[cayugabirds-l] mystery song posted a few days ago solved

2013-05-03 Thread Meena Madhav Haribal
Hi all,

A few days ago I posted a bird song, which sounded like both Junco and
Goldfinch (only two of you dared to guess) turns out is a Dark-eyed Junco.
Yesterday he was caught red handed. I have a cell phone video where you can see
him.

He was in the same nearby location as I had heard him in the first post. He
could be seen and heard in a location behind the Cornell University
transportation booth and parking lot, where there is a path to go down to
Plantations Road, where they have remodeled new steps. Nearby there are lots of
tall white pines and saved Redbuds from Redbud woods once existed on west
campus and now parking lot, In Ithaca NY 14853. GPS 42.447884,-76.472467 if
you need.

Enjoy Junc'o'finch

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Stewart Ave Redtail Chick

2013-05-03 Thread Melissa Groo
I photographed the nest a week ago, on the 26th of April. There were two chicks
and they looked pretty freshly hatched. One was being fed by a parent, but I
never saw the other one move. I've put up two pics (not very good and heavily
cropped to show detail) on the CBC web site in my photo album at:
http://www.cayugabirdclub.org/gallery

A couple days ago I went back and didn't get a glimpse of a chick, but did see
a nice cache near the sitting parent of a chipmunk and starling...

At the Stewart Avenue bridge over Fall Creek the red-tailed hawk was feeding
a lone chick this evening. Initially there looked to be two furry blobs, but
one of them turned out to be a squirrel. A passerby who checks out the nest
when he walks by every day said this was the first time he'd seen the mother
stand up to reveal a chick.

For the photographer, the shadow of the bridge falls upon the nest around
6pm: before that you get a late afternoon sun; after you get a nice even
 shadow.

 The annoying fence remains.

I found just about the same birds in Sapsucker Woods early on Friday morning
(6:30-7:15 AM) as I did on Thursday (again I also missed the birds that
others reported). I did find a couple of possible new arrivals - a VEERY by
the middle of the Woodleton Boardwalk and a WARBLING VIREO by the Fuller

[cayugabirds-l] SSW this morning

2013-05-03 Thread Chris Pelkie
I walked around WIlson starting at north and circling the pond. Lots of singing
HOUSE WRENs, a couple GREY CATBIRDs in song, many other regulars.
I saw 3 adult GREAT BLUE HERONs: 1 on nest, and 2 widely separated on the
'back' (south) pond all at the same time. There was also a flyover later on my
walk but I don't know if it was one of the previous 3.

No warblers that I could pick out but Mark probably could. However, near the
pavilion on south Wilson, I heard exactly one phrase from a WARBLING VIREO.
Then it shut up and put on the invisibility cloak. I know what group of trees
it came from but gave up looking and listening after 5 min.

Love the Mink story, Dave. I believe I found a mink den, visible from Podell
Boardwalk. A bit hard to describe, but enter the boardwalk from the lab, go
about 30' then look northwest (toward the pond). I was hunting for the Green
Heron (last week) that I had just seen fly across and land on the south side of
the berm, when instead I spotted the mink moving around near a 'beaver dam'
like pile of sticks with entrance hole up on the land, and after a few more
minutes lying there sunning itself. The tricky bit is that you must be lined up
with a lot of intervening trees and stumps to see this. Certainly without the
mink moving, I never would have noticed it.

As I was about to enter the lab with nothing new but the elusive vireo, I
looked one last time from the bridge toward the pond and there 30' away on a
floating log was a SOLITARY SANDPIPER. Very good looks, it even turned for me,
but as I started to walk away satisfied with a new year bird, a CANADA GOOSE
came over and gave it a goos(ing) so it flew a short distance toward the
feeding area.

[cayugabirds-l] Spring Bird Quest, fundraising, and public bird walks for the Finger Lakes Land Trust in May

2013-05-03 Thread Mark Chao
Over Memorial Day weekend, I’ll be visiting preserves of the Finger Lakes
Land Trust, leading public bird walks, and raising pledge money per species
found. We call this effort the Finger Lakes Land Trust Spring Bird Quest
(SBQ).

Since its inception in 2006, the Spring Bird Quest has raised about $25,000
in support of the Land Trust’s efforts to preserve vital habitat for the
birds we love. Please contact me if you’d like to pledge or if you’d like
to count species and try to raise funds yourself. I usually find about 90
to 100 species over the weekend. Even the smallest pledges are most
welcome.

In addition to the four walks I’ll lead for the SBQ, I’ll be leading two
other bird walks for the Land Trust this month. The first, especially for
kids and families, will take place this Sunday. This and all SBQ events are
free. Please see below for details on all the walks.

Thank you for your consideration! I’m looking forward to finding birds with
you!

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Request for this listserve.....

2013-05-03 Thread Don
I am glad we are having this discussion about noting locations. I must say,
as a relative newcomer to the Ithaca area, it has been quite a challenge to
figure out where some of the posts are referring to---but I find it very
helpful when people mention at least the approximate town they are referring
to. Even just a general, ballpark location such as that helps me to
decide whether to spend the time looking up the specifics. (I guess we have
to look things up, to narrow things down!---but I digress) I don't have a
GPS device, and my Internet connection is too slow to allow me to use Ebird
( it just won't load, it is so graphics-heavy), so I rely mostly on paper
maps and books. I was so glad when the Guide to Birding the Cayuga Lake
Basin came out, as I finally began to discover where some of these places
are. For example, until the book came out, I thought the potato building
was on the Cornell campus! But when people say things like Smith Road,
the red barn, the upper field, and so on, I am still often at a loss as
to where to begin. I am gradually making progress, however.

I also try to keep my gas costs down, so I generally don't go far for one
bird, except for special occasions, but if there are several nice birds
clustering in a rough area I might investigate the details and make the trip
If it is a rare or unusual bird of course, greater detail is very welcome.
I would imagine that it could get quite tedious to be typing a lot of GPS
numbers along with the message, for the majority of posts. At least a
mention of the nearest town (except for the most well-known places) should
be quick and easy.

One other thing---I encourage folks to continue to mention if they are
willing to take a rider for a given trip! I'll try to do the same!

Many apps give you your GPS location and many will help you get their.
One $0.99 iPhone app Don't Get Lost lets you COPY the Lat and Lon so you can
paste them into an email. I Agree trying to get those digits moved over by
memory I'd difficult. Too bad a hyperlink doesn't exist yet (that I know of)
that you could click on a lat/Lon pair that would take you to map!

Hundreds of birding sites in the Cayuga and Seneca Lake basin are on the
map, most with a brief description. Click Collaborate and you can add
info edit the map too.

[cayugabirds-l] looking for a bird guide for the weekend

2013-05-03 Thread Robyn Bailey
Hi everyone,

There is a couple visiting Ithaca this weekend for a workshop at the Lab, and
they would be interested in going out birding with someone in the local bird
club while in town. If anyone would be willing to take them birding on Sun. or
Mon. morning (the 5th or 6th), please contact me and I will pass along your
information.

Thank you,

Robyn Bailey

Re: [cayugabirds-l] looking for a bird guide for the weekend

2013-05-03 Thread Linda Orkin
So there are two SSW walks this weekend, both Saturday and Sunday at 7:30 and a
bird club field trip to Hammond Hill on Sat leaving the Lab of O parking lot at
8:30.

I guess you are saying they just want a personal guide. But these are options
if no one materializes. And they can self guide if they use the Guide to
Birding in the Cayuga Basin.

Just some thoughts.

Linda Orkin.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Request for this listserve.....

2013-05-03 Thread Geo Kloppel
On the iPhone, the Google Earth app lets you copy the coordinates of any
location you're viewing (touch OPTIONS and swipe to POSITION to find the
copiable coordinates). Then you can paste them into an email or anywhere else
you wish.

If you paste them into Apple Maps, the mapping app can take you right to that
location, but first a slight format adjustment is required: the Google Earth
app outputs them with a space between the last digit and the letter indicating
direction. Apple Maps doesn't like the space, so after pasting in
XX.xx N you have to delete the space to get XX.xxN, or your search
will return a No Results Found.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Stewart Ave Redtail Chick

2013-05-03 Thread nutter.dave
Last Sunday (28 April) I stopped on the Stewart Avenue bridge to rest after biking up from downtown and to check on the Red-tailed Hawk nest. I seemed to have arrived toward the end of a feeding session. A single fuzzy white chick stared intently at its parent. The little one was clearly interested in food, but not what was proffered. Next to the adult's talons was the cute, big-eyed face of a Flying Squirrel. I wondered how the diurnal raptor caught the nocturnal rodent. The meal - at least the part that I saw - was mostly skin and fur. I suppose this is par for Flying Squirrel, but I was surprised that the fare included so much hair, and even when the offering was dripping with saliva, the eyas was unenthusiastic, although it did eat some. The adult ate several furry bites, including the entire flat tail in one gulp, then settled down to brood.--Dave NutterOn May 02, 2013, at 09:49 PM, Suan Yong suan.y...@gmail.com wrote:At the Stewart Avenue bridge over Fall Creek the red-tailed hawk was feeding a lone chick this evening. Initially there looked to be two furry blobs, but one of them turned out to be a squirrel. A passerby who checks out the nest when he walks by every day said this was the first time he'd seen the mother stand up to reveal a chick. For the photographer, the shadow of the bridge falls upon the nest around 6pm: before that you get a late afternoon sun; after you get a nice even shadow. The annoying fence remains.
