Re:[cayugabirds-l] Northern Saw-whet Owl super night
Congratulations John and Karen! It was indeed a super migration night in the Finger Lakes. Our station is about 30 miles northwest of the Confer's and we had 40 little owls. That's 76 from just these two little points so imagine how many were coming over the broader Finger Lakes area the night of the 16th!!! We were busy from 2000 through 0200. Take a look at Paul Hurtado's NEXRAD summary page for the 16th and the 12th -amazing blooms throughout the Atlantic Flyway. That same night stations up and down the coast, inland PA and VA all reported fantastic and record numbers of owls. In PA some 300 were banded at 9 stations. the banders in Georgia and Alabama are anxiously awaiting our owls (we hope). As we were working our nets we could hear an amazing number of owls in the general area that were vocalizing with wheezes, growls, grunts and whistles! We actually closed the station for an hour around when we also had at least 3 screechers and three great horned come too close for comfort! Nights like that should be once in a lifetime and we've been honored with two such this season! Re: [cayugabirds-l] Hummer on Powell road, Interlaken
Rufous Humming Bird at Marty's house in Interlaken seen feeding 6 times from 4:25 PM until 5:45 or later, this afternoon. Lee Ann Van Leer arrived and we saw it briefly, but it zoomed away; I decided to leave in case the bird didn't like 2 observers sitting there watching it, so Lee Ann would be able to get a longer look. I hope she did.
