[cayugabirds-l] Clay-colored Sparrow returns to Cornell

2016-05-06 Thread Gary Kohlenberg
Andrew Dreelin found the Cornell Arts Quad Clay-colored Sparrow this morning in
the same area as last year. The flowering trees on the south side of Goldwin
Smith Hall and associated walking paths. Chasing Chipping Sparrows with loving
intentions possibly. Active late this afternoon even with the rain.
I'm very happy to have him back.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] eBird Report - Lindsay-Parsons Biodiversity Preserve (FLLT), May 6, 2016

2016-05-06 Thread Geo Kloppel
Hi Laura,

I was at Lindsay-Parsons today too. Can't add much to your list: Hermit Thrush,
Blue-headed Vireo, Blackburnian Warbler and Louisiana Waterthrush. No
Worm-eating yet. From the looks of things, it may be a couple of days yet.

One thing that interested me was a very vocal Yellow-throated Vireo up on the
shoulder of the north pinnacle. From that height I have often heard this
species singing far down below, westward toward the RR and the Inlet where it
regularly breeds. I wondered if my bird this morning had just arrived, or if he
was a territorial claimant, exuberantly advertising from the highest possible
perch...

[cayugabirds-l] eBird Report - Lindsay-Parsons Biodiversity Preserve (FLLT), May 6, 2016

2016-05-06 Thread Laura Stenzler
My daughter and I took a stroll around the Lindsay-Parsons Biodiveristy
Preserve this morning, starting near the firehouse on Sylvan Drive, then along
the Blue trail on the east side of 34/90. The woods were actually very quiet,
but the fields and shrubs were hopping. The ebird report is below.
In our yard this morning were Ovenbird and Catbird - FOY.

[cayugabirds-l] Incubating Dryden Merlin - fairly photogenic

2016-05-06 Thread John Confer
I watched this nest in the evening of 5 May and the female was not incubating.
This morning, 6 May, she was. When she came into the nest and sat down on it,
she was totally invisible: big, deep nest with a angle of vision that looks up.
Once incubation starts, I think the Merlins don't care at all about minor
disturbance due to human presence.

Male brought in Red-winged Blackbird at 8:30. He called, ate part of it in
spruce snag, flew by nest with remains, landed in alternative plucking tree,
called again, flew by nest back to spruce snag and dropped prey. Female got off
the nest and flew to spruce snag, and after 5 minutes she went back to nest. My
interpretation is that male had already brought breakfast for her, usually
around 7:00, and that this was his breakfast that he offered to share but she
wasn't interested. Nice guy, huh.

In Dryden, at intersection of Mill St and Recreation Trail:

Plucking perches:

1. dead spruce snag on Mill St. near auto bridge over creek and

2. across old railroad bridge now Recreatinal Trail foot bridge going westward
about 30 m past end of bridge on south side of trail.

Nest:

In second of two spruce on north side of trail and west end of bridge, between
two favored plucking perches. Doesn't look like much.

Hi all,

A singing MARSH WREN was found a little while ago by several Lab employees.
It was singing and foraging at the end of the Sherwood Platform. You can
hear some recordings here:
