Re: [cayugabirds-l] TV with white wing feathers

2012-11-09 Thread John and Fritzie Blizzard
My apologies (in my haste) for saying "Susan" since Susan said "Black Vulture"
whereas Dave said "Turkey". Indeed, Dave & I had some discussion last Dec.
about me questioning whether I had actually seen the partial white wing. Seems
he also had seen it & confirmed my sighting, that it wasn't just a pattern on
the wing caused by the late afternoon sunlight. (I REALLY can't remember the
exact conversation & didn't have it in my records.)

Last I knew, the speed limit on Rte. 13 was 55 mph & it's illegal to use a hand
held device so Susan had an (il)legal excuse for her honest error but doubt it
would have held up under the scrutiny of the man in the crisp blue uniform.
Yes, I know, it's easy to fly with a gas pedal since we don't have wings ...
(hopefuly we will merit them someday!)

Re: [cayugabirds-l] White-winged Turkey Vulture has returned, seen 9am...

2012-11-09 Thread nutter.dave
Susan described a Black Vulture well, and the white-winged Turkey Vulture doesn't look like that. There are a lot of vultures around, and they could both be here. The bird I saw is the same size, shape, posture, and behavior as any other Turkey Vulture. The only difference is that the outer *half* of the left wing is bright white - not restricted white areas only on outer primaries, and not symmetrical. I can understand Susan wanting a better look than just craning through the windshield at 65mph. I was fortunate in that I was coming down NYS-13 and had turned onto the Cayuga Heights Road exit ramp - going fairly straight and level, with lots of room, no other traffic, slowing down - when I saw this bird among several other Turkey Vultures circling and landing in a tree at the corner by the end of the ramp, so I got a good enough look although I didn't spend a lot of time. Anyway, I think we should all just keep our eyes out for cool vultures and other raptors. I've noticed Turkey Vultures gathering as if to roost along the north side of Dryden Road just east of Game Farm Road, among other places. I also saw two separate Cooper's Hawks today, and when I rolled in to Stewart Park early this morning a young adult Bald Eagle (dusky smudges on white head) was eating a fish atop the floating branched log out in the lake from the dock.--Dave NutterOn Nov 09, 2012, at 07:34 PM, Susan Danskin wrote:Oops, guess my 65 mph iding skills are out of practice. 2012-11-09 Thread Anne Clark
Last year, it did spend quite a bit of time at the Stevenson Road Compost.
Lots of TVs have been out there since summer. Had 62 at one point about 1
month ago.

I will report if I see it when censusing banded crows this weekend.

[cayugabirds-l] re Salt Point Cutting

2012-11-09 Thread Karen Edelstein
Hi Donna, John, and others concerned

After reading Jay McGowan's Facebook post this morning on this topic, I
called Steve Colt, the Lansing Parks and Recreation Supervisor. It was a
very productive conversation. Steve is very open to working with the
birding community to create an improved bird habitat at Salt Point. As John
points out, Katrina, as a new board member, is going to be a great asset in
this effort. She certainly has the Town Supervisor's ear, and it seems like
many decision-makers in Lansing Town Hall are interested in now moving
ahead with improving Salt Point as a natural habitat, and revisiting the
restoration ideas that Bob McGuire, I, and others outlined 10 years ago. I
stressed to Steve the importance of maintaining natural vegetation, not
exclusively nursery plantings, and keeping the site vegetatively
un-manicured, to the degree that it doesn't prohibit the Town from keeping
up with safety issues, etc. According to Steve, Kathy Miller, the Town
Supervisor, is even considering prohibiting vehicular access to all but the
boat launch point of Salt Point. This would be fantastic, in my opinion,
and would bring back the idea of using Salt Point for quiet nature
observation and gentle recreation. I hope to set up some meetings with
Steve, Katrina, and interested birders in the next several months to start
charting a new course in better management of Salt Point. Please contact me
if you'd like to be part of this effort.

[cayugabirds-l] Taughannock Loon Watch - Nov 7-9th

2012-11-09 Thread Ethan Kistler
Hi all,

Last Wednesday (Nov 7th) was very slow at the Taughannock Loon Watch with only
39 loons heading south (5 north) in addition to 135 sitting on the water.
Yesterday was more rewarding with 443 south (19 north), which brought the
season total over the 4,000 mark. Today was another slow day with 102 south (10
north). The loon count currently sits at 4,249.

Other highlights from the past three mornings include: three flocks of Northern
Pintail totaling 249, a single flock of 115 Snow Geese, Bald Eagles, Peregrine
Falcon, Snow Buntings daily and seven flyover White-winged Crossbills this
morning.

[cayugabirds-l] MWR

2012-11-09 Thread Carol Keeler
I stopped at Mud Lock this morning to check on the eagles. The pair was
sitting to the right of the new nest. Later, they moved down to the dead trees
to the right of their old nest. A juvenile eagle was sitting near the
spillway. One of the eagles started screaming and went after the juvie and
chased it from the area. The injured Greater Scaup is still there and was
swimming about. Also in the area was a large group of Mallards, a Great Blue
Heron, and a group of Dark Eyed Juncos.

I saw very little at the Refuge. There was nothing in the Visitor's pool,
probably because it was frozen. A few Gulls were at LaRue's. It looks like
they regraded the road up to the shorebird area. In the main pool I saw a
couple of Pied Bill Grebes and some Gadwall. Many ducks were out further but
too tiny to ID. The shorebird area had Herring Gulls and one Greater Black
Back Gull. The ducks were Shovelers, Green Wing Teal, a Pintail, Gadwall, and
Mallards. A huge flock of Canada Geese came in. I didn't stop at Benning.
It looked like the same ducks and lots of Canadas. A female Harrier flew over
me to the other side of the Thruway. I looked for the Cattle Egrets on rt.
89, but didn't spot them.

There were other birders there so maybe someone else will report.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Myers Point - Spotted Sandpiper

2012-11-09 Thread John Greenly

To all Cayugabirders,

Regarding Jay's post about the cutting on Salt Point (north side of the
creek across from Myers park):

Our newly elected Lansing town board member Katrina Binkewicz has found
out that the town highway dept has been directed to do extensive cutting
on Salt Point. We are moving fast to try to stop this and preserve the
habitat, and we might need help from others who bird there, especially
Lansing residents. If we need to convince the town that this is
valuable for wildlife, and for the people who go there to see birds, we
might need you to come to a town board meeting. If you would be willing
to do this and help make the case for keeping good habitat there, please
respond to me, NOT TO THE LIST, and I will contact you if there's an
opportunity. For now, it would not be productive to contact the town
directly- we don't want to create a confrontational situation unless we
really need to.

Many thanks,
John Greenly

[cayugabirds-l] Black Vulture

2012-11-09 Thread danskin
Its deja vu (this exact scenario occurred back in January of 2011 or 2012)… At
8:30 this morning I was once again speeding up Rt 13 on my way to work. Just
west of the mall, I spotted a BLACK VULTURE soaring low along with 4 TVs.
Slowed down as much as reasonable on the highway to confirm white wing tips,
shorter tail, less dihedral. Hope it hangs around in the Lansing/Northeast
area of town long enough for others to find.

Sorry I couldn't post earlier; can't teach and text or email at the same time.
