[cayugabirds-l] Stewart Park goose study
Many of the Canada Geese at Stewart Park have recently been banded. The young were given a red band on one leg and a standard aluminum band on the other. One of these young is dragging an injured wing. Up to 200 adults were given yellow neck collars each with a unique black 2-letter, 2-number code. All appear to start with either NY or NU. I've seen 162 different collars so far. This is evidently part of the study of the local goose population, their number, where they go, and maybe some demographics. It has to do with the push to get rid of the geese which was talked about at a recent club meeting. Meanwhile the collars add another dimension to what was already a wonderful study opportunity. Not only can you observe behavior up close throughout the year, now you can get to know individual birds and some of the geese they spend time with. Some pairs have both members collared, and some of these pairs have young while others seem not to, but I imagine there could have been many young losing track of their parents during the massive round-up and banding & collaring operation. Today the collared geese and banded young (with many non-collared adults) appeared to be all in the part of Stewart Park and Newman Golf Course closest to Fall Creek. The only other geese I saw today were a group of 35 adults (none with collars, no young) on Cayuga Inlet by the south end of the bike path along Floral Avenue, and a single non-collared adult on Cayuga Lake near East Shore Park. --Dave Nutter -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] East Rd. Purple martins?????
The Mennonite couple who lived in the house that burnt on East Rd. put up a Purple martin house several years before they moved away about two yrs. ago. The box had been occupied by martins almost from the time the box was put up & I saw martins there last yr.. I don't recall anyone ever having posted to the list about seeing martins. I didn't just because I didn't have the time. Last I knew, the box was still there, out by the garage. This is just a heads up for others to keep an eye out for martins & not "just swallows." Becky & I missed the stilt yesterday at Know-Marcellus but found more new osprey nests & the starts of 3 others on our travels. We saw 5 ospreys on poles north of the Van Dyne Spoor Rd. platform which we think are the parents & 3 offspring. After you cross the RR tracks, just past Wright Rd., an unmarked road bears off to the left from Van Dyne Spoor & a new kiosk has been placed there but no information is yet on it. That road parallels VDS Rd. & at the end are 2 newly placed picnic tables, a pit grill & a lovely nature mural has been painted on the old bridge abutment. From that spot you can look north & see the Morgan Rd. facility. Hope I'm not turned around on directions : N, E, S, W The woods are close along the road & seem to be very birdy. I chose to not drive beyond the picnic area, esp. since that area had had enough rain Mon. night to make puddles so I suggest the road beyond be walked. We did see "No Trespassing" signs in the woods. Becky heard a lot of birds singing in the woods. For those looking for food, pizza, salads, ice cream, drinks, pit stop, gasoline, etc. a new Byrne Dairy has opened in Magee on the corner of Rtes. 318 & 414. We had very good "subs" made of bread .. sub rolls aren't used. Food & prices were better than the Day & Night gas station on 5 & 20 at Rte. 90 east of the refuge entrance. Re: [cayugabirds-l] Stilt
You aren't alone there! And you left the apostrophe ('s) off else. So .. why try? We all knew what you meant! Chuckled to see your post. Our neighbor is also Judy Wright but she's handicapped so WE KNOW she can't go birding. Fritzie . [cayugabirds-l] Jetty Woods Highlights
Sorry to hear that the merlin nests did not do well this year. Today, I was happy to see a baby oriole pop its head then full body launched out suddenly and perch on the top of the nest ..or possibly its sibling's head? The nest is extremely well concealed. I only noticed because mom and dad had been feeding them. The nestling flicked its wings and preened a bit, looked around for the longest time, then returned deep into its nest, which silenced the squawking sibling. The nest is hanging well hidden over the gravel road that goes to Jetty Woods, near the utility building I am also seeing baby robins everywhere, saw a baby song sparrow trying to sing and sounding hoarse, and hearing the wren nest next door go crazy ever 15 minutes. Momma Wood Duck and her five ducklings paddled around the light house, goslings are looking huge! Is this the second round of hatchlings? The wild flowers blooming on and around the base of the jetty are absolutely stunning and magnificent right now. Other highlights: Eastern Kingbird, Yellow Warbler, American Redstart, Catbirds, Osprey with fish in air, many swallows,... -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
