[cayugabirds-l] Finger Lakes Land Trust Spring Bird Quest -- May 24-26
Over Memorial Day weekend, Ill be leading a series of activities, collectively called the Finger Lakes Land Trust Spring Bird Quest (SBQ), to celebrate our local birds, the lands on which their lives depend, and the Land Trusts role in preserving these vital habitats. Please below for a full schedule and directions to the preserves. (Note that the Saturday walk at the McIlroy Sanctuary will begin at a new spot, not the main parking area, to highlight a recent addition to the preserve.) In addition to leading the walks, as usual Ill be counting species, and raising money via pledges to support the Land Trusts efforts in our region. In the past eight years, SBQ supporters have donated more than $28,000. I hope we can roar past the $30,000 mark this year with peoples help. Please contact me off-list if youd like to pledge. (The bird walks are free of charge, but donations on the spot are welcome too.) Thank you for your consideration. And if you care to join me in birding, counting, and raising pledges, please do!! Contact me or the Land Trusts Edie Jodz (ediej...@fllt.org) for more details. I hope to see many of you out on the trails this month, and especially during the SBQ! Re: [cayugabirds-l] Female RWBB
Ann Raffetto's Red-winged Blackbird in East Varick on 15 Feb was the first in the basin this year of which I was aware. I think I saw it in eBird because of the Great Backyard Bird Count. I don't know if Project Feederwatch records are searchable for this purpose. Now that I know the bird was there a week earlier, I'll have to revise. That may have been a bird which overwintered in the area and found her feeding station then. My personal first of the species was on 9 March, which probably represents an influx. Generally males Red-winged Blackbirds arrive first to establish ownership of territories, and the females arrive a couple weeks later to choose a territory (and thus a male). We see warbler females migrating a bit after males as well, but the more pronounced separate migration as well as different size coloration add to the impression of female Red-winged Blackbirds being a different species. It may be that lower places, which melt sooner, and marshy habitats are taken first, which may explain why your upland place in Ulysses was late to see them. The basin first arrivals list, which I'm a few days behind updating, is here: http://www.cayugabirdclub.org/Resources/cayuga-lake-basin-first-records --Dave Nutter On May 05, 2014, at 08:57 PM, Ann Raffetto rass...@rochester.rr.com wrote: We participate in Project FeederWatch and we had a female RWBL on our 2/8 and 2/15 counts in East Varick, about 20 miles north of T-burg. [cayugabirds-l] Orioles
Monday, May 5th. about 3 p.m. as I looked out the window, there on the suet cake in its cage, stood a male Baltimore Oriole. He was standing on the top of the cage which had a new block of suet in it. He was eating the suet. He flew off and at 4 p.m. as I sat in front of the porch the female Oriole lit on a ,very near ,branch of the maple tree right in front of me. She was soon joined by the male. They stayed awhile then flew around the house. Just beautiful. [cayugabirds-l] Salt Pt Orchard Orioles
Hi everyone, Well, the light didn't cooperate with my planned trip to Montezuma this morning, so instead I sidetracked to Salt Pt in Lansing. What a great place that spot is! The highlight was two male Orchard Orioles singing and engaging in territorial altercations in trees just a little way down the gated dirt road (has big concrete barriers). Bob McGuire was there earlier than I was, and he reports seeing a male chasing a female. One of the trees in which one male spent a considerable time singing and feeding on the cottonwood catkins had the remains of an old oriole nest. I wonder if this is where the Orchard Orioles nested before? (Some photos to come…) Other delights included: Four Buffleheads, a male with three females. Three Horned Grebes Two Common Loons (And a partridge in a…oh no sorry, wrong life…) Heard one of the loons calling at one point A very vocal Osprey carrying a large fish Belted Kingfisher Warbling Vireos singing everywhere Blue-gray Gnatcatcher Baltimore Oriole Gray Catbird Common and Hooded Mergansers Eastern Bluebird feeding on sumac Plus the usual suspects And over in Myers Park, I became captivated with the scores of swallows (mostly Tree and Barn) foraging by skimming low over the water, on what had by now become a cool overcast morning. Tried some still images and video of this cool behavior. A nice morning jaunt… Marie Marie Read Wildlife Photography 452 Ringwood Road Freeville NY 13068 USA Phone 607-539-6608 e-mail m...@cornell.edu http://www.marieread.com Author of Sierra Wings: Birds of the Mono Lake BasinAvailable here: http://marieread.photoshelter.com/gallery/Sierra-Wings-Birds-of-the-Mono-Lake-Basin/GNlCxX37uTzE -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[cayugabirds-l] Catbirds and suet
Had our first of year CATBIRD and YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER. The catbird went to our suet feeder, but couldn't figure out how to get to the suet. We cut only the top off the package and hang it upside down inside the rest of the package to make it more difficult for starlings to feed. Yesterday we hung a Wildbird's bark butter feeder (bought for Sara Jane's birthday) near the suet feeder. After a few failed attempts with the suet feeder, the catbird noticed the bark butter feeder and began taking pieces off it. It's been back a couple times. We have never seen catbirds feed on suet. [cayugabirds-l] Young Bald Eagle and local bird interactions
Hi all, Just now a young Bald Eagle (3 rd year possibly), passed my window. As soon as it was over USDA building a crow came to attack it. Then when I was watching through the binoculars as it passed over arboretum, the crow continued harassing and it was joined by a swallow and thirdly a Red-tailed, which was flying over the eagle dive bombed it. The eagle continued in its presumably migratory journey of north-east! [cayugabirds-l] Eastern Kingbird and Green Heron
Up her in the hills at the SW corner of the basin we are usually a week or two behind the lake microclimate areas in bird arrivals. We were surprised this noon to find both an EAKI and a BEKI over two of the sanctuary ponds. This morning a Nashville, NAWA, was right on time on the 29 year norm here. Most others have been running as much as two weeks behind norm. Earlier some were concerned about female RWBLs. They'll be along as the older males travel first and together followed by the SY males and then the females as much as two to three weeks later. By that time lots of teritorial battles have been fought and won or lost so the males can spend more time finding that perfect mate. Re: [cayugabirds-l] other osprey nest at Cass?
Yes, I have been watching progress for a couple days as my one son has played several baseball games down there recently. One Osprey was carrying huge sticks to the nest on Saturday, including dropping a couple by accident beside the field where they kids were playing (wish they were wearing batting helmets while out in the outfield!!). Osprey also observed copulating that day on the nest. Last night (Monday) one bird was on nest while second brought in two different fish. Once, as bird approached with a fish, a gull chased after the fish carrier and chased it all the way to West Hill (I say, all the way but that is only a couple hundred yards as the Osprey flies. [cayugabirds-l] Belated post re probable Yellow-bellied Flycatcher
At about 1230pm at the NW corner of the SSW pond, in a tree where I have seen Least Flycatchers in the spring several times, I had what I assumed at first was this year’s FOY (for me) of same (knowing others already have reported one at SSW). However, from a rather close distance and with 10x binocs in good light, what I actually saw had a quite yellow front side (throat, belly, underside) and a yellow-olive back side and the eye ring was also yellowish. It was definitely a smallish flycatcher; no vocalizations. I think therefore that it was a YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER. Sorry for not posting sooner but I wanted to review images of Least to see if they tend to occasionally show more yellow than the plain buff I am used to seeing. I can’t find any evidence they do, but stand to be corrected. I was pleased to also find 2 NORTHERN WATERTHRUSHes calling (‘chick’) but not singing from either side of the trail just where it bends at the Fuller boardwalk. These were not my FOYs, but I’ve not seen them in this marshy area before. One hopped up for good looks while the other hid behind the huge willow tree there. At home this afternoon, I did get my FOY NASHVILLE WARBLER (nice to get one for the home team as the first of year) as well as my SOYY (second of year yard) YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER(s). Then Martha came out and while we were looking at our first of year Female (no less, and unaccompanied) ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, she also spotted a yellow breasted tail pumper in a hemlock which indeed was a PALM WARBLER. Our resident YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER has discovered to his delight that the metal eave trough just above the bedroom window makes a resounding and satisfying racket when pecked vigorously at 530 am. for 15 mins at least. [cayugabirds-l] Northern Parula at Sapsucker Woods
Saw a nice variety of warblers at Sapsucker Woods this evening, including a beautiful Northern Parula, FOY for us. There were also plenty of Yellow, Palm, and Yellow-rumped warblers, one Black-and-white, an American Redstart, and at the Sherwood Platform, a Common Yellowthroat. [cayugabirds-l] Montezuma Wetlands Area Today 5/6/14
Birded from sunrise to sunset today. My goal was to see shorebirds, the ibis and anything else up around Montezuma. However, I totaled up my species count today and was surprised that I had 111 species!!! I spent little time in woodland habitat except for brief times driving through the woods at Carncross Rd, Howland Island, Van Dyne Sporer rd and listening from my car. In the Montezuma wetlands complex I had 100 species. In the Cayuga Basin, I totaled 107 species for today. My first stop was Carncross Road Montezuma Wetlands Complex with the hope of getting the GLOSSY IBIS. Thanks to all who have posted on this bird as it was exactly where it has been the last few days...just north of the bridge on Carncross Rd. I got great views and met up with Doug Daniels. https://www.flickr.com/photos/davenicosia/14123526842/in/photostream/ In addition at Carncross, there was 1 adult breeding plumage BONAPARTE'S GULLS, a lot of CASPIAN TERNS, DUNLIN, both species of YELLOWLEGS and KILLDEER. I also heard a SOLITARY SANDPIPER. The shorebird diversity is still down. Aside from the KILLDEER did not find any other plovers today. Howland Island had one singing CERULEAN WARBLER among others including FOY (for me) WOOD THRUSH, and GREAT-CRESTED FLYCATCHER. Marten's Tract was awesome. Saw 1 AMERICAN BITTERN and heard another. Also SORA, VIRGINIA RAIL, many COMMON GALLINULES, CASPIAN TERNS. Heard a BARRED OWL as well. Van Dyne Sporer road was full of waders. The lighting was awful and the shimmer was bad but I did manage to see a GREAT EGRET that Doug Daniels found earlier. There were also many CASPIAN TERNS, and a few HERRING GULLS. There were loads of DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS, GREAT BLUE HERONS, PIED BILLED GREBES, quite a few COMMON GALLINULES, AMERICAN COOT and 5 RUDDY DUCKS including 3 gorgeous breeding males. Wildlife drive had some lingering waterfowl many RING-NECKED DUCKS, 4 REDHEADS and 1 CANVASBACK. Tschache Pool had 4 BLACK TERNS, loads of BUFFLEHEAD, several GADWALL, GREEN-WINGED TEAL, RING-NECKED DUCKS and others. May's Point was quiet but did have 2 flyby BLACK TERNS. These birds flew over toward wildlife drive. Probably same birds from Tschache pool?? East Road had 70+ NORTHERN SHOVELERS, 19 RUDDY DUCKS and 1 WILSON'S SNIPE among others. Re: [cayugabirds-l] Belated post re probable Yellow-bellied Flycatcher
I understand that the level of contrast on the throat and face is more important than the shade of color of the underparts. Yellow-bellied Flycatcher's throat blends, but other Empids have a distinct throat even when they look yellowish below. That said, I'm no expert, but I'd love to see the photos and hear what others think of them as well. This evening around 5:15 I saw an Empidonax which I believe was a Least along the Wilson Trail a short distance north of the Sherwood Platform, It was typical grayish-green above, pale grayish below, had a substantial but not overly-emphasized eye-ring, whitish double wing bars, and gave a quick whit call. I was looking up at it against the sky through branches, but my bird seems different from Chris'. --Dave Nutter From: Chris R. Pelkie chris.pel...@cornell.edu Date: May 06, 2014 7:16:35 PM To: CAYUGABIRDS-L cayugabird...@list.cornell.edu Subject: [cayugabirds-l] Belated post re probable Yellow-bellied Flycatcher At about 1230pm at the NW corner of the SSW pond, in a tree where I have seen Least Flycatchers in the spring several times, I had what I assumed at first was this year’s FOY (for me) of same (knowing others already have reported one at SSW). -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
