[cayugabirds-l] Addition to Mark's Cornell Community Garden Report
I want to add that we also saw a huge kettle of Turkey Vultures in the Stevenson Road direction. When we first looked, I saw about ten or so. As I left the group, I counted at least 50, so hard to count, as there were so many flying in a tight circle and relatively small diameter and a handful flying away from the vortex in all four directions. It could have been as many as 75. Today, from Fall Creek, looking directly upward into the gorgeous blue sky with thin clouds, I was amazed at how many gulls I saw soaring up with the thermals, so high I almost could not see them. I estimate there were ten or more at the highest level (almost cloud level) and several others lower down. They just seemed to keep going higher and higher. -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] Meena's report re: TVs migrating
Daughter, Becky & I went to Upper Saranac Lake on Thurs.. North of Oswego on Rte. 3, for at least 20 mi. we saw perhaps 200 TVs migrating on either side of the road. We didn't try to count but neither of us had ever seen so many. The sky seemed to be full, far as we looked. We saw none at Derby Hill, though. Saw only a few RB gulls there. Wind was fierce from the north all day. The Adirondacks was rather devoid of feathers ... a few crows, juncos & blue jays but only one each of loon, song sparrow, bald eagle & ring neck duck. Not one TV. Tree color was mostly green & nowhere near peak color except as we traveled between Speculator & Hinckley Reservoir yesterday on our way home. If I hadn't seen a recent post about how LOW the water is there, I would have been shocked beyond what I was. Hinckley has always been a favorite stopping spot for us. No more. The beauty is only a memory. Sad that the waters have been drawn down so far. We usually could depend on seeing loons there. Saw only a lone, scrawny RB gull. Here at home this evening, bluebirds & a downy were checking out my bird boxes. They both roost in the boxes in fall & winter. Today we saw 2 flocks of Canadas flying very high, heading north!!
