buntings on Black Oak Road between Aiken Rd. and Rt. 79, on the road, and on 
both sides. (Town of Enfield, Tompkins Co. on the east side of the road, Town

tree for awhile, took flight and hovered over the field, went back to the tree, 
moved to a telephone pole, and then left.  Aiken Rd., just west of Halseyville

[cayugabirds-l] Redpolls, Aiken Rd. in Enfield

At least 100 redpolls were at the corner of Aiken and Tucker Roads, and in the 
weeds further up Tucker today.  I’ve seen them several times here in the last 
few weeks, but this was the first time they let themselves be photographed 
(badly!) and counted!

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Mt. Pleasant Common Redpolls...singing!

Encouraged by Marie’s report, I went looking for the Tucker Rd. redpolls, and 
found them, around 5:45!  About 40, chattering, in the scrubby apple tree I’ve 
found them before, and in the weeds below.  I hadn’t seen them since March 1, 
though I’ve been there many times.

And nearby was a mockingbird, showing off everything he’s ever heard.  Possibly 
the mockingbird now can speak redpoll.

[cayugabirds-l] Cedar Waxwings at Enfield Elementary School

[cayugabirds-l] Redpolls on Tucker Rd. in Enfield

I went in search of the redpolls again today - I hadn’t seen them since the 
snowfall January 19.  First I turned up 5 American Robins in the spot on Tucker 
Road where Rachel Lodder and I have seen the redpolls before, and was going to 
be happy with that, but when I returned maybe a half hour later there were at 
least 18 redpolls perched in the scrubby little apple tree near the south end 
of Tucker (east side).  They were feeding on the weeds under the tree, and 
twittering, when a falcon burst through the tree without catching anybody, and 
then perched in the top of a tall spruce on the other side of Tucker.  The 
redpolls froze, and were silent and still.  I could only make out the wing 
shape of the falcon - no color.  Fifteen minutes later, as I walked down Aiken, 
I heard the redpolls again, and saw the flock dive into more spruces, followed 
by the falcon again.  This time I did see the tail was clearly striped.  The 
falcon was again unsuccessful, and perched in the top of one of the spruces.  I 
think it was a merlin, but could be talked out of it.  Very very bad photos are

Thank you all for the replies.

Asher, Sandy, Laura, and Meena suggest dark-eyed junco.  Laurie suggests 
bluegrass gnatcatcher, or one of the little flycatchers,willow or alder.  My 
one glimpse could have been a junco, but it really was just a glimpse.

The song has been very consistent all three days I heard it - a high trill, 
then a trill about a major third higher.  That’s what it does!

It’s in a smallish grove/hedgerow between two fields, with a larger grove 
acrosss the road.  It sings from a place I can’t spot, except for the one time 
I saw it, when it was singing from the top of a dead tree at the side of the 
road.  Some of the time it was in walnut trees.

[cayugabirds-l] Help with bird song?

This bird has been on Tucker Rd. in Enfield since Friday May 31, at least.  I 
only got a brief look at it, on Tuesday - small and backlit - grayish, clear 
pale breast, shortish tail.  But the song is distinctive.  It was singing again 
today, but I couldn’t see it!  What is it?

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Possible Worm-eating Warblers in Lansing NY

The same thing happened to me today, also while eating breakfast on my porch, 
in Enfield!  I also tried BirdNET, and got the same result, although that might 
have been a “wild guess.” When I went looking for it I thought I saw a chipping 
sparrow, but couldn’t get a good look.

Later in the day the bird (I think the same bird) was closer, and was 
identified as a chipping sparrow. But I couldn’t find it.

Just now I heard it again, and again Merlin thought “worm-eating warbler.”  
When I got closer Merlin changed his mind to chipping sparrow, and when I 
finally got a good look, I did see chipping sparrow, singing.

I am really enjoying the new Merlin.

We just had a mixed flock of over a hundred blackbirds, including red-winged 
blackbirds, grackles, cowbirds, and starlings.  There were a few female 
cowbirds, and possibly some female red-winged, although probably more likely

We had one yesterday.  We’ve seen two at our kitchen window feeders regularly

[cayugabirds-l] Snow geese iin Enfield, plus blackbirds

A few snow geese flew over us in Enfield (Halseyville and Aiken) this 
afternoon, flying fairly low.  I didn't get a good look, because it was 
snowing!  They were turning, and I think ended up headed northeast of us.

And this morning, we also had a flock of about 80 mixed blackbirds, mostly 
adult male redwings, with a few first summer males, and a couple grackles.

Thank you for the tip—we saw a peregrine falcon just where you described today. 
It sat on the snag for several minutes, then pooped and flew off. The white on 
the cliff below seems to indicate that is a favorite spot.

We very often have bluebirds here in winter—Halseyville Rd in Enfield—but today one was checking out a bluebird box. Yesterday had a couple dozen red winged blackbirds under a feeder, and Saturday a single grackle. On Feb 13, 2023, at 10:39 AM, Deb Grantham  wrote:

A bright male Bluebird was spotted checking a nest box yesterday & I once again saw a gray Screech Owl sleeping in a “perfect “ hole in a tree, here at Kendal. 


Owl must have other roosts, since I don’t see it there every day.

Several years a goose has spent time on top of our silo, trying to convince its partner on the ground that it’s a great location. A few days ago, Carol and I took a walk on the south rim trail at Taughannock S.P.   Not too far from the parking lot off Jacksonville Road, she spotted a Canada Goose, nesting in an unexpected location (to put it mildly).   Here, have a look:

So I'm wondering if this bird might have been raised by peregrines.  (Hey, if humans can be raised by wolves...)    But seriously: Have any of you observed similarly maverick nesting behavior in this species?  I'm wondering how common this might be.
