Subject: Robin Mystery

So hear's a mystery. Yesterday morning I went out the entry door and found one
robin egg sitting in the corner on the stones of the patio. By afternoon,
there were two. This morning there are three. Have you ever heard of bizarre
behavior like this?

I would rather participate in on-site protests than to put my email address out
there. When it come to development, whether it be renewal energy or other
types, to the developers - wildlife just get in the way. We see it in the
declining wildlife numbers globally, and in the ugliness of the projects, but
developers seem to think that wildlife can just move to the next woodlot. It’s
rare that once any development for renewal energy projects is proposed that it
can be stopped. Look at the massive solar farms that are springing up all over,
consuming thousands of acres of habitat. Wildlife will always take a back seat
to development.

Protect Birds From High-Risk Wind Energy Project in New
York!

Dear John and Sue,

New York state is about to set a dangerous precedent for birds. A high-risk
wind energy project, Heritage Wind, will likely get approved, in spite of clear
dangers to birds and outcry from the public, conservation groups, and wildlife
management agencies.

It would be the first project approved under the state’s new renewable energy
regulations, and would send a signal to the wind energy industry that turbines
can be placed anywhere in New York, regardless of impacts to birds.

It’s bad news, but we’re not giving up. Under New York’s new leadership, there
is still hope to eliminate the project’s most egregious impacts on birds.

We’re asking Governor Kathy Hochul to ensure that the Heritage Wind project
takes measures to protect vulnerable bird populations. Will you add your name
to our
petition?

The location of Heritage Wind — a 5,800-acre facility — presents numerous risks
for birds. The project is dangerously close to Iroquois National Wildlife
Refuge, and Oak Orchard and Tonawanda State Wildlife Management Areas.

This biodiverse wetland complex supports nesting Bald Eagles, which are
particularly vulnerable to

[cayugabirds-l] Snow Geese - A Huge Problem

2022-03-22 Thread Charles Rouse
Greetings All,
For all of you who have been seeing the Snow Goose "breathtaking spectacle"
throughout the Finger Lakes area and think it's just the coolest thing you've
ever seen - think again.
A number of years ago I attended a program at MNWR which focused on the
out-of-control Snow Goose population and the devastating effect they are having
the tundra where they breed. Bottom line is that Snow Geese are destroying the
ultra-fragile tundra, which is made up of primarily of lichens which grow
exceedingly slow. Snow Goose foraging behavior causes them to uproot the
lichens entirely rather than nip them off above ground, which results in a
Tundra desert.
I encourage everyone to Google: Trouble on the Tundra: Snow Geese Under The
Gun, by Howard Schneider, 1997. If this was a major concern 25 years ago,
imagine what the effect is today.
