Lesser and greater yellowlegs beginning to make their way back this way on their return journey South (Failed breeders? Females?). More of the lesser yellowlegs than greater. Also a few semipalmated sandpipers as well. Seen with Jackie Baker along Puddler's Dike during weekly Refuge Survey today (July 3rd). Caspian terns beginning to arrive in small numbers as well. In the meantime we are seeing the next generation of mallards, hooded mergs, wood ducks, coots, gallinules, pied-billed grebes and even spotted sandpipers. It's cool to see the explosion of new life even as the Yellowlegs' arrival reminds us that no Summer lasts forever. Enjoy these long days!! Pete Sar
