Canada Geese are culled in many areas because there are TOO MANY of them to get
rid of any other way. Boston's Logan Airport is doing catch and release for
the Snowy Owls - they bait with rodents, and catch them and move them away from
the airport.

Canada Geese are so numerous, they can take out more than just one engine and
THAT'S what takes a plane down. Here is how Logan Airport deals with Snowy
Owls:

They are reluctant to report owls, because of situations like this. Basically,
the Owls because of their size are a threat to airplanes taking off and
landing. If I recall, they need to make an effort to discourage the owls from
hanging out on the runway, but if those fail, then can and do shoot the owls.
This is not limited to JFK, but can happen at any airport.

While not ideal in my mind, you will be hard pressed to find anyone, especially
in the government who would potentially risk hundreds of human lives for one,
two or even 3 Owls. Its the same reason why Canada Geese are culled in many
areas.

Just another risk Snowy Owl's have to deal with when they come this far south.

2013-12-09 Thread Christopher T. Tessaglia-Hymes
You're welcome.

Other major airports can only follow suit if they know of the alternatives and
have complete contact information for certified raptor banders or wildlife
rehabilitators who agree to conduct any capture and relocation effort.

Sincerely,
Chris

Canada Geese are culled in many areas because there are TOO MANY of them
to get rid of any other way. Boston's Logan Airport is doing catch and
release for the Snowy Owls - they bait with rodents, and catch them and
move them away from the airport.

Canada Geese are so numerous, they can take out more than just one engine
and THAT'S what takes a plane down. Here is how Logan Airport deals
 with Snowy Owls:

Basically, the Owls because of their size are a threat to airplanes

While not ideal in my mind, you will be hard pressed to find anyone,

[cayugabirds-l] Recrudescent behavior at this time???

2013-12-09 Thread W. Larry Hymes
I've recently observed what I would consider recrudescent behavior in
three species of birds. I would think that this behavior would occur
more closely to the autumnal equinox, rather than the winter solstice
that we are fast approaching. While in Virginia I saw huge flocks of
ROBINS, some of which were in full song normally associated with the
breeding season. Also, I saw two male HOODED MERGANSER next to each
other displaying with full crest and head bobbing. Two females were
nearby and paid them no attention! Yesterday at our feeders I noticed a
behavior I've never before seen in JUNCOS. Two birds were sitting
facing each other about 2 apart, and both were moving their heads up
and down, apparently in response to each others movement. I observed
this for about 20 seconds, before they discontinued their interaction
and flew off. Then a short time later I saw 2 birds (same ones??)
engaged in vigorous aerial combat.

Have others of you also noticed breeding/territorial behavior in birds
at this time? Any observations or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

2013-12-09 Thread Betsy Russell
I did call the NYC phone # given this morning in order to register my
sentiments re: Snowy Owls being shot at JFK. The call was routed to Albany
where is was kindly and carefully explained to me that this issue needs to be
addressed by the public in writing, hard copy, snail mail if it is ever going
to reach the agency (DEC) that will most likely address it. The woman said
that one should also request a reply with contact info. so that you can follow
up if you want to.

I asked about e-mailing and the woman said the way the system worked in Albany
it should only be hard copy. They scan them into their system and then send all
letters regarding a particular issue on the the agency that will most likely
address it. She explained if it is not done by hard copy your complaints will
enter a big black hole. For what it's worththis is

Hi. Thanks for all the info on the Snowys at JFK which is cross-posting on

I believe that any communication is helpful, despite what the person at the
contact phone number said. Two suggestions:

(1) You can contact the Port Authority directly by sending a message from
their web site at: http://www.panynj.gov/contact/contact-us.htm
(2) Contact the NYSDEC Region 2 Natural Resources Supervisor at
r2nat...@gw.dec.state.ny.us and ask them to engage with the Port Authority
to stop the practice of shooting the owls.

Thanks Betsy for this information. I think it is horrendous that such a

where is was kindly and carefully explained to me that this issue needs to
be addressed by the public in writing, hard copy, snail mail if it is ever
going to reach the agency (DEC) that will most likely address it. The
woman said that one should also request a reply with contact info. so that
you can follow up if you want to.

I asked about e-mailing and the woman said the way the system worked in
Albany it should only be hard copy. They scan them into their system and
then send all letters regarding a particular issue on the the agency that
will most likely address it. She explained if it is not done by hard copy
your complaints will enter a big black hole. For what it's
worththis is the address I was given.

Speaking of bird control, it is going to the dogs. grin

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Recrudescent behavior at this time???

2013-12-09 Thread Kevin J. McGowan
There is no such thing as recrudescent behavior in birds, that is, behavior
that normally develops in the spring that reappears in the fall when the day
lengths match. That's not how it works. Bird gonad growth and the
accompanying breeding behavior is stimulated by the CHANGE in daylight length,
not the actual length of the day itself.

So, think again about what you're seeing and why. Faint, inexpert singing by
migrants in the fall comes from hatch-year birds that are working to practice
and crystalize their songs. Winter songs can be the same thing (crows do this
too; I watched a hatch-year crow going through all the vocalizations just
yesterday), or, as in Northern Mockingbirds or Eastern Screech-Owls, they serve
the same function as spring songs: keeping others out of their (winter)
territory.

Ducks actually form mating pairs on the wintering grounds, so lots of species
are starting to do courtship displays right now.

Concentrated food sources, such as feeders, often brings out aggression among
flocking birds.

Birds do a number of interesting and unexpected things. They do make mistakes,
but there usually is a functional explanation to most bird behavior that is
appropriate for the time and context.

Best,

Kevin

Subject: [cayugabirds-l] Recrudescent behavior at this time???

I've recently observed what I would consider recrudescent behavior in
three species of birds. I would think that this behavior would occur
more closely to the autumnal equinox, rather than the winter solstice that we
are fast approaching. While in Virginia I saw huge flocks of ROBINS, some of
which were in full song normally associated with the breeding season. Also, I
saw two male HOODED MERGANSER next to each other displaying with full crest and
head bobbing. Two females were nearby and paid them no attention! Yesterday
at our feeders I noticed a behavior I've never before seen in JUNCOS. Two
birds were sitting facing each other about 2 apart, and both were moving their
heads up and down, apparently in response to each others movement. I observed
this for about 20 seconds, before they discontinued their interaction and flew
off. Then a short time later I saw 2 birds (same ones??) engaged in vigorous
aerial combat.

Have others of you also noticed breeding/territorial behavior in birds at this
time? Any observations or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Larry

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Petition about Snowy Owl killings

2013-12-09 Thread John and Sue Gregoire
Thanks Linda! The correct place to voice our complaints is not Cuomo or the
legislature but with the Port Authority of NY who has cognizance of and lead on
this
horrendous action. This petition will help ease the way. If you write or email
be
sure to copy to the Mayor of New York City to get a little extra oomph. BTW, the
ruling covered all the NY area fields under Port Authority cognizance.

As background, a very dear friend and fellow raptor bander Sammy Chevalier
worked at
JFK in the 70s and 80s as their bird and animal control officer. As is
currently
the practice at Boston's Logan, Sammy trapped, banded and relocated all raptors
that
posed threats to themselves and aircraft. For him it was a full time job and he
had
plenty of volunteer helpers. I wonder what happened after he retired? I see the
job
title changed but common sense/ talent didn't convey.

Reply-To: Andrew Baksh birdingd...@gmail.commailto:birdingd...@gmail.com

I have compiled from all the e-mails sent on the subject of the killing of
Snowy Owls at JFK, a list of the resources a number of you submitted. The list
can be accessed here
http://birdingdude.blogspot.com/2013/12/nyc-kills-snowy-owls-while-boston-saves.html

This way, it is easier than wading through e-mail threads. It covers phone
numbers to the online petition link. If anyone has any other resources to add,
please e-mail me and I will add it to the list.

Also, if anyone has already penned a letter to the Governor and would be
willing to share their format as a template, I would gladly add it. This will
help those who are too busy to craft one themselves.

Keep up the pressure y'all!

Cheers!
