[cayugabirds-l] West Hill crow roost?

2014-12-31 Thread Dave Nutter
On my bike ride to Stewart Park yesterday about 3pm I noticed about a hundred
high-flying CROWS coming from the North Campus/Cayuga Heights area and headed
WEST over the valley presumably to roost, but I don't know where. It's worth
keeping an eye out for them on the count tomorrow.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] West Hill crow roost?-or not

2014-12-31 Thread Anne Clark
They may have returned to North Campus to roost at the end.

At 430-45 pm, there was a steady stream of crows coming E across the living
units on Jessup Road and filling the woods of the Cornell Golf Course between
Hasbrouck Community and Mockley House, as well as the trees on the S border of
A-Lot. My rough counts of partly seen trees and sky-flow suggested 6-8
thousand. They swirled around for a bit until after 5pm, the dense treetop
groups in woods E of Hasbrouck slowly erupting upward again and moving W back
across Pleasant Grove Rd into both deciduous and coniferous trees in the campus
and residential area bounded by Pleasant Grove, Jessup, Dearborn, Kelvin, Wait
and Thurston. Birds were still decorating trees along A-lot, but were NOT
going into Jessup Woods proper. In other words, they stayed in somewhat lit
areas near buildings.

I left around 520pm and it was pretty dark. No birds were moving very far west
or south at that point, only swirling up and turning back into North Campus
trees.

Two of our 5 radioed crows were among them, based on radio signals, but I never
saw a tagged bird---too diluted by untagged birds!

So---late counters in Jessup Road area might get the best count. And if people
do record large flocks of crows, be sure to record the time and direction of
movement...that way we can probably put the observations together for an
accurate count.

my 2 cents!

Anne

[cayugabirds-l] Snowy Owl at Hancock Airport

2014-12-31 Thread Paul Schmitt
I have a friend who is returning to France in a few months and would love to
see a Snowy before leaving. Have there been any more sightings at Hancock
Field since December 26?

Appreciate any update.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Snowy Owl at Hancock Airport

2014-12-31 Thread gmail
I took an unsuccessful lap around near sunset today, but I am decidedly
amateurish at this.
On that note, I come from a background of photography ( but have a healthy
desire to not disturb the wildlife). This list serve is great, but as someone
who lives just east of Syracuse, it's not actionable given driving distances
most days. I'd love to find a place nearby that i could visit with camera on a
regular basis with a reasonable expectation of seeing something interesting.
Does anyone have any suggestions, or know of a similar list for Onondaga
county? The creek walk by the mall is ok but I've heard enough stories to be a
little wary of taking high dollar camera equipment there regularly.
Thanks!

[cayugabirds-l] Shorteared Owls in Ovid

2014-12-31 Thread Marty Schlabach
Mary Jean, Phil and I went looking for Shorteared Owls this evening in Covert,
Lodi and Ovid. Left home about 4:30pm, drove west from rt 96 on Kellys Corners
Rd, then north on Keady Rd to Wycoff Rd. Headed west on Wycoff toward rt 96A
and then returned east on Wycoff Rd to the intersection of Wycoff and Rock
River Rd. The only bird activity of interest up to that point was a small
flock of Horned Larks.

We saw our first shorteared owl from Wycoff Rd northeast of the intersection
about 5:05pm, perched on the rack of a hay wagon well back from both roads. We
then moved to Rock River Rd, hoping for a better look. It was comparably
distant from the road, not really a better or closer view. We watched it for 5
minutes or so and then saw two shortears in flight against the clear and
somewhat brighter sky northwest of the intersection. We later saw two in
flight this time to the east. We last saw them about 5:20pm. The most we saw
at one time were 3 shorteared owls.

Good birding!

Marty
