I can personally vouch for the ease with which one can (mis)identify the

This a.m. I noticed our NYSEG ospreys on Number one Rd. are back. One
was on the nest & the other on the perch pole. I suspect they have been
back a few days but I hadn't been able to walk up the hill to check.
Becky had checked the nest on Fri. evening & saw nothing but it may have
been too
My phoebe sounded out of practice, too!
Still a treat to hear it.

Asher,
Is there any chance that the bird you saw this morning might have been a
similar-looking female Purple Finch? Purple Finch is a classic early April
migrant here in the Ithaca area, whereas Rose-breasted Grosbeaks typically
arrive back here in late April or early May. This eBird map for
Phoebes apparently arrived en masse. The first one I had was right across from
the Frog Barn on Sapsucker Woods Rd, on Thursday 30 March, 12 noon. Sounded a
bit out of practice.
Then another was singing in my yard (oob) on HIle School Rd later that
afternoon.

That's right: Miller Creek joins Michigan Creek 1/2 mile south of the Spencer
Lake dam. The combined waters are afterwards named Catatonk Creek on USGS maps.
It flows south and east, gathering other waters, until it joins with Owego
Creek and empties into the Susquehanna.

Very cool bird! As far as I can tell, Miller Creek drains south, and South
Danby Road is outside the Cayuga Lake Basin. It's exciting to hear what birds
are just beyond and contemplating migrating beyond the next set of hills or
through the next saddle as they make their way north.

First Phoebe for my yard today too. And arriving yesterday, six Purple Finches:
3 roseating (purplescing?) males and 3 brown streaky basic types. These are
the first Purple Finches to visit our feeders in months. They're doing some
singing! Also have Wood Ducks visiting our pond.

Hung out for a few midday hours at Stewart Park on this beautiful sunny day.
In the morning a juvenile bald eagle was perched over the lagoon, giving good
looks to SFO groups, other birders and photographers, and passers-by alike.
Meanwhile across the way the osprey continued adding sticks to
Our pheobes showed up last Thursday, but we were headed out of town and I

This morning at our feeders on South Danby Rd, a female Rose-breasted
Grosbeak. Still not quite sure if in basin. Our drainage goes into Miller
Creek, and i'm pretty sure into Cayuga Lake.
