Greetings: This is the Syracuse Rare Bird Alert for the week of December 19,
2015.
Highlights--

Montezuma National Wildlife Complex (MNWC) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex
(MWC)
12/19: A SHORT-EARED OWL was seen from Carncross Road. A KILLDEER was seen
at Howland Island. 12/21: 2 SHORT-EARED OWLS were seen at Martens Tract.
Oswego County
12/21: A HERMIT THRUSH was seen at Rice Creek Field Station in Oswego. Two
THAYER’S GULLS were reported at Phoenix dam and lock, one adult and one
juvenile. The juvenile has been seen up to the 24th. Also seen at Phoenix were
multiple GLAUCOUS GULLS, ICELAND GULLS and LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS. These
gulls have been seen daily since the 21st. up to and including today.
12/23: 2 PEREGRINE FALCONS were again seen at the old power plant in Oswego.
Possible breeders? 12/26: ICELAND, GLAUCOUS, and LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS
were all reported at Oswego Harbor.
Onondaga County
12/21: The same gulls reported from the Oswego County section in Phoenix
were visible from the Onondaga County side of the Oswego River. It should be
noted that the county line runs through the middle of the river so this should
be taken into account when listing your birds. 12/23: 2 female RUDDY DUCKS
were seen at the end of the Onondaga Creek creek walk near Destiny Mall in
Syracuse. A FOX SPARROW was seen along the West Shore Trail of Onondaga Lake.
12/25: A ROSS’S GOOSE was seen at the confluence of the Oneida and Seneca
Rivers south of Phoenix.
Madison County
12/20: A SANDHILL CRANE was again seen on Ditchbank Road north of
Chittenango. 12/22: An ICELAND GULL was seen on Hardwood Island Road north
of Canastota.
Oneida County
12/22: A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen on Harris Road in the town of Deerfield.
