I'm thinking that they are starting to filter in .. there does seem to be a
big influx recently.

Would people agree there's been a big influx? Or have they all just been

south of here have started to filter north again.

Just looking through the digests for the last few days and saw no mention
of robins. We saw about a dozen robins on Sunday afternoon. They were
browsing in a patch of bare grass on swamp college rd in Jacksonville.

[cayugabirds-l] Robins

2014-02-27 Thread Janet Akin
I do Wednesday night Raptor Survey at Montezuma. We have been seeing large
numbers of robins the last few weeks. Last week from my survey spot on Morgan
Rd. I counted over 200 going to roost. At my home in Ontario County I have had
about 30 in my hedgerow and bird feeding garden all winter. They are still
feasting on Mountain Ash berries and Winterberry in my garden. Janet Akin

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Robins

2014-02-27 Thread Dave Nutter
In early January there were scores of American Robins along Lake Road near Long Point State Park in the Town of Ledyard. They eat the cedar berries. I've seen groups of Robins in such fruited woodsy areas all winter, but it does seem that recently there have been more of them in other places, flying about, and on exposed lawns. I wonder how many are the local winter woods birds fanning out and how many are an early spring influx.--Dave Nutter

[cayugabirds-l] CBC Field Trip Saturday

2014-02-27 Thread Suan Hsi Yong
FYI, I'll be leading a field trip this Saturday (3/1).
We'll meet at 8am at the lab parking lot, and plan to be back around 2pm.
Forecast says cold and windy, so dress for cold and windy :-D.
Likely destinations are along the lake up to Aurora, possibly Union
Springs, and maybe the Indian Field area for Snowys etc.
All are welcome.
FMI, email or call me at 607-351-9334.

Suan

PS. Last Sunday at SSW the first wooded area of Wilson Trail North hosted
an unending supply of Robins chattering away -- I'd guesstimate several
hundreds -- all within a relatively small area.

[cayugabirds-l] Book talk with Harry Greene: Tracks and Shadows, March 6

Tracks and Shadows: Field Biology as Art
Book talk by Harry W. Greene
Thursday, March 6, 4:00 pm
Stern Seminar Room, 160 Mann Library
Harry Greene's new book Tracks and Shadows: Field Biology as Art (University of
California Press; October 2013) is not only about the making of a field
biologist, but an eccentric mediation on natural history. Both an absorbing
autobiography and a celebration of the beauty in nature, the book explores
multiple themes including the destruction of habitat and loss of biodiversity,
the nuts and bolts of field research and teaching, how natural historians help
save species from extinction, and the sheer poetry of field biology.

Greene is professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at Cornell University
and a Stephen H. Weiss Presidential Fellow. Other publications include the
award winning book Snakes: The Evolution of Mystery in Nature. His books
promote biological diversity, ecology, behavior and conservation-the core
components of scientific literacy.

Light refreshments will be available throughout the event, and books will be
available for purchase and signing.

Mann Library is located off of Tower Road on the Cornell University Ag Quad.
