[cayugabirds-l] Cayuga Lake Swans
Not sure if these are FOY for the basin, but on Jan. 1 there were 3+ Trumpeters south of Mud Lock, and 2 Mute seen from Harris Park. Many Tundras obviously. Good numbers of geese, very few ducks. Several hundred distant Herring Gulls on the ice edge as seen from Lower Lake Rd. David Wheeler N. [cayugabirds-l] 2014 Cayuga Lake Basin First Records
In addition to the 98 species recorded on the Ithaca count, I'm aware of 3 other species reported on 1 January elsewhere in the basin. Two were the MUTE TRUMPETER SWANS which David Wheeler found south of Mud Lock. The third species is SNOWY OWL, and because this is a remarkable irruption season for this normally rare-in-our-area bird, I am including all records from 1 January - four of them so far. Below is the list of all 2014 records which were unique finds, thus deserving, in my opinion, recognition of the birders who found them. Non-rare birds found multiple places by multiple parties will simply be credited to "Ithaca CBC". As I learn of more (or corrected) First-of-Year (FOY) records I hope to put them in a table, as in past years, on the Cayuga Bird Club web site. --Dave Nutter
