[cayugabirds-l] yard loon watch

2016-11-20 Thread Dave Nutter
This morning from about dawn (6:46am) until snow commenced (7:18am) I watched
for migrating loons from the NYS-89 bridge over the Flood Control Channel near
my yard. I hoped that a lull in precipitation at take-off time might prompt
migration, and I aimed to watch without risking a car trip to Taughannock
potentially returning in snow before I got my snow tires on.

I was disappointed to see no loons during that interval, so I went back to my
yard, but continued watching other birds from the shelter of my back porch. The
light snowfall quit at some point, but I stayed continued watching from the
porch. At 7:54am I first noticed loons in flight, a high group of 4 southbound.
They may have been from Lake Ontario at that hour. I went out into the yard
where I could see a bit more sky until 8:42 when snow recommenced, and I saw a
total of 49 Common Loons. The last group of 5 was indecisive, perhaps turning
back, but nearly all of the rest were going straight and some variation on
southward. There was no consensus from group to group as to the best precise
direction. The great majority passed either overhead or to my east; only a few
were over West Hill, but the distance I can see that direction from the base of
the steep hill is limited, so perhaps I missed birds which had headed south
from Taughannock rather than following the lake to the south end. All the loons
I saw were well above tree level. I did not see any on the Inlet, but I did not
travel along the Inlet to view it from farther upstream or downstream.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Loons on the inlet

2016-11-20 Thread Ellen Haith
There were numerous loons off Elm Beach Road in Ovid this afternoon, as
well. I would guess fifteen in the largest group, mostly solitary but
several pairs which would include adults and/or juveniles.

[cayugabirds-l] Lapland Longspurs in Newfield

2016-11-20 Thread Ethan Chaffee
A pair of Lapland Longspurs are hanging out near the cornfield at the
corner of Benjamin Hill and Vanbuskirk Golf roads. Last seen on Vanbuskirk
Golf. There's also a flock of about 20 horned larks and at least 1 snow
bunting.

Thanks!
Ethan

[cayugabirds-l] Loons on the inlet

2016-11-20 Thread Charles Eldermire
At least a dozen common loons spotted chilling on the inlet as we drove through
Cass park this morning-might be a whole lot of them out on the lake too with
this weather...

[cayugabirds-l] Myers Point scoters

2016-11-20 Thread Jay McGowan
A gorgeous pair of BLACK SCOTERS are sitting on the lake off the Myers
marina, also just visible from Ladoga. Five WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS are nearby.

Ken and others report a late SCARLET TANAGER from Salt Point.

Re:[cayugabirds-l] cayugabirds-l digest: November 19, 2016

2016-11-20 Thread Anne R. Kenney
Bird flotillas on Cayuga Lake
On Saturday, before the weather changed, I could make out huge flotillas of
birds in the middle of Cayuga Lake-- at least a hundred birds in each of the
two pods I saw. I couldn't quite make out what kind of birds they were and
wonder if someone else identified them. Thanks, Anne Kenney, Lansing Station
Road, Lansing
