[cayugabirds-l] Michigan Hollow Marsh
This morning I went over to the beaver dam that controls the water level in the big Michigan Hollow sedge marsh north of Diane’s Crossing (Finger Lakes Trail). As some readers will know, the lodge became unoccupied more than a year ago, and without maintenance the dam has deteriorated. The lowered water level means far less habitat suitable for the Pied-billed Grebes and Bitterns found summering there in recent years. I was hoping to see some evidence of reoccupation by beaver, as their work formerly made a splendid mile-long impoundment, but so far, nothing. -Geo -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] Goldens
Earlier this AM we enjoyed and photographed a singing Carolina Wren here. Unusual for us to ever see them at this altitude. A bit later we watched a Raven harvesting small branches/twigs from one of our Larch trees; lining a nest? Finally as we were having lunch a flight of three Golden Eagles graced us with an airshow. [cayugabirds-l] FOY songbird nest building
This morning I had my personal FOY songbird nest! A Carolina Wren was bringing nest material to a former nest site, a nest shelf attached to the side of my home in Lansing. It made multiple trips while the mate sang. They often surprise me by how early and how late they continue nesting here (3-3-2012 earliest nest building, 9-12-2020 latest fledging date, from my personal NestWatch data). Has anyone else seen songbird nest-building activity? (I know raptors get an early start.)
