY WOODPECKERS
RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS

And about 20 WILD TURKEYS that ran across my property.

[cayugabirds-l] Friday night/Saturday morning Saw-whet Owl Migration was awesome!

2012-10-14 Thread John and Sue Gregoire
Anyone checking Paul Hurtado's NEXRAD summary for the night before last had to
be in
awe of all the intense movement throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. Many
of
those returns were from migrating Saw-whet owls that had been bottled up by the
south winds we were experiencing.

The frontal passage and shift of winds to the NNW brought some nasty weather but
calmed by dusk on Friday allowing us to open nets.
In the early evening we thought it would be another slow night but by 2100 we
had
seven saw-whets. By the time we finished examining, banding and releasing them
we
had 6 more! That went on for the rest of our net checks until we quit at 0300!

We ended the night with 27 new saw-whets banded and one repeat! That's the best
we
have ever done in one night. Our season total is now well beyond last year's
and the
migration season is young.

Whenever we were extracting owls from the nets we could hear others vocalizing
all
around us. Little whistles, grunts and wheeps, not the usual call. It was a
purely
amazing and awesome experience.

Given our success and similar reports from other stations in NY, PA, VA and
MD, we
can't begin to imagine the number of owls that had been fattening up and then
burst
southward Friday night. Over such a broad and deep front in just our section of
the
northeast there must have been thousands!

Strong south winds are back with us so we are all hoping for another surge when
they
abate.
