[cayugabirds-l] Blue Jays Migrating

As my computer was booting up, from above the screen I could see Blue Jays 
Flying overhead. I started to count and counted 32 of them. They have very 
characteristic flights can't be mistaken for anything else. While the Blue Jays 
were heading south a flock of a dozen of Cedar Waxwings flew directly north.
Yesterday also I saw quite a few flocks of Blue Jays heading south.

[cayugabirds-l] Mill pond path ... Union Springs

Today I walked along the new "path" along the south side of Mill pond. 
Needless to say, it left me feeling angry that the scout's mother, who 
admitted to me that she knew next to nothing about birds & their needs, 
pushed through their (her) agenda of making the path, DESPITE all the 
letters you caring, knowledgeable birders wrote. Letters that were 
polite, filled with suggests & reasons why the path should not be there.

This was a mother pushing her shy son into something she thought he/they 
could do so he could become an Eagle Scout. I understand ...  it's hard 
to find projects that would earn a merit badge. (The roofless, gazebo 
with no seats was one.)

  I don't know who on the village board gave the final approval or if 
liability has been considered. I do know that the former mayor who 
recently resigned, was ready to give immediate approval at that 1st 
meeting after only the _barest_ of plans were presented. Indeed, there 
were no _real_ plans presented at the meeting I attended. It was _just a 
proposal_ with the boy to give more thorough plans at a future date as 
to what part the village would play & what the boy was to do. Oh, & he 
proposed erecting a sign about the birds that stop there.

So folks, today I did a slow boil as I walked the rough path which still 
needs a LOT of clearing, leveling, digging out stumps & putting in wood 
chips. The path is as close as 5' from the water (with no bushes to hide 
walkers) & as far as 20'. Beware, in places there is poison ivy 
underfoot & along the path. A beaver has dropped a tree into the water. 
I was happy to see a catbird in bushes between me & the water. ALL the 
ducks were at the NE area of the pond. Not unusual but what will it be 
like when the pond is full? Futile question.

Thank you all who tried, as did I, to keep the pond edge & the pond as a 
safe haven & home for "our" birds.

Thanks for the update, Fritzie.  I am sad to hear this news, and I wonder
if any former scouts or scout leaders on this list would be willing to
speak up and speak to the scout master who issues the merit.  I would think
a merit is earned in such a way that respects the democratic process and
seeks to meet the needs of a greater goodseeking a win-win solution.
Sounds like local politics at play.  Perhaps former scouts on this list
could approach the scout master and ask him(?) if he would be willing to
withhold the merit until a solution has been foundand some of us need
to meet to help find a win-win solution.  Did we dropped the ball by only
writing letters and not seeing this all the way through???  It sound like
at this point things could be allowed to grow back???  I am willing to help.

[cayugabirds-l] warblers in Brooktondale

We just had a wave of warblers come through.  I saw several Nashville, at
least two Magnolia and a Common Yellowthroat as well as a RC Kinglet
between downpours.

[cayugabirds-l] Hurricane Joaquin

Just a heads-up…

I happened to check some of my weather references for the coming week and 
noticed that Tropical Storm Joaquin, currently just East of the Bahamas, is 
forecast to make landfall around the Delmarva Peninsula or Cape May, NJ areas 
as a Category 2 Hurricane (976mb) around 8am Sunday morning (10/4). This system 
will then weaken to a Category 1 Hurricane (992mb) as it moves North through 
central New York, just East of the Finger Lakes Region, on Monday morning 
(10/5) through midnight Monday night and gradually drifting Northeast through 
Tuesday and departing by Wednesday morning (10/7).

Be prepared and have a watchful eye for unexpected and typically pelagic 
seabirds on sizable lakes anytime Monday through Wednesday (10/5-10/7) and on 
the days following the departure of this system from our area, as birds filter 
from Lake Ontario back toward the ocean (10/7-10/9).

The only caveat with this alert is that this is a forecast, and forecasts 
change – especially forecasts greater than a few days out. So, everything 
mentioned above is purely meant as a heads-up to check your favorite weather 
forecast site for more information as Tropical Storm Joaquin develops into a 
Hurricane and heads our way.

[cayugabirds-l] Hudsonian Godwit, Montezuma

Jackie and Larue report that the HUDSONIAN GODWIT was in the north end of
Eaton Marsh on the Wildlife Drive again this morning, along with a variety
of other expected shorebirds and good numbers of waterfowl out on the Main
Pool.
