[cayugabirds-l] Some birds on today's hike and Sawwhet owl info
Hi all, I did a 9.5 mile Monkey Run north and south loop hike with some friends. The highlights were - I heard at least three or four Pine Siskins in the white pines on the North Monkey Run hike about a mile from Rt 13 Bridge end. I also saw and heard several Brown Creepers, a Golden-crowned Kinglet and a beautiful display of a male and female Downy woodpeckers. Their calls were very unusual. I wish I had my recorder with me. Other than that there were some usual birds, plus a pair of Red-tailed hawks were displaying with their swinging flights over the Cornell fields near Freese road . I was talking to Cindy, one of the co hikers. She told me that she has been hearing some digital alarm clock early in the mornings between 4.30 and 5.30 am for last few days and that has been waking her up. She whistled the call to me. So I played her the sound of Sawwhet owl and she said that was it!. She said she has lots of spruces and pines around her house on Hanshaw road. I will give the exact location for those who want to try to listen quietly without playing the playback as I do not want the whole neighborhood to be woken up by lots of people playing calls. E-mail me if you are interested. [cayugabirds-l] Texas Hollow Highlights
I spent four hours hiking the Texas Hollow Finger Lakes Trail with a friend. I know this is outside of the Cayuga Basin, but I hope it's OK to post anyway. Here are the highlights: Driving 227 to Perry City I know this is probably way too early for swallows, but I could have sworn I saw a Barn Swallow swoop down into a marshy ditch and then up again out to through the corn field. I saw pointy forked tail and flash of rusty brown chest and white belly. On the way back, in almost the same area, I saw one lone male Horned Lark in the corn field. On the way to TX Hollow, I saw a large raptor circle around and dive-bomb down. The behavior reminded me of the territorial behavior of a Golden Eagle, but it was too far away and backlit for me to verify. Throughout the hike, I heard high-pitched "sip-sip" sounds high in the scotch pine and hemlock tree tops, wherever evergreen clusters were found. I am pretty sure it was a Golden-crowned Kinglet, so that is a first for me! I saw a large black eye and black stripe on the crown, but no color showing. Lastly, I think I heard a Red-breasted Nuthatch, which would be another first if it was indeed one. It sounded similar to the White-breasted Nuthatch but different and almost matched the Lab of O recording. -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] Western tanager present at 10:30am, Cornell Campus
The Western Tanager was flitting around eating fruits from all the trees around the small Glen near Day Hall and the Campus store. We were there from ~10am to 10:30am. During that time many more birders came around and the friendly bird seemed to want to visit every group in turn right up close, to within a few feet. A flock of Cedar Waxwings came in for the fruit too , but the Tanager seemed happy to share with them. After we took a walk around Campus & Johnson Museum we walked back through the glen at about 12:30pm and did not see the bird or any birders. We did not look too carefully everywhere, so we hope it's still around. [cayugabirds-l] presumed osprey sighting
I am not clear about this third hand report, but my source said an osprey was sighted last week near Rice Road in Trumansburg. The source either misidentified another hawk species or its a premature arrival for the osprey. They usually don't start appearing in our area until the last ten days of March and later. Anything is possible, especially these days.. Re: [cayugabirds-l] Eurasian Wigeon at Frontenac Park still
Hi all, A bit more info since our initial report was brief. Eric Gulson and I were leading the ornithology field trip, and we had several other birders with us, Menachem Goldstein, Logan Kahle, Sarah Toner, and Max Kirsch. There were a couple of birders at Frontenac already (whose names I don't know), who noted the abundance of ducks and told us that there were some wigeon mixed in with the Redheads in the middle of the flock directly between the island and the harbor. They left, and we began scanning. It didn't take long before Max called out a EURASIAN WIGEON in the densest part of the Redhead raft, along with ~20 American Wigeon. The Eurasian Wigeon was initially difficult to get on since it blended in so well with the Redheads and simply because the birds were very concentrated. But after a couple of minutes, all of us got on it and acquired good looks. We noted the small, circular head shape as opposed to the irregular Aythya head shape of the Redheads, as well as the white wing patch, lack of a black breast, overall smaller size, and lower profile in the water that further separated it from the Redheads. The creamy-tan frontal shield, rust-red colored head, and gray flanks separated it from the other wigeon. No photos, but seen well by all. [cayugabirds-l] Red-tail nesting?
Driving home an hour or so ago, I was nearing the junction of Baker Hill and Mt Pleasant roads when I saw a Red-tailed Hawk circling over some tall conifers carrying a stick in its talons. Suddenly it swooped down and disappeared presumably into one of the trees, but I couldn't relocate it. Cool!
