[cayugabirds-l] Upland Sandpipers?

2022-04-27 Thread Dave Nutter
I was talking to Reuben Stoltzfus today. He often calls when he suspects he has
found a new species for the Cayuga Lake Basin for the year, and he is often the
first to find an Upland Sandpiper at their traditional site, the Lott Farm
(access by permission). It’s located at the south edge of Seneca Falls, east of
NYS-414 and north of Martin Road near the Finger Lakes Regional Airport. We’re
a couple weeks overdue for Upland Sandpiper, and he hadn’t reported, and I know
he’s busy, so I asked if he had been looking. Yes, he has been looking but not
finding any. Last year he only saw 1, and eBird only has 2021 reports from
there of a singe bird from April 18-26. It’s looking like maybe that last
remaining reliable location in the Basin for breeding Upland Sandpipers may
have died out. Keep your eyes and ears open, both there and at any large
grassland area. We may only have them as migrants, if at all, from now on.
Meanwhile, although I haven’t been there, I assume the Lott Farm is still good
for lots (!) of other grassland species.

[cayugabirds-l] Grasslands Conservation program webinar

2022-04-27 Thread Nancy Cusumano
With all the discussion last year about grassland conservation, I thought I
would share info about this webinar, which is tomorrow.
Nancy

*Webinar Tomorrow on the Grasslands Conservation Reserve Program *

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farm Service Agency (FSA) in New
York state will present a webinar on the Grasslands Conservation Reserve
Program (CRP) on *Thursday, April 28th at 10 a.m.*

Grasslands CRP

is a voluntary program that contracts with agricultural producers to help
landowners and operators protect grassland, including pastureland and
certain other lands, while maintaining the areas as grazing lands. The
program emphasizes support for grazing operations, plant and animal
biodiversity, and eligible land containing shrubs and forbs under the
greatest threat of conversion. The Grasslands CRP program is a working
lands program. Working lands conservation programs help farmers to enhance
the sustainability of their operations while keeping land in production.

*New York FSA will present a webinar on this program, the cost-share
opportunities it provides, and how-to sign-up. While the webinar is free, a
pre-registration is required. The webinar will be recorded, and a link will
be sent to all that register. Please register
here: https://grassland.eventbrite.com
*

FSA will accept applications for CRP Grasslands from April 4 to May 13.
USDA updated signup options to provide great incentives for producers and
increase its conservation benefits, including reducing the impacts of
climate change. The program is competitive and will provide for annual
rental payments for land devoted to conservation purposes.

Persons with disabilities who require accommodations to participate in this
meeting should contact Lynette Wright at (315) 477-6309, or dial 7-1-1 to
access telecommunication relay services.

Thanks!

Lynnette

[cayugabirds-l] Make that two Baltimore Orioles

2022-04-27 Thread tess
There has been a male Baltimore Oriole at our feeders in SW Ovid off and
on since Sunday morning.  This morning briefly there were two. Given the
strong NW winds last night, seems less likely that a new one came in
than that there have been two birds for at least 24 hrs. There
frequently are two or three nests within 150 feet of our house but
obviously this is very early & no way to know if these intend to stay,
although at least one has been singing, in spite of the bitter weather.
