[cayugabirds-l] Buff-breasted Sandpiper
Hi All, Apologies for the late post and for not previously alerting the birding community, but I had a Buff-breasted Sandpiper in the visitor center pool at Montezuma this morning. Please see my ebird report from 10:55 am. I had caught a glimpse of the bird and had made a mental note to myself to check the books to make sure I was not being fooled by a bright juvenile Pectoral Sandpiper, but then completely forgot to follow up until Dave Nutter's report came in of the Buff-breasted at Knox Marcellus, apparently visible from East Road. In my defense, I was busily helping a mother/daughter duo who were without a scope get views through my scope of the Long-billed Dowitchers and the Ross's Goose that were present at the visitor center. Then lunch, drive home, supper to cook, exercise, get Dave Nutters report, shower, eat, submit my own ebird report, compose this email. Hopefully the bird will still be around tomorrow, although viewing conditions will be decidedly different than today's. Good luck to all. And many thanks to Dave Nutter. There is a Ross’s goose in the wetland along the entrance to Montezuma NWR. Very visible. Also, 65+ sandhill cranes visible from East Road. [cayugabirds-l] Injured screech owl in union springs
My neighbor has what she thinks is an injured screech owl south of union springs. Cornell vet school advises she capture it and bring it there, which is what she is currently planning to do probably within the hour. But if anyone has experience doing this it would be much appreciated. [cayugabirds-l] Field Trip Sunday with Ken Haas
I am happy to once again lead a walk to look for birds on the West side of Cayuga Lake. We have a new meeting spot - meet me at 8AM at the North West end of the parking lot of Allen H. Treman State Marine Park. From Rt. 89 N, turn right just before the Hanger Theater, pass the dog walk park on your left, pass the first entrance to the parking lot, make the next left into the parking lot and proceed all the way to the back corner. While there, we’ll walk around the Hog Hole area looking for field, water and forest edge birds. We might be walking in wet grass so be sure to wear proper footwear. From there we’ll decide where our next stop will be... perhaps Black Diamond Trail, Toughannock Point, Sheldrake point, or further up to Dean’s Cove. It will depend on available time and the inclination of the group. Sunday’s forecast is calling for it to be cool and breezy with showers, so dress for the weather. Bring a snack and something to drink if you want. I expect to return by around noon. Hope to see you there!
