[cayugabirds-l] Osprey Cam: Now streaming!

2024-04-16 Thread Barbara B. Eden
We're excited to announce that the camera viewing the ospreys at Salt Point is
now streaming live. Feel free to share the link.
See it at: http://www.youtube.com/@OspreysofSaltPoint

>From the description:
This nest was built by Orpheus in 2013, and with his two mates Ophelia
(2013--2022) and Ursula (2022--current), they have reared many healthy
fledglings over the years. The nest is ideally located within the Salt Point
Natural Area in Lansing, NY, at the confluence of Salmon Creek, a fast-flowing
trout stream, and fish-rich Cayuga Lake. Orpheus and his mate continually tend
their nest built atop a 55' dedicated nesting platform with a spectacular 360º
view-and protection against marauding great-horned owls.

This nest camera is solar-powered, operating in one of the cloudiest areas in
the USA. After a streak of consecutive overcast or stormy days, the batteries
drain and the recording may stop. After a few hours of sunshine, all will
return to normal. High winds may also cause noise from the camera housing.

Special thanks to Pat Tyrrell and the Town of Lansing's Parks & Recreation
Department, Candace E. Cornell, Ben Heller of Computer Room, and Friends of
Salt Point volunteers for their extraordinary work in getting this camera
installed and streaming.

Read Candace E. Cornell's "On Osprey Time"
(onospreytime.blogspot.com.) for the latest
on nest life and all things Ospreys.

Regards,
Board of Directors,
Friends of Salt Point

I just found the information about local sunflower seeds. Here's the important
info from that email:

His name is Jon Snow and is 3 generation of the SnoFarm in Brooktondale (town
of Caroline) 644 Buffalo Rd.

He is offering 40 lbs. bag of black oil for $25.00 each, locally grown and
harvested.

He accepts cash and check, sorry no Venmo.

The best time for pick up are evenings and weekends.

His phone number is 607-351-8693 give him a call to order and arrange a pick up
time.

[cayugabirds-l] Question on waterfowl on Seneca Lake vs. Cayuga Lake

2023-02-20 Thread Barbara B. Eden
Today we went to Seneca Lake to Lodi State Park and down to Watkins. There were
very few birds on the water (only a small flock of ring billed gulls)
Cayuga Lake usually has a wide variety of water fowl. Does anyone have any
theories about this? Is it because the shelf is shallower on Cayuga Lake so
it's easier for the birds to find food.
Thanks in advance for any insights

[cayugabirds-l] Baltimore Oriole question

2020-06-15 Thread Barbara B. Eden
For the first time ever in my Cayuga Heights yard, I have had a pair of
Baltimore Orioles still feeding at my jelly feeder. In previous years they are
just here for a few days.
I am hoping since they have stayed (for at least 6 weeks ) they are nesting
nearby
Any thoughts on this from birders more knowledgeable than me

Thanks,
Barbara Eden

[cayugabirds-l] Viewing the snow geese at the top of Cayuga Lake

2019-03-21 Thread Barbara B. Eden
On Wednesday there were fabulous views on the north end of Cayuga lake off of
Lower lake road (south of Wolfies). It was fun to watch the red heads and
buffle heads on the perimeter of the thousands of geese acting like herders
We also went to the muck lands and Knox Marcellus marsh and there were only a
couple of hundred

[cayugabirds-l] 6/20 Cleanup at Salt Point

2015-06-01 Thread Barbara B. Eden
We're excited about all the developments and community interest at Salt Point
this season. We have many new visitors enjoying the area, the north beach
vehicle access/parking project is shaping up nicely, and a team from Cargill
recently spent a day covering invasive knotweed, planting trees, and moving
utility poles. Soon we should see osprey chicks, new Leopold benches, and a
carpet of wildflowers along the water's edge.
The Town of Lansing Parks Recreation Department and many volunteers
contribute significantly to the improvement of the area, but we still need help
to keep Salt Point beautiful and accessible to all (including wildlife!).
Please join us Saturday, June 20, 9 a.m. to Noon for Volunteer Day at Salt
Point.
You're welcome to join us for all or part of the morning. A sample of the
tasks we're planning:
1) Trash pick-up and removal
2) Knotweed control
3) Trail maintenance
4) Tree maintenance, incl. trimming watering
5) Weeding
6) Mulching

We'll set up an organizing area at the DEC parking lot (on the left as you
enter Salt Point Rd., just before the railroad tracks).
Please bring gardening tools, gloves, buckets, etc.
We'll have water and light refreshments.

If possible, please email RSVP to our Volunteer Day Coordinator, Katrina
Binkewicz, klb1...@hotmail.commailto:klb1...@hotmail.com

[cayugabirds-l] Pileated Woodpecker Mating Dance

On Sat. when I went to my mailbox on North Sunset Drive Ithaca, I noticed that
my neighbors had a spotting scope aimed on a tree trunk. There were 2 Pileated
Woodpeckers scurrying up and down the tree. I was told that they had been there
for a least one hour. I got my binocs and watched for around 10 minutes and
ultimately they chased each other to the ground and flew off. What a thrill on
a glorious gardening day.

[cayugabirds-l] Restoring Wetlands Near Cayuga Inlet: December 1 7:00pm at TCPL

2011-11-28 Thread Barbara B. Eden
Restoring Wetlands Near Cayuga Inlet: Presentation December 1

A program to be held December 1 will present results of research showing how
Cayuga Inlet wetlands lost over the past two centuries might be restored.
The Tompkins County Environmental Management Council (EMC) recently reviewed
written records, aerial photographs, and maps to determine the extent of
wetland loss in the vicinity of the Cayuga Inlet during the past 200 years.
Wetlands can reduce flooding and erosion, act as a sedimentary trap, improve
water quality, and provide wildlife habitat. Wetlands have been lost during
this period primarily as the result of the use of dredged materials to fill
those wetlands adjacent to the Inlet and from increased land development in the
Elmira Road/Taughannock Boulevard area flood plain.
The EMC will sponsor a program “Cayuga Inlet Dredge Material: Opportunities for
Restoring Ecosystem Functions and Services” on Thursday, December 1, 7:00 –
9:00 p.m., in the Borg Warner Room of the Tompkins County Public Library, 101
E. Green Street, Ithaca. Cornell University Associate Professor Tom Whitlow and
his fall semester students in Restoration Ecology will present the results of
their research.
The class will also report on their trip to observe the Baltimore Harbor
dredging project. That dredged material is being utilized to restore Poplar
Island located 34 miles south of Baltimore in the Chesapeake Bay. The island,
formerly approximately 1,000 acres in size in the early 1800s, had shrunk, due
to erosion, to three small parcels of less than 10 acres. Today it is 1,140
acres and expanding, consisting of half wetlands and half uplands of valuable
wildlife habitat.
A display of aerial photographs and maps will be available for inspection
during the program.
The EMC is a citizen board that advises the Tompkins County Legislature on
matters relating to the environment and does not necessarily express the views
of the Tompkins County Legislature.
