We've had Pine Siskins, sporadically, all winter but today the number is 
greater with 17 individuals and they've been here all day. Also, had a female 
Purple Finch today.

We had 6 Ravens fly over our home in Richford last night about 8:40 pm. I 
assumed they were the local pair's family but can't say for sure. They were 
headed in the direction of Ithaca.

briefly at the feeders the last couple of days. I was surprised this morning to 
see a FEMALE Red-Winged Blackbird scratching for spilled seed under a feeder. 
My understanding has been that the males arrive first in early spring, usually 
in large flocks, and claim territories. It is only later that the females 
arrive. 

Has anyone else noticed female Red-wings yet?

joined them about 40 minutes later followed soon thereafter by 16 PINE

As of yesterday morning we had a female coming to our feeder too.  I think our 
breeders  departed on 9/12 but beginning again on 9/23 we've had one daily, 
with the exception of today (could have just missed seeing it this AM).  I 
suspect this latest bird is a migrant that has chosen to stop and refuel for 
awhile.  It is a noticeably chunkier looking than the birds seen earlier this 
month. Don't know if it is fluffed up due to the temperatures or if it has 
added fat in preparation for migration.

I found a PRAIRIE WARBLER this morning singing persistently from the old field 
adjacent to our property.  I suspect it is a newly arrived migrant since I had

Unfortunately, I did not learn about this Red-necked Phalarope until until last 
night.  I stopped by this morning, 5/24, but alas it was NOT there.  I talked

This pond has been good for shorebirds since it was created, I just
looked through my eBird reports and the first record I have is a
Lesser Yellowlegs on May 3 and Dunlin on May 5.  I've made this an

Great morning in Sapsucker Woods as well. I arrived at about 7:45 and walked 
until 8:30. I started from the Fuller Wetlands and came across a nice warbler 
flock at the foot bridge along the lower trail. Here are the highlights: 
   
Warbling Vireo (1 singing near Fuller Wetlands, another silently foraging near 
footbridge) 
Yellow-throated Vireo (singing persistently along lower trail) 
Red-eyed Vireo (singing near feeder garden, hunted down with the help of Chris 
Wood) 
Yellow-rumped Warblers (many everywhere) 
Blackburnian Warbler (singing softly along lower trail) 
Black-throated Blue Warbler (singing softly near footbridge) 
Yellow Warblers (2 or 3) 
Northern Waterthrush (heard from Podell boardwalk) 
Ovenbird (heard in 2 locations) 
Least Flycatcher (heard from lower trail) 
Wood Thrushes (2 calling only) 
Ruby-crowned Kinglets (several in different places) 
Baltimore Oriole (singing at edge of pond near feeder blind) 
White-throated Sparrows (many, many everywhere, including 3 high up in a tree 
near the Sherwood Platform!) 
Swamp Sparrow (near Sherwood platform) 
   
Wes Hochachka reported seeing a Palm Warbler near the Sherwood Platform and a 
Scarlet Tanager being chased by two Rose-breasted Grosbeaks. 
And Chris Wood pointed out a Solitary Sandpiper near the feeder garden.

[cayugabirds-l] Goetchius Wetland, 3/15

Hi All,

I spent a few minutes this morning seeing what was at the preserve. Found at 
least 7 KILLDEER, first I've seen this year, and my personal highlight a 
WILSONS SNIPE.  The snipe was in the open water area at the south end of Flat 
Iron Road.  Lots of blackbirds, one Mallard, 21 Canada Geese and a few SONG 
SPARROWS were also present.

Oh, and at home we had our FOY Song Sparrow.

At last it is really woodcock season in Mecklenburg.  At least 4 individuals 
were peenting and skydancing when I went out at 6 am, audible from every side 
of our house.  I heard them last evening in the rainy dusk, and they may have 
continued all night under
 the bright moon.  Anyone who lives in an open area should go out at twilight 
and listen.  (There were peepers calling from the creek, too.)

[cayugabirds-l] Goetchius Wetland shorebirds

Hi All,

I stopped briefly this morning at Goetchius Wetland and found a nice variety of 
shorebirds.  There was at least one GREATER YELLOWLEGS, KILLDEERS, SEMIPALMATED 
PLOVER, SOLITARY SANDPIPERS, and what I think were LEAST SANDPIPERS.  I had 
SPOTTED SANDPIPERS there last week and would not be surprised if there are 
other species that I did not see or couldn't identify.  This is an area that 
deserves to be checked out more thoroughly and I hope to do so soon!

Hi Folks,

     What a loony idea. (Just joking)

     The culvert in question is on my commute path and in the last 35 years I 
have passed this area 300 days of the year x 2 for round trips x 35 years. 
Nearly 100% of the time, I look for birds when crossing the culvert, although I 
look at the upstream pond more than running stream on the down hill side of the 
culvert. Even so, I have looked at the downstream side thousands of times and 
even pulled over and stopped to look both ways on hundreds of times. Seeing any 
loon in the stream is unlikely and is a once in many thosands event. Seeing two 
different loons in two weeks, when none had ever been seen before, is possible 
but really unlikely. Still, I wouldn't throw out the possibility. About 15 
years ago the DEC, Karen, and Sandy Padulka rescued three loons from less than 
a mile away in an even smaller pool in a stream following an ice storm that 
made all the fields look like water. Wierd things happen, but not very often.

I did not see the loon of two weeks ago so I can't speak to any comparisons 
with today's bird.  However, I too find it hard to believe two loons would make 
the same mistake.  I'm still wondering just what kind of mistake was made.  It 
seems unlikely any loon would try to land or take off from this small area of 
water.  More likely a loon would land on the other side of the road where there 
is much more open water.  I wonder, like someone mentioned two weeks ago, if 
the original loon was sucked through the culvert pipe, depositing the bird on 
the east side of the road.  If the pipe diameter is even large enough to pass a 
loon this might explain the wing injury.  If today's bird is a different loon 
the same scenario could explain it's predicament.  There is a significant 
whirlpool above the culvert on the west side of the road and I saw no sign this 
morning that the road was flooded last night, giving a bird the chance to just 
swim across the road.

Anyway, just some thoughts...

I wasn't able to observe it for more than 5 minutes, but maybe someone else 
might have time in the next day or two to watch it for a bit to see if it 
extends its wings (of course absence of impairment would not mean it's not the 
original bird, which may have recovered). 
Like Kevin, I have a hard time believing another common loon made the same 
error.
It is in the small patch of water on the east side of the road, near the 
southern tip of the preserve, which is where the other one was found, and last 
seen.There doesn't seem to be enough room there for a loon to take off.

Can anyone tell if this bird is suffering the same impairment of its wing as 
the original Loon. That may make this call a little easier. 

Also, for people who have observed this present Loon and the environs, is there 
a greater expanse of water that will allow the bird to take off this time, if 
it is not the injured one?

I stopped by Goetchius Wetland Presreve this morning (4/18) on my way to work 
and did not see this bird.  Hopefully, this is an indication that the bird was 
successfully rescued.

There was a nice pair of COMMON MERGANSERS close to the road and the drainage 
pipe that might have snared the loon.

[cayugabirds-l] Cornell Lane, 1/28

Hi All,

After numerous failed attempts to see SNOW BUNTINGS on Mt. Pleasant I finally 
scored this morning at Cornell Lane.  There were about 200 Snow Buntings 
foraging very close to the road providing great looks.  I did not see any 
Horned Larks or Lapland Longspurs.

Also, just to the south of Hartford village on Rt 38, was a flock of aprx. 75 
WILD TURKEYS.

[cayugabirds-l] Hoary Redpolls- Richford

Hi All,

This morning Esther and I were treated to the sight of 110+ Redpolls as they 
swirled around our front yard.  Unfortunately I didn't have the time to really 
check them out but Esther did and she got a good count as they came down to 
forage under the feeders.  There were still some up in the elm but they 
scattered before she could count them.  However, she was pretty certain that 
there were a few HOARY REDPOLLS in this flock.  She noted that these birds were 
distinctly lighter in color than the others and really stood out amongst the 
crowd.

Hi All,

We had our first of season COMMON REDPOLL this morning, mixed in with  
about a dozen House Finches.  Also, had a SHARP-SHINNED HAWK.   
Yesterday, we saw our first of season AMERICAN TREE SPARROW.


Time to put chains on the tractor and do some plowing!

Hi All,

This past weekend marked the beginning of my 10th year of participation in 
Project Feeder Watch http://www.birds.cornell.edu/pfw/index.html so I thought 
I'd share my list.

COOPER'S HAWK  1
Mourning Dove  1
Red-bellied Woodpecker  1 (new regular visitor since this past winter)

EVENING GROSBEAK  5  (2 females, 3 males)

Unfortunately, it seems the Pine Siskins we had for at least 5 consecutive days 
moved out last Wednesday.  Evening Grosbeaks appeared again for a few hours 
yesterday and we had two females this morning.  Still haven't seen any American 
Tree Sparrows.

In case you're wondering, we have 3 tube feeders, 1 hopper feeder, and 2 niger 
seed socks setup.

[cayugabirds-l] Evening Grosbeaks- Richford

Hi All,

We just had two female EVENING GROSBEAKS visit our feeders.  We also  
had up to nine PINE SISKINS over the weekend and as I type this a  
GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET is moving around the feeder tree just 10' feet  
away!

Of course I can't say for sure what brought it in, but we had an unexpected 
GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET this morning.  Haven't seen any of these since spring 
migration.

I stopped by Myers Point on Cayuga Lake in Lansing early this morning.
 A Pectoral Sandpiper and a Lesser Yellowlegs were feeding in the
puddles on the lawn and a Greater Yellowlegs flew by.  It would be
interesting to know if anything stopped in with the passage of the
front.

[cayugabirds-l] Broad-winged Hawk eats American Toads

Hi All,

On Sunday, about 6pm we had our 15th new bird species of the weekend, a 
BROAD-WINGED HAWK.  Like Geo, our pond was/is hosting many mating American 
Toads.  The hawk took advantage of the easy pickings.  I digi-scoped some 
rather poor photos in low light from about 300 feet.  If you're interested you

Wow!  Lots of new birds here this morning.  Highlights so far:

NASHVILLE WARBLER- 6
YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER- 1
YELLOW WARBLER- 1
BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER- 1
OVENBIRD- 2
MAGNOLIA WARBLER- 1
COMMON YELLOWTHROAT- 1

All but the Yellow-rump were new today.  Our other new arrivals were  
ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK and GREEN HERON.  44 species and the day is  
still young!

Sorry gang but I'm the one that started the Bell's Vireo rumor!  After reading 
this post and doing a little research I now realize the bird was a/the 
BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER.  I'm not very familiar with this Gnatcatcher and I've 
never seen/heard a Bell's Vireo.  I guess not-so-close and no cigar for me...

I saw 
backlit there yesterday as I went past at the speed limit with a fare, and a 
PINE WARBLER 
singing in pines beside The Parkway in Cayuga Heights near Parkway Place, a 
good sighting 
from the taxi.

[cayugabirds-l] Rusty Blackbird @ Sapsucker Woods

Hi All,

I got a great look at a RUSTY BLACKBIRD at aprx. 3pm today.  It was near the 
foot bridge on Wilson Trail North.  I've also seen a BROWN CREEPER in the same 
area twice in the past 5 days.
