[cayugabirds-l] Raven forager--Freese x Hanshaw fields

2016-04-17 Thread AB Clark
I encountered a Common Raven alighting and foraging in the wettest spot in the
NE corner of the field at Freese x Hanshaw (a spot just SW of the corner
signs). The nearest pair of crows was quite upset at this, diving at it, but it
didn’t even look at them while landing.

It captured something quite frog-like, used its feet in some way to carry it
up and transfer the prey to its bill, and flew off East down Hanshaw. It got
out of sight before I could see where it went beyond old Ludgate Farms. Quite
possibly the same one/pair that I have encountered foraging along Hanshaw just
a bit north of 13. But after that, where??? Could there be a raven nest
fairly close to Sapsucker Woods?

Also, for those keeping track of raptors: a) for the 3rd time since Thursday,
a Broadwing Hawk was circling overhead in the vicinity of the DeWitt Middle
School playing fields; b) a Merlin pair is back on Christopher Lane area since
early last week and as of today, appears to have successfully harrased our
oldest female crow (19 years old) off her nest and established their access to
the nest.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Broad-winged Hawk

2016-04-17 Thread Geo Kloppel
Yes, Derby Hill has seen very few Broad-wings yet, unless they got a pulse
today. But my guy is definitely back, even swooping into the woods overlooking
Maple Ave, where the nests from previous years are located. He's in the
vanguard every year!

What a racket the Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers are making this afternoon!

[cayugabirds-l] Broad-winged Hawk

2016-04-17 Thread Geo Kloppel
I believe my local Broad-winged Hawk has returned today. For several hours it
has been circling high and low over the traditional nest area on my property
and vocalizing.

[cayugabirds-l] New birds

2016-04-17 Thread Carol Keeler
Here in Auburn some new migrants are coming my way, finally. This morning I had
a pair of Purple Finches. This is the earliest they've shown up here. They
didn't stay long, unfortunately. I also had a Chipping Sparrow show up. They
usually nest in my yard. Finally there was a White Throated Sparrow. My Tree
Sparrows seem to have moved on, but I still have lots of Juncos.

I moved my feeders from their winter spot out front to the back of the house.
The birds relocated them very quickly.

[cayugabirds-l] Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Hermit Thrush

2016-04-17 Thread W. Larry Hymes
Know others have already seen them, but I was very excited to find 3
RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS flitting about and vocalizing up in our scotch
pine. Saw them at 8:00am. Perhaps they dropped in after migrating over
night. We also had a HERMIT THRUSH show up yesterday evening. It was
very vigorously scratching about under our neighbor's shrubs. Another
first of year for us!
