Greetings. This is the Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert for the week of 

October 27, 2014

Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC)






     Shorebird numbers were definitely down this week. Only nine species were 
noted. They were: SANDERLING, WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER, 
PECTORAL SANDPIPER, LEAST SANDPIPER, GREATER and LESSER YELLOWLEGS, DUNLIN and 
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER.

     10/29: 49 SANDHILL CRANES were counted at Knox-Marsellus Marsh. An EARED 
GREBE was again seen along the Wildlife Drive.

     10/30: 3 ROSS’S GEESE were noted at Knox-Marsellus Marsh. 2 IBIS (species 
not yet determined) were seen at Eaton Marsh on the Wildlife Drive.

     10/31: The EARED GREBE was again seen along the Wildlife Drive but has not 
been reported since.

     11/2: The two INIS were again seen at Eaton Marsh. Up to 60 SANDHILL 
CRANES were seen at Knox-Marsellus Marsh. Nearly that number were noted today 
also.







Oswego County






     10/30: A CACKLING GOOSE was seen on Chesboro Road west of Central Square.

     11/1: 2 GOLDEN EAGLES were seen from Bishop Road north of Pulaski.

     11/2: A very rare for Region 5 WHITE-EYED VIREO made a brief appearance in 
the bushes at Derby Hill. There have been no reports since.







Onondaga County






     11/1: A CACKLING GOOSE was seen at Beaver Lake Nature Center. 2 PEREGRINE 
FALCONS were seen atop the Syracuse Savings Bank in downtown Syracuse.







Cayuga County






     11/3: 2 PURPLE SANDPIPERS were found along the break wall at Fair Haven 
State Park in their usual spot on the south side and at the end. They remained 
and were seen into late afternoon.
