[cayugabirds-l] West side of lake trip - YES

2018-03-03 Thread Ken Haas
HI all,

I was out scouting the roads and we’re good to go for a half-day trip on the
west side of Cayuga Lake on Sunday, March 4. We'll look for wintering waterfowl
on the lake as well as winter field birds nearby. We'll meet by the big turtle
in the Ithaca Children's Garden at 8:00 am for carpooling and expect to return
at 12:30 pm. Wear warm layers to protect from the cold, windy conditions that I
expect and bring a snack and something to drink. Bring a scope if you have one.
If not, we’ll share ours. All are invited to join us on this trip regardless of
experience level or membership status.

[cayugabirds-l] West End Merlin

2018-03-03 Thread Nancy Cusumano
I'm pretty sure I saw the west end Merlin again this afternoon. I was
sitting at the light at Taughannock Blvd and Buffalo St, adjacent to Mickey
Roof Jeweler. The Merlin flew out of one of the trees in the vacant lot on
the inlet side, flew right across in front of my car at windsheild height,
and up over Island Fitness toward the inlet. It was so fast I only got a
look at the back and fanned tail. He was tipping and turning as they do
when flying through woods.

Very cool to see him/her.

We had 2 song sparrows yesterday too in Brooktondale. They seemed none too
pleased with the weather they arrived for.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Song Sparrow

2018-03-03 Thread Ann Mitchell
This morning I awoke to a cacophony of Red-wing Blackbirds singing. Thought I
was on Van Dyne Spoor Road. No song Sparrow yet. I also had lots of Common
Grackles yesterday.
Despite the weather, Spring is here!

Ditto here (Snyder Hill area). Our first Song Sparrow, female Red-wing. Along
with a large (20) flock of Grackles. All yesterday. Oh - and our first Woodcock
doing it’s sky dance at 6 am Thursday morning. Now, where’s the Towhee??

[cayugabirds-l] Red-necked Grebes, Dyden Lake

2018-03-03 Thread Jay McGowan
Two nonbreeding plumage RED-NECKED GREBES are currently sleeping in the
middle of Dryden Lake. Not much else aside from numerous Common Mergansers.

The compost was active earlier, with at least five Iceland Gulls, three
Lesser Black-backed Gulls, and a Great Black-backed x Herring hybrid. Last
night at Stewart Park we had at least eight Lesser, five Iceland, and a
Lesser Black-backed x Herring hybrid.
