[cayugabirds-l] Ringwood Rd Brown Thrasher

2013-04-20 Thread Marie P. Read
I stepped outside to do a chore a few minutes ago and heard snatches of a song
that seemed out of place up here - loud, bright, with a definite mimid-feel to
it. Shortly afterwards, a Brown Thrasher landed in my flower garden and started
tossing leaves about. Only the second time I've recorded one up here (the first
time was ~15 years ago!)

Good yard bird for these parts.

[cayugabirds-l] Gnatcatchers @ Renwick

2013-04-20 Thread Suan Yong
FOY blue-gray gnatcatcher briefly chased a ruby-crowned kinglet for a good
comparison of small eye-ringed flitters. Almost certain that a second
individual was about. This is in the eastern end of the woods, near the stone
arch. A downed tree and some flooding makes trail conditions less than ideal.

Found myrtles but no audubon's at swan pen. At least four spotted sandpipers
are around.

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Ringwood Rd Brown Thrasher

2013-04-20 Thread John Confer
We, too, heard a Brown Thrawsher singing this morning for the first time this
year. It was in our (extended) yard on the south side of Hammond Hill Rd.. That
makes at least four people seeing 5 thrashers for the first time this year.
Must have been a good night for thrashers to migrate.
As I recall, we have had one singing for a few days almost every year for about
the last 6-7 years, and usually then disappeare. Well, except last year when
I saw a pair together three or four times. I wonder if they quit singing or
move on.

Yellow Palm Warbler at the parking access at Goetchius this morning. Beautiful,
tame little bird.

Cheers, john confer

[cayugabirds-l] Stewart Park - 4/20

2013-04-20 Thread David Weber
Hi all,

Stewart Park put on a great show this morning, with the male YELLOW WARBLER
continuing at Swan Pen, at least 6 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS, a GREEN HERON at
Renwick, at least 2 BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERS, and 10+ YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS.

No terns, catbird, or grebes that I saw, but a decent assemblage of
remaining ducks, including RUDDY DUCKS, REDHEADS, RING-NECKED DUCKS, LESSER
SCAUP, MALLARDS, COMMON MERGANSERS, HOODED MERGANSER, and AMERICAN COOTS.

Also notable were an OSPREY, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS, NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED
SWALLOWS, and a BARN SWALLOW.

Good birding,

[cayugabirds-l] Cayuga Bird Club Kayaking field trip

2013-04-20 Thread Paul Anderson

All:

I am working on arranging a new kind of field trip for the bird club.
The idea is to go up to the Montezuma area and explore some of the
waterways by kayak. I have talked with an outfitter who can provide all
the gear and lead the trip. I'm now looking for people who are
interested in coming along.

The exact details are still up in the air, but I thought we would go to
the Howland Island area and spend between 4 and 6 hours on the water.
The outfitter is familiar with the area and can take us to interesting
spots. The open dates are the 6th and the 13th of July. It will cost
between $50-$60 for each individual. We need at least six people for it
to be feasible, but we can probably take as many as 20. . Members of
the club will get priority, but if there is room we can take non-members
too.

Please let me know by email if you would like to go on this trip, and
the date you prefer, by the end of next week. I need to give the
outfitter a deposit soon so that we can reserve the date, so I need at
least four firm commitments before I can do that.

Thanks!

-Paul

[cayugabirds-l] Audubon's Warbler continues, and other highlights

2013-04-20 Thread Anne Marie Johnson
Tim and I saw the AUDUBON'S YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER at the Swan Pen at 1:00
this afternoon.

We found several UPLAND SANDPIPERS, one HORNED LARK, and several KILLDEER
at the Empire Days Fairgrounds.

Several locations at Montezuma NWR held large numbers of BLUE-WINGED and
GREEN-WINGED TEAL, as well as good numbers of SHOVELERS, and we found one
pair of GADWALL along the drive. At a pool near Carncross Road we saw more
of the same ducks plus two AMERICAN WIGEON. Along the dirt portion of
Carncross, we saw lots of both YELLOWLEGS.

We saw 3 OSPREY on 5 20 near MNWR and 3 more near Cayuga Lake State Park.
The Osprey pair in the nest on the cam in the Montezuma visitor center have
one egg.

We saw BUFFLEHEAD in several locations along the west side of the lake from 89.

[cayugabirds-l] Stewart Park Swan Pen Saturday 4202013

2013-04-20 Thread William Roberts
I observed a pair of Yellow-rumped warblers at the Swan Pen between 4:20 p.m.
and 5:20 p.m. I did not see the Audubon YrW. In addition I did scope a Yellow
Warbler(foy) on the east end of the Swan pen and a Blue-gray Gnatcatcher on the
west end. There were also a dozen TVs circling the boat house for a brief
period of time.
