[cayugabirds-l] Boblinks May 13

[Jacalyn C. Spoon]

On Monday I noticed that the Bobolinks had returned and were fighting for space 
in my back pasture. Three males were seen all at one time all diving and 
calling. I felt sure that there were more but they were so busy it was hard to 
figure it out.

[cayugabirds-l] Red-winged blackbird singing

I heard my first Red-winged black birds singing on Sunday. They may have been 
singing earlier in the week but I was still in hibernation mode. There were at 
least 3 in my backyard in West Groton. Also, I had a swarm of little bugs 
drowned in a water bucket I left on the sidewalk overnight.

Subject: [cayugabirds-l] Even more Turkey Vultures

The vortex of TURKEY VULTUREs was centered again on the stand of pines just 
east of Asbury Cemetery. At around 330pm (Sun), I walked the dog and just stood 
below marveling at the grace of these birds. I figured the size of the group 
today was so much bigger that it was hopeless to count them, but after watching 
them whirl and swirl in large and small eddies, at one point the whole group 
seemed to take on a distinct direction. So using a convenient straight maple in 
front of me as a 'meter', I was able to tally them as they crossed this visual 
line. Before they started circling back and messing up my count, I had 52.

This was naked eye, so i came back out with binocs but try as I might, I could 
not make any of them into a Black Vulture.

on Working Agricultural Lands
Regulatory Predictability Will Help New York Farmers Improve Wildlife Habitat

Syracuse, N. Y., September 27, 2012- Natural Resources Conservation Service 
(NRCS) Chief Dave White and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) Director Dan 
Ashe announced an agreement that will provide long-term regulatory 
predictability for up to 30 years to New York State farmers and forest 
landowners participating in the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Working Lands 
for Wildlife (WLFW) Initiative. Participants voluntarily implement proven 
conservation practices designed to protect wildlife habitat for Golden Winged 
Warbler, New England Cottontail and Bog Turtle on private lands in critical 
habitat areas within New York State.

"This agreement provides New York State landowners with a way to keep working 
lands in production while complying with the Endangered Species Act (ESA)," 
said Donald J. Pettit, New York State Conservationist. "NRCS and FWS have come 
together to give landowners the predictability needed to manage their farms for 
both production and wildlife benefits."

The agreement builds on a $33 million investment NRCS announced last spring 
dedicated toward producers who develop and implement conservation plans to 
manage and restore high-priority habitats for seven specific wildlife species 
across the country. The species are greater sage-grouse, New England 
cottontail, bog turtle, golden-winged warbler, gopher tortoise, lesser 
prairie-chicken and the Southwestern willow flycatcher. NRCS, FWS and numerous 
state and local entities are partnering to implement WLFW.

NRCS, FWS and numerous other entities such as NYS Department of Environmental 
Conservation, local Soil and Water Conservation Districts, National Wild Turkey 
Federation, Ducks Unlimited and National Audubon Society are partnering to 
implement WLFW.

With the current WLFW agreement, farmers, ranchers and forest landowners who 
implement and voluntarily agree to maintain the proven conservation practices 
in WLFW will have addressed the related ESA regulatory responsibilities for up 
to 30 years. These landowners will be able to operate their farms and ranches 
as agreed upon, providing economic benefits and species conservation 
simultaneously.

Under the WLFW partnership, federal, state and wildlife experts jointly 
identified at-risk or listed species that would benefit from targeted habitat 
restoration investments on private lands. Using the best available science, 
these wildlife experts prioritized restoration actions on a large regional 
scale to focus assistance most cost effectively.

The federal government will grant farmers, ranchers and forest landowners 
regulatory predictability in return for voluntarily making wildlife habitat 
improvements on their private agricultural and forest lands. Participating 
producers must adhere to the requirements of each conservation practice during 
the term of their contract, which can last from one to 15 years. If landowners 
would like to receive regulatory predictability for up to 30 years, they must 
maintain the conservation practices as outlined in the NRCS and FWS agreement.

I was delighted last night to see a Turkey Vulture circling overhead. I thought 
little of it. This morning I noted that there actually was a dawn chorus! I 
have red-winged black birds and American robins  in my yard. I haven't taken 
the time to look or listen for anything else but was happy to see my familiar 
favorites again.

[cayugabirds-l] hay cutting question

Anyone want to chime in on managing hay and pasture for birds?
I'm also writing this question to NOFA and SARE.

OK, so I've been told don't cut my hay until August and other said July.
June 15th is the accepted date that I was told in my farmer circles.

If I delay cutting my field past mid June I can't expect much of a second 
cutting. It's too hot and the field will not grow well.
It seems that I would eventually end up plowing to get rid of the unwanted 
brush and that wouldn't be good either.
I want to keep the land open grassland as the McMansions pop up around me.

[cayugabirds-l] Woodcock family found

On Wednesday night 7pm while walking my field I scared up a family of woodcocks.
I decided to leave them be for a while but will be looking for them again on 
Sunday evening.
There was definitely a larger one and several smaller ones. 
The smaller ones didn't fly far from the initial site I scared them from, I 
assume their nest site. 

 My hay isn't quite ready to cut yet.

For next year...What is a good date to cut hay if I know I have woodcocks.
Is June 15th still OK?

I also found a Redwing Black Bird nest last night while putting up fence posts.
They were none too happy that I was so near but they are also lucky I didn't 
knock it over.

[cayugabirds-l] Thumping of wings???

Hello Cayuga Birders,

Last night at dusk I heard the distinct thumping of wings. 
It was a regular beat not the crescendo & decrescendo of a Grouse. 
Any ideas?

I have 16 acres of grassland/hay with pines all around and a few neighbors have 
large tracks of oak. 
About 150 acres of hay originally but much is grown up in brush or built upon.

I also observed THAT I eat many words from a sentence when I post. May be I was 
really hungry. Or it is just that my brain does NOT need extra words, it adds 
the required word to make a sentence understandable :-))

Interesting, I observed that it seems suddenly for every Shindagin Hollow has 
become THE place to go to bird :-)

[cayugabirds-l] Montezuma recovery?

On Easter Sunday 4/4 I drove by Montezuma to see the fire that we had noticed 
(all the way from Auburn) was in the swamp. How is the birding there now after 
the fire? Are there noticeable differences from last year and this?

Kid's Corner reading program

Join us at the Adelson Library at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology on 
Thursday September 17 at 4:00 PM when we will read */Oddhopper Opera: A 
Bug's Garden of Verses/* by Kurt Cyrus. A fun and rhyming look at the 
world of beetles, earwigs, and other earth dwellers.

Every Third Thursday at 4:00 P.M. the Adelson Library will host the 
"Kid's Corner" a children's reading program. Often, hands on activities 
follow the reading. Open to persons of all ages, this program and the 
books selected are intended for school age children in grades 
kindergarten - 5th but, I always learn something in the Kid's Corner. I 
hope you will too.
