[cayugabirds-l] Additions: RE: Knox-Marsellus Labor day evening: Fantastic pergerine show
I neglected to mention some of the other birds yesterday in post. There was a juvenile SANDHILL CRANE, which seemed to be alone in a grassy patch that ventured into the marshy area. Every step it took it tested for the firmness of the ground and hesitated for a second before continuing. After few steps flew away to water's edge and drank deeply several gulps of water, where its parents joined who were feeding somewhere else. One of the parents loosened something in the water and let the young feed on it. Then the parent picked up a feather and tested it and threw it back into the water again, when the a gull picked it up and played with it for few seconds. Then they (Sandhill cranes) all in a file walked along the edge of the water. I don't know what they did afterwards as it started to pour at that time. Then there was a Raven who was croaking from the Tow Path woods. Other birds of interest were an EASTERN KINGBIRD, male and female NORTHERN HARRIERS and OSPREYS and a BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER heard only. [cayugabirds-l] Monday Highlights - BV, Olive-sided Fly, Red Knot, Whimbrel, Buff-breasted
Birding with Jim Tarolli, we first saw two Black Vulture at Stevenson Rd in Ithaca. Proceeding up to Mud Lock we were lucky enough to see Red-headed Woodpecker and Olive-sided Flycatcher. At Towpath Rd we found Red Knot, Whimbrel, Buff-breasted, and White Pelican. We couldn't find the Eurasian Wigeon or any small terns. Dave Wheeler N. [cayugabirds-l] Peregrine shows
On the Rochester Birding Association-hosted field trip onto the dikes at Knox-Marsellus a week and a half ago we first saw a Peregrine Falcon repeately diving at an immature Bald Eagle high in the sky. Later the tables were turned and a Bald Eagle attacked a Peregrine Falcon, so I don't know what it means. On Tuesday the 27th of August I saw a Peregrine Falcon over Knox-Marsellus being vigorously and closely chased by a couple of Caspian Terns. --Dave Nutter -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: Welcome and Basics Rules and Information Subscribe, Configuration and Leave Archives: The Mail Archive Surfbirds BirdingOnThe.Net Please submit your observations to eBird! --
RE: [cayugabirds-l] Peregrine shows
Small birds like to harass larger birds, and sometimes the larger birds fight back. I photographed a Peregrine/Bald Eagle interaction on 1 January 2013, during the Ithaca Christmas count: https://picasaweb.google.com/KevinJ.McGowan/Winter20122013#5830086336675688290. [cayugabirds-l] Sapsucker Woods, Tues 9/3
Tilden and I found some scattered migrants around Sapsucker Woods on Tuesday morning. * BAY-BREASTED and BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER together with chickadees along the Hoyt-Pileated Trail (regrettably, former bird seen by me only) * BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER at the first split along the Wilson Trail North * A couple of other unidentified warblers with chickadees and Red-eyed Vireos here and there * An adult GREEN HERON plus a mother WOOD DUCK and four ducklings seen from the Sherwood Platform Despite cooler weather, a slight breeze, long garments, and application of repellent, we found that the biting insects were still pretty troublesome. [cayugabirds-l] black vulture
I was out in our front yard shortly after 7 PM looking for nighthawks when I noticed a large, dark bird far to the SE. It was coming slowly toward me and against the air flow (clouds moving from the NW). It got fairly close, then suddenly turned about and headed back the way it had come. I noted periods of soaring alternating with several flaps of its wings. In soaring, the wings were held at only a slight dihedral and came straight out from the body, not hunched like in turkey vultures. At a distance, I initially thought great blue heron, but decided the wingbeats were more rapid than I would expect to see with the heron. Unfortunately this is not a new yard bird, as Susie saw one last year here in the Spring. [cayugabirds-l] Earthflight (PBS)
Just noticed a series coming up called Earthflight, A Nature Special Presentation that purports to be a bird's-eye tour of 6 continents, observing animal migrations, etc. This Sat on PBS at 8pm (and probably other times): North America, snow geese, pelicans, bald eagles... Appears to be the first of 6 1-hr shows over the fall. Ep 2 is Africa, cape gannets, fish eagles, flamingos, kelp gulls, vultures.
