Normal level of Cayuga Lake is 382 ft. but on Mon. I read that it was at
384 ft.. The underside of the docks here at Frontenac Park have been
used for yrs. by the rough-wings for nesting. I watched several swallows
sitting on, or flying over the docks on Mon. a.m.. Perhaps they were the
males with the females caught in the nests as the water rose & no way to
escape since the water was several inches above the bottom of the docks.
On Tues. the level was even higher.

The N. rough-wings also nest in the cinder block holes of the park
bathhouse.

We're once again enjoying the "flying cigars" ... chimney swifts flying
over the Union Springs Academy grounds.

I was at RH Treman SP Sunday afternoon watching a northern rough-winged
swallow fly in and out of one of the holes in the stone wall holding up
the changing room plateau, just downstream from the swimming area. Last
year there was an occupied hole high in the wall, just a few feet from
the top (10 feet above water level?). This year's hole was much lower,
probably five feet above water level. Based on some of the flash flood
footage from youtube, it's very likely this nest hole got inundated.

With a rise of a couple of inches in the lake level at this site, the
Northern Rough-Winged Swallow has decided that, after all, she would
prefer to nest under the UPPER section of the dock!
