2024-04-15 Thread Donna Lee Scott
See msg below re apparent Osprey hit by car.
She meant Lansing schools.
I think she meant bird is on north side of road, same side as school bldg.
across from AllSaints church.
Can anybody go check on this bird?

Hi Donna,
I see your name often on the bird threads, and I’m driving to work but I
think I just passed an osprey that got hit by a car , Right before landing
school- across from the church where the two osprey platforms are. If driving
to the school it’s on the left hand side of the road. I couldn’t stop but I
didn’t know if you knew anyone to check on it!
Thanks! Sorry so random!

[cayugabirds-l] Red headed Woodpecker reported

2023-12-16 Thread Donna Lee Scott
After I watched the Snow geese for a while at Dean’s Cove, then by the road in
Varick, I drove north on Rt. 89 to the Knox Marcellus marsh to look at the
sandhill cranes ( & swans & ducks).

I think there were 3-400 cranes & many of them were calling & flying out of
the marsh , across East Road, & several seemed to land in a corn field just
over the hill to the west.

Just as I was about to leave, a guy in an olive-ish-green Subaru Forester
pulled up to chat, and we talked about the snow geese which he thinks flew out
of the main pool of Montezuma visitors center in the morning & over to the lake.
As he was about to leave, he said, “and don’t forget about the Redheaded
woodpecker over at Cayuga Lake State Park!”

I said that I didn’t know about that bird and he said it was across from one
of the offices & a parking lot of the state park people, and on the lake side
of the road.

I did not have time to go look for it & the sun was setting, so I thought
chances were slim that I could find it, anyway.

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Fwd: Limpkin eating snails?

2023-10-23 Thread Donna Lee Scott
Willie D’Anna reported in the March 2023 Kingbird that the Niagara River
Limpkin found near Lewiston, NY Nov. 2022 was eating grove snails, aka
brown-lipped snails cepaea nemoralis it was finding in a weed-covered slope.

That Limpkin was subsequently captured, taken to a rehab facility for care and
further feeding, and then taken south to be released in a wetland in South
Carolina. See the March 2023 Kingbird report for details.

I wonder if anyone will try to help this Limpkin go south before winter?

Hi, Dave,

Can you forward this to cayugabirds and nybirds. I’m not sure I remember how.

Courtney Jett located the Limpkin west of the boat launch at Pirozzolo Park
this morning at about 11 am. The bird foraged in the Japanese Knotweed between
the small path near the river and the main path, then moved north of the main
trail. It was last seen at the edge of the knotweed and lawn between the
pickleball courts and the community gardens, turning south onto the trail back
to the main trail.

Thanks,

Clouds poured overhead, propelled by a relentless northwest wind. Ann and I
wandered the abandoned land below the levee alongside the Chemung River. We
thought we were prepared for this quest, yet our equipment was now heavy and
awkward, and the chill air sapped our heat. One of my boots seemed to be
leaking.

Somewhere very near here, Elmira Limpkin had been reported again. The first
time, over a week ago, she was said to be walking a forest trail, and that’s
certainly what the photos appeared to show. But the observer had been confused,
seeing something so improbable and beyond her experience. The next day over a
dozen searchers scoured the area. They came up with nothing. This morning
Elmira Limpkin had been standing on a shingle beach. I saw this new photograph.
Could it be true? We had to see for ourselves.

All around, trees creaked and moaned. Dead leaves carpeted the mud. Our vision
was blocked repeatedly by thickets of invasive Japanese Knotweed. Ann and I did
not even know Jeremy was here, but suddenly he was signaling us to the edge of
the floodplain. Adam had passed us earlier on a footpath, and he emerged from
the forest along with Michael, to join us. Jeremy gestured at a curtain of
head-high weeds. Beyond, at the far side of a clearing, a huge, strange bird
gazed at us from the shadows. It stood on tall, dark, thick, stork-like legs.
Its long bill was dull brown with yellowish tones around the mouth. The beak
curved, but lacked the slender tapering grace of the bill of an ibis. This was
a heavier weapon that hung down over the bird’s long folded neck. Its face was
dusty gray with feathers that turned to stubby spikes on the back of its head.
The rest of its plumage would have been dark chocolate but for the white flecks
on its neck which became arrows down its breast then daggers on its wing
coverts. We stared. This tropical creature did not belong here in Upstate New
York. Long ago I had seen such a mollusk-eating bird and heard its wild screams
in the darkness of a baldcypress swamp in Florida.

As we tried to take pictures, the bird began walking... slowly... silently...
toward us... becoming even harder to see. Now we knew it was only a few feet
away, but it was hard to tell just how close. Our cameras quit working, showing
only shadows and blurry forms. We dared not move. What was it doing? We
wondered and whispered. Minutes seem to pass before we saw that the bird had
turned aside. It kept a brown eye on us while strolling behind tree trunks and
among rotten logs, heading toward the river. As it crossed the final opening I
could see its lengthy webless toes with every step.

Then it stopped and stood alongside the final patch of Knotweed atop the
riverbank. We had been following at distance but we stopped, too. We finally
got some sharp - and we hoped indisputable - photographs.

Jeremy hurried away first, needing to get some sleep before working a hospital
shift. Adam joined Ann & me as we climbed the levee toward the normal world,
but Michael went back into the woods, wondering why his friend Phil never came
out.

From the top of the levee Adam turned toward the dead end of a street where he
left his car, while Ann & I hiked to the end of the levee. Noisy kids on a
playground ignored us, but a guy at a fire station stared at our telescopes and
binoculars and cameras. Maybe he knew what it’s like beyond the levee by the
river.

the river standing and resting in the dead-leaf-strewn floodplain forest
immediately southeast of Pirozzolo Park in an area which seemed to be
associated with a culvert below the corner of the levee. The bird was standing
almost under the Japanese Knotweed which covered the embankment above. We were
surprised when it walked toward us, coming within a few yards behind a narrow
screen of knotweed, then it turned and strolled toward the river, sometimes out
in the open, and rested again at the top of the riverbank for several minutes,

Re:[cayugabirds-l] fledgling crows

2023-07-01 Thread Donna Lee Scott
As per Anne’s message that fledgling Amer. Crows are out & about now, today I
had my first ever “show” of a young A. Crow begging near a parent this morning.
It flapped its wings & made a series of begging calls and chased after a parent.

I scatter mixed bird feed, as well as dried-up used wet cat food & leftover
cooked egg on the ground & the parents kept feeding the raucous fledge peanuts
& other goodies!

Fun to watch the crowlet act like a titmouse fledgling!

As for the fish comment - well yes on the levity a little  Dead fish appear
on the shoreline from time to time (big kills sporadically in the spring), but
I don't know their feeding habits very well, so I assumed that they like being

Hi Kevin

I think I see why Merlin was back n forth.

I think your audio is of a demanding American crow fledgling whose nasal begs
come close to the slightly down slurred and nasal ‘simple version’ fish crow.
If you listen toward the end of the recording , you can hear a quickening of
the notes and a slightly ‘gobbling’ sound. That is the fledgling continuing to
beg as it is getting fed—beg calls with a parental bill in its mouth and
swallowing at the same time.

Lots of American Crow fledglings out or just coming out now.

I assume that the comment on fish in the pond was a bit of levity? Maybe it is
worth mentioning that Fish Crows don’t ‘fish’ Or particularly seek fish as far
as I know. But they do seem to like shoreline or river edge scavenging, rather
than foraging on lawns like American crows. And also, less popular with humans,
they seem to be good at finding bird nests in trees.

Anyway—that’s my Id of the crow voice on your audio.

Best, Anne

So they are a threat to baby TVs.
I did notice that there was very little odor in the boathouse while the birds

Maybe lack of odor will help hide the chick(s) from predators.
Here’s hoping.

The nestling (sitting on just beach gravel, so not much of a "nest").
Chick sat with its beak resting straight down on the gravel much of the time.
It hissed if I came near it, which I did not do very much.
Parent was with it some of the time, but parent out hunting a lot.

I looked up TVs in "Birds of the World" and it (and Robyn Bailey) said that TV
chicks are very slow to mature, taking 2-3 months to fledge.
Towards the end of August the chick was wandering around in the boathouse and
was by then mostly black feathered.
I have photos.

By third week of August I saw Hissy was gone from inside and not at the place
outside the boathouse where it usually went by then.
I saw Hissy fly on August 24, 2020. So a little over 2 months since it hatched.

Its face & beak by now was gray, as was its feet. Its feet may have been gray
from hatching, but not sure because I could not see them.

It hung around the area by itself for several days.
I saw it perched on the boathouse second story deck railing.
One time it perched over me in a big oak tree that overhung the RR track that
is in my former backyard.

By this time I had moved to Kendal and was not at 535 Lansing Station Rd very
much.
House sale closing early September and I was not there anymore.

Realtor joked: "Turkey Vulture conveys with house!"
Lawyer joked that this was the first time she had to consider a turkey vulture
during a house sale.

I have no contact with new owners, so do not know if the TV tried to nest there
again.

Cool.

Donna Scott, what is your experience with timing of eggs and chicks in the nest
in your boathouse a couple of years ago?

Abandoned shack in the woods sounds PERFECT for a Turkey Vulture nest!

In late April I found a Turkey Vulture scraping around in the domestic debris
on the floor of one of our abandoned shacks deep in the woods. I coded it as NB
(nest building).

Over the next few weeks I observed several comings and goings that I
interpreted hopefully as shift-changes. She’s still in there today.

Sitting in a scrape in the trash for five weeks running seems so purposeful
that I feel pretty confident there must be an egg or two, soon to hatch…

Re: [cayugabirds-l] starling fledglings! and solar power!

2023-06-04 Thread Donna Lee Scott
a Starling nested inside the tall storage cupboard in my carport here at Kendal

Lotsa noise from nestlings & the parents, lotsa flung poop as parents flew out!
Now the nestlings have fledged & I need to tie door shut to avoid a repeat

Wow, it seems starlings fledged this last week! I’ve been hearing them begging

only been ebirding it since 2011 or so.) And this week was the first time this
year it was filled with begging baby starlings! That noise was constant during
the hour I was there looking for tagged crows. More starling fledglings calling
all around this weekend. Cleary their breeding was highly synchronized to have
so many of them out all at once.

So, apropos of the current discussion about costs and benefits of trying to
clean up our energy use… I alone have submitted 668 checklists from the compost
hotspot, mostly one-hour-long mostly-stationary censuses of crows, during which
time I recorded all of the birds that I could detect. This easily covers the
time when the fields above the compost were horse pasture into the current
situation with a solar farm. Some creative person could surely do an analysis
of breeding birds detected in the horse pasture days versus the current solar
farm. It hasn’t affected to crows so much, but definitely the wintering gulls
do not like the change. Not sure about breeders. Not many birds breed in the
middle of a horse pasture, although lots do around the sides.

Salmon creek thru most of its course flows south. When it gets to ~ Myers Rd,
it flows more westerly.
So standing on creek bank at Salt Pt., you would say you are on ‘north’ side,
looking at ‘south’ side - into houses, then Myers Park.

I will be reporting this P Warbler tomorrow at the Friends of Salt Pt.

Re:[cayugabirds-l] Black vultures

2023-04-22 Thread Donna Lee Scott
When I was in the Everglades in 2020, in one of the main parking areas
(Anhinga?) off the main road to Flamingo, I witnessed several black vultures
ripping black rubber parts off parked cars!

One had to get there early to get one of about 20 tarps the Nat’l. Park Service
provided to cover ones car.

On another trip in northeastern Florida, I was at one of the state springs
parks & watched a lone black vulture decimating the picnic food of people who
had left packages of hot dog buns & a big , cut-in-half watermelon with no
covering on a picnic table.
They were in for a surprise when they returned!
I thought, “ BV is getting even with humans for all their various
transgressions against the bird world!”
(BTW, I was thrilled to encounter 11 Florida Scrub Jays in the thickets along
US Hwy. 19 just outside the park when I left later in the day).

hooking its bill under them and trying to rip it up. In the few minutes I

[cayugabirds-l] Sappy branch

2023-04-14 Thread Donna Lee Scott
A live 1-inch-diameter branch was cut off, leaving a 3-foot length when my
screen pergola was built onto the side of my cottage. It is 4 feet above a bird
feeder frequented by chickadees, which is hanging on a lower branch.

I kept noticing a wet spot on the ground near base of tree, then finally saw
the moisture dripping from this cut-off branch & hitting the ground.

Yesterday, while sitting inside the pergola, I saw a chickadee repeatedly
sitting on the end of that branch, drinking sap as it flowed out !

Plus, I thought - the river birch is watering itself since the sap flow is
quite constant.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Osprey at Sapsucker Woods this evening

2023-04-05 Thread Donna Lee Scott
Hi jane
CU pond near airport/ intersection of Snyder & Cherry Roads - you can drive in
north driveway of Equine center to fence , park in side , out of roadway, &
walk south along fence till you are near osprey nest tower.

Other ponds by Niemi rd are easily seen right by road, but last I looked there
is no osprey tower there.

Niemi rd can be good birding sometimes.
I used to live in the house on the north side of the part of Niemi rd west of
Hanshaw rd.

Good birding,
Donna

[cayugabirds-l] woodcock on Mt. Kendal

2023-03-21 Thread Donna Lee Scott
Last night (Monday) not long after sunset 3 of us inmates heard and saw the
Woodcock doing its display flight and peenting!
I think we saw it both ascending and descending.

It seems to have quit right after 8 PM both nights I was listening/observing.
It was in the same spot on Mt. Kendal as it was Friday and Saturday.

Yesterday here, I saw a single Mockingbird again. I hope the mate shows up
(pair here last fall)!
I have seen a Song Sparrow and heard a Carolina Wren, along with Cardinals and
other usual bird residents.
Lots more bird singing in the morning - the start of the Dawn Chorus!

[cayugabirds-l] Woodcock at Mr. Kendal

2023-03-18 Thread Donna Lee Scott
Tonight after dinner in the main building here at Kendal (7:05), I walked to
the small hill to the south of "campus" that we call Mt. Kendal to see if I
could find the Woodcock that was reported by Nelly Farnum last night.

Finally, after it was almost dark (~7:40), I heard a relatively faint peenting
from the southeast side of the hill near the bushes by the houses on Spruce
Lane, Cayuga Hts. this is more towards Triphammer Road.
I walked that direction to get closer and was across an overgrown grassy area
from where the bird was peenting.

Then peenting stopped saw nothing due to bad eyes and darkness, but soon I
heard the twittery sounds the Woodcock makes as it descends from high in the
sky!
I heard this several times before it seemed to be done about 7:55.
I was very cold by then, so I left to go home to 377.

Nelly Farnum and I will go there tomorrow at 7:30 to see it we can find the
bird again!

Nelly 3 years ago convinced the grounds crew here to stop mowing "Mt. Kendal"
except for a few grassy trails; it has grown into a nice grassy place with
goldenrod, asters, tall grass, teasels, etc.
And now it has a Woodcock! Just down the road from all the malls.
Build it and they will come!

[cayugabirds-l] airport/Kendal

2023-03-18 Thread Donna Lee Scott
At about noon I was driving along Snyder Road north of the Ithaca International
Airport  looking for possible N. Harriers.

I saw instead the usual Red-tailed Hawk, who, annoyed at me driving slowly by
it perched on the N-S eastern fence,
took off and acted like a Harrier, flying very low over the ground to a more
distant place to perch on another fence.

Besides the Red-tail, I saw some A. Crows and I think I heard an Eastern
Meadowlark; it sang only part of its usual song.
I did not see it.

Meanwhile, here at the old folks home, Nelly Farnum is sure she heard a
Woodcock peenting over on Mount Kendal !
We are going out tomorrow at dusk to try to hear/see it. I may go tonight after
dinner.

I had a pretty Song Sparrow in my “back yard” for a while yesterday.
Finally, our Kendal Screech Owl has not been seen in its perfect tree hole for
over a week ☹.

[cayugabirds-l] Starlings

While some of you have had Grackles and Red-winged Blackbirds, with hawks and
Crows showing off in your yards, I had about 200 Starlings and my usual 25
Pigeons & 4 Crows here , decimating my feeders in the snow today!
Good entertainment for the two indoor cats!

We did have a Rough-legged Hawk seen by a good birder here a couple days ago,
but I did not see it. And the local Screech Owl has been seen in his hole off
and on. He/she looks asleep, but I can tell it is looking at me from the bottom

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Cardinals still nesting.

2022-08-28 Thread Donna Lee Scott
Bluebirds are nesting again in a nest box across the loop road from my cottage
here at Kendal. They nested there earlier this summer.

I saw the male take away a fecal sac 2-3 days ago & my neighbor, Nelly Farnham,
& I see the parents bringing insects to the box. I saw the female with a big
bug go to the box opening at twilight today.
Nelly saw at least 1 chick inside when she took a quick peek.

A pair of cardinals currently is feeding young in a large spirea bush just
outside our kitchen window. Nest construction began 8/5, completed 8/6,
incubation underway by 8/10. At least one nestling had hatched by last Tuesday
(8/23) when at different times each parent was observed feeding it/them over
the course of the day. Nest is quite well built & sturdy and they seem to be
diligent parents. The nest is so close to the window (maybe 2' away, at eye
level) that we try to stay away and not watch them too closely - plus nest
unusually has high sides and we can't see what's inside yet anyway.

According to Birds of the World, nestlings generally fledge at 9 or 10 days,
and can "fly strongly" a week after that but still depend on their parents for
help with food. They "attain independence from parental feeding 25–56 days
after fledging." Since they don't migrate, perhaps they don't need to mature
as early in the season - they don't need to bulk up for a long flight, just
learn how to find food so they can get through the winter and whatever they
might learn in summer won't do them that much good come November or January
anyway.

The current Breeding Bird Atlas Breeding Guidelines Bar
Graph
lists N. Cardinals are "B" (Breeding) through mid-August and "E" (either
migration or breeding, which in their case presumably means either dispersal or
breeding) through the end of October.

briefly on sunflower seeds. Probably there are folks reading this who know
better than I, and I’m interested in your opinions, but it seems to me that
August 28 is pretty late to have nestlings, which is what her activity
indicated. Late or normal, it was cool to witness.

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Hummingbird feeders & unwanted guests

2022-07-30 Thread Donna Lee Scott
Here at Kendal I have set up a bird bath and it is used by many birds and also
sometimes the squirrels. And perhaps nocturnal visitors.
I empty and clean it every other day because it wants to keep turning into a
slugey pond.

I temporarily have all my feeders hanging in trees due to not getting baffled
posts installed yet.
So, I get big ants in the humming bird feeder, but the H birds seem to get
sugar water OK.
Again, I clean and refill that feeder frequently.

I just want to remind all that we are in very dry conditions and all sources of
liquid will be more essential for each creature. Their motivation to learn must
be very elevated.

All guests are considered to be co habitants on the land we share and all are
welcome here. But we do have an effective squirrel baffle over our hummingbird
feeder and two bird baths and a little garden pond that is utilized by all.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] bird carcasses for the Cornell Museum of Vertebrates

2022-05-20 Thread Donna Lee Scott
FYI. 5/20/22
lab of O receptionist just told me they will not accept any bird carcasses due
to Avian Flu.
I just tried to give him an oriole that most likely was struck by a car in my
road. But since i did not witness actual strike, he could not accept the dead
bird.
I found it in middle of road. Looked freshly killed.

per hour. I opted to let nature take its course and let the poor little guy go
through its grieving process ( if that's what's going on?). Also worth noting ,
I have no orioles at my feeder (highly irregular) and only 2 males chasing
eachother through my yard, versus the presence of several in the trees. I'm not

of predation. Barbara Clise, in King Ferry

Dear Cayugabirds community —

When you encounter birds in New York State that have died of natural causes and
that are in good condition, please consider donating them to become specimens
in the Cornell Museum of Vertebrates, which is located in the same building as
the Lab of Ornithology. At the CUMV we largely rely on these ’salvage’
specimens to keep our collection current, as there are all kinds of things one
can do with a modern specimen that can’t so easily be done with older specimens.

We maintain all New York and federal permits for this purpose. We do not
maintain state permits for most other states, so please do not donate birds
from farther afield.

The major exception pertains to Bald and Golden Eagles: special federal laws
cover eagles and we are not allowed to accept eagle materials.

When preparing to bring us a bird carcass:

1. Place it in a ziplock-type bag, one bird per bag.
2. Inside the bag include a slip of paper that notes the date the bird was
found, the location, and your name. Specimens without date and location have
little research value.
3. Put the bag in your freezer if you must, but then bring it to us as soon as
possible (technically, you are allowed to possess these birds only if you are
actively bringing them to a designated museum like the CUMV).
4. On arrival at the Lab during open visitor hours, just let the person at the
front reception desk know that you want to drop off a specimen.

Please be sure to consider your own personal health and safety when handling
dead birds. If you can use a ziplock like a ‘glove’ and never touch the bird,
so much the better. If you need to touch it, wash your hands immediately and
thoroughly. As you probably know, this is an avian flu outbreak year, so being
especially cautious is wise (though there have been no human cases thus far).
Personally I would not hesitate to bring in a bird that died of a known trauma
like a window-strike, cat kill, or car-strike, but I would think twice about
handling without PPE a dead bird found with no known cause of death.

Best to all,

Irby Lovette
Director, CUMV

Due to the rarity of this warbler, I thought that some might be interested in
the following. I found a window mortality Lawrence’s warbler outside of the
Veterinary Research Tower on Cornell’s campus this morning. Bird mortalities
have decreased here since they put new glass in about 6 years ago, but every
spring and fall there are still a few dead birds that I find. In case anyone
wants the bird for study, I have saved it in my lab freezer.

[cayugabirds-l] T Vulture

2022-05-12 Thread Donna Lee Scott
This morning I was with my grounds worker & we were going into the boathouse on
the beach to clear out leaves & piles of sticks brought by flood last fall.
As I open the door, there was a loud commotion & then I saw a smallish Turkey
Vulture flying inside at the lake end of boathouse!
It landed on the gravel & got out under the boat exit doors, the bottom if
which is 2 feet above the ground!

That was curious, but lately TVs have been perched on roof of & trees near
boathouse.
However as Rick & I started cleaning the gravel floor, I found in a little
scrape with a few leaves one lovely speckled egg!
Ms. TV wants to nest in there!

Ordinarily this would be fine with me, but june 6 I am moving to Kendal & a
couple weeks after that my house (& the boathouse) goes up for sale.

Will a month + be enough time for more eggs to be laid, incubated , hatched &
chicks fledged?

I am SO busy now, I don’t have time to look up this info.

Another bother: she is pooping in there & it is quite stinky -not a prime
condition for selling real estate!

What to do?

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Avian flu

2022-04-19 Thread Donna Lee Scott
My brother from Florida who is a beginning birder and who feeds birds asked me
this same question, so I went to the USDA/APHIS website to see if there is any
advice there.
(I have not seen any advice from the Lab of O).

USDA APHIS | 2022 Detections of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza in Wild
Birds

This site shows some Florida birds found dead from the bird flu. N=62. All over
the state.
Black vulture, bald eagle, brown pelican, scaup (ducks).
[New York also has had birds dead from this virus]

Nothing I looked at said to stop bird feeding at feeders.
However, a couple places mentioned keeping feeders cleaned regularly to help
stop spread of any diseases.

Basically cleaning bird feeders is like doing human food dishes in a restaurant:

Wash all debris away with warm, soapy water.
Rinse well.
Immerse in or spray with a bleach solution mixed acc. to directions on bottle.
Water with bleach should be around 75 degrees, not super hot.
Air dry before re-filling with bird seed.

[cayugabirds-l] Eagle & geese

2022-03-01 Thread Donna Lee Scott
A mature Bald Eagle just launched itself from one of my lake-cliff trees &
flushed about 55 C. Geese which were resting on the water below!

The geese flew out to middle of lake & eagle flew south.

[cayugabirds-l] Blackbirds!

2022-02-25 Thread Donna Lee Scott
I have a huge flock of red wing blackbirds with several grackles mixed in
eating under and on all my feeders!
I estimate about 250 Red Wings &
at least 10 grackles.
They keep spooking and flying up to the trees and then back down, so hard to
count.

I have thrown out quarts of cracked corn and sunflower seed on the ground for
them.

[cayugabirds-l] Horned Larks, et al

2022-02-06 Thread Donna Lee Scott
On and around Saxton Road off Indian Field Road north west of Genoa, I enjoyed
seeing at least 65 Horned Larks & 7 Snow Buntings foraging on & in roads by big
Sunnyside Dairy.
Probably after road salt & droppings from large farm trucks that went by.

Then saw roughly 300 European Starlings around big silage storage area.

[cayugabirds-l] 2 ducks, 3 crows

2022-02-02 Thread Donna Lee Scott
It was fun to see 2 Mallards (pair) fly up from lake to join the 3 regular
Crows foraging on cracked corn & sunflower seeds I had scattered on ground near
backyard bird feeders this morning!

Many years ago, one winter, I had almost 100 ducks in backyard for several
days, including an almost all-white Mallard.

I also have them flying over and circling, but rarely see any on the ground

off. One took longer to wake up, took off about 10 minutes after the other 2.
First time I've seen that in the 11 years I've lived here.

I'm on Sheffield Road, Ithaca/Enfield town line.

I’ve had turkey vultures fly over the house many times. But I’ve got a single
one sitting in a tree 200 ft. behind my house. That’s a first, especially at
this time of year. I wonder if there’s something dead way out back. I’ve had
a lot of crows out there too which I don’t normally have. I’m near Auburn.
