[cayugabirds-l] Blue-winged Teal - Mays Point (late report)

2013-03-22 Thread tigger64
Apologies for the lateness of this post. Jim Tarolli and I found a Blue-winged
Teal, a female, on March 17th at Mays Point Pool (MNWR). I think it's a
first-of-season for the Basin. There were many many dabblers there and
probably male BW Teal somewhere.

[cayugabirds-l] Monday Night Seminar: Caren Cooper--Science Revolution and Public Participation

2013-03-22 Thread Charles Russell Eldermire
Please join us, and help spread the word!

MONDAY NIGHT SEMINAR AT THE CORNELL LAB ORNITHOLOGY
March 25, 2013
7:30 p.m. in the auditorium

Science Revolution: Advances Powered by Public Participation
Caren Cooper, Research Associate, Bird Population Studies, Cornell Lab of
Ornithology
Host: André Dhondt

New science frontiers in ornithology and many other fields are now possible
because so many people participate in research through their hobbies. With
citizen science, information can be gathered from across broad geographic areas
down to individual backyards. Public participation in science may help answer
questions such as, How can House Sparrows be minimized in the New World and
saved in the Old World? How can we protect sea turtles and their global
habitats? How can we make new discoveries in the tiny microbial world that
lives on us? In the universe around us? Track diseases? Monitor pollutants?
Manage environmental crises? Dr. Cooper says all this and more can be achieved
through citizen science.

[cayugabirds-l] RFI: looking for Downy Woodpecker and WB Nuthatch nesting

2013-03-22 Thread Marie P. Read
Hi everyone,

If anyone has seen Downy Woodpeckers excavating or White-breasted Nuthatches
investigating a nest hole (in accessible spots) I'd love to hear about them.
Looking to photograph these two species (as well as many others) at the nest
this spring.

Thanks very much for any leads

[cayugabirds-l] Turkey Vulture hunting

2013-03-22 Thread John and Sue Gregoire
Recently we watched a our FOY TURKEY VULTURE scanning a group of fields near
us. The
flight was so interesting we pulled off the road to watch.

It was soaring, as usual, but the flight was very, very close to the ground,
and the
vulture was tipping and dunking and rising, just like a Harrier. Because it was
so
low and close, it looked extra large, almost scary. We could easily see the red
head
swiveling back and forth, searching.

There were crows on the ground, foraging in a liquid manure spread, so maybe the
vulture thought there might be something to eat. It never landed and eventually
disappeared over a treeline. The behavior was a treat to watch.

Last seen at 8:55 this morning.

I have actually seen the bird there many mornings in recent weeks, when I drive
by the Gun Hill apartments on Lake St. (between 8:35 and 8:40 most weekday
morning), but have not been in a position to stop and get bins on it to
identify until today.
